Every year, Costco celebrates Lunar New Year by offering a special selection of items that align with the holiday’s traditions and festivities which is celebrated by many Asian American communities.
It is interesting to note that according to a recent study, Asian Americans, while comprising about 7% of the U.S. population, make up around 10% to 12% of its shoppers. This makes them nearly twice as likely to shop at Costco than the average consumer.
Asian Americans also tend to have larger household sizes and a cultural preference for bulk buying, which aligns well with Costco’s business model.
Lunar New Year Offerings at Costco Often Include:
- Specialty Foods: Costco typically stocks up on traditional Lunar New Year foods like mooncakes, pineapple cakes, salted egg yolk cookies, and other snacks symbolizing good fortune and prosperity. They might also offer ingredients for traditional dishes like whole fish, oranges, or ingredients for longevity noodles.
- Decorative Items: You can find decorative items like Lunar New Year ornaments, money banks shaped like ingots for wealth, and other traditional symbols of luck and prosperity. These often include sets like the “Five Gods of Wealth” or wealth and fortune water globes.
- Alcohol: Costco has been known to release limited edition spirits for Lunar New Year. For instance, they’ve sold Kirkland Signature Scotch whiskies themed around the zodiac sign of the year (like the Year of the Wood Snake for 2025), packaged in culturally themed boxes with festive designs.
- Gift Baskets: There are often curated gift baskets available, filled with a variety of treats and snacks that can be given as gifts during the holiday. These baskets might include an assortment of cookies, candies, and other festive edibles.
Costco’s approach to Lunar New Year not only caters to the cultural significance of the holiday but also leverages the event to offer unique, themed products that celebrate the arrival of the new lunar year.
