Sichuan Chinese cuisine is known for its bold, complex flavors, most famous for its use of Sichuan peppercorns that cause a uniquely tingly and numb sensation called “málà” when combined with spicy chili peppers.
Joyce Cai, owner of Chuan Fu, tells us that “For someone who’s never tried Sichuan cuisine, I’d say: Be ready for an exciting experience! It’s flavorful, aromatic and full of surprises — but always delicious.”
Recently, Winter Park–based Chuan Fu was featured in the 2025 Michelin Guide, earning the distinction as one of the best Chinese restaurants in Florida.
We spoke with Joyce Cai via email about her journey as an entrepreneur, her reaction to being recognized by the Michelin Guide and upcoming plans for Chuan Fu.
Joyce graduated from the University of Central Florida with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and, after gaining valuable experience in the public sector, decided with her husband to pursue their dream of owning a business. In 2016, they purchased their first restaurant — U & Me Chinese located on Kirkman Road in Orlando — and eventually acquired Chuan Lu Garden on East Colonial Drive and in 2019 transformed a third restaurant into U & Me Revolving Hot Pot, a hot pot–style dining experience. Joyce said, “This journey has allowed me to combine my business education with my passion for entrepreneurship and hospitality.”

How did you feel when you heard Chuan Fu became a Michelin Guide – recommended restaurant?
I was incredibly honored and humbled. It felt surreal at first — Michelin is such a respected name in the culinary world, and to have Chuan Fu recognized was a huge milestone for me and my team. It validated all the hard work, long hours and attention to detail we’ve poured into the restaurant.
More importantly, it meant that authentic Sichuan cuisine was being recognized and appreciated at a higher level. That was especially meaningful to me, because my goal has always been to share the true depth and richness of Chinese food with a broader audience. The recognition gave us a sense of pride and also motivated us to keep pushing forward — to maintain our standards, stay true to our roots, and keep evolving.
What are the most popular dishes right now at Chuan Fu?

What is your goal for Chuan Fu ? Upcoming plans for Chuan Fu and other ventures?
My goal for Chuan Fu is to establish it as the go-to destination for authentic, high-quality Sichuan cuisine in Central Florida. I want to create a dining experience that not only showcases the bold and diverse flavors of Sichuan food but also reflects the warmth and hospitality of Chinese culture. I’m also committed to maintaining high standards in service, ambiance and culinary innovation, so that every guest leaves with a memorable experience.
Long-term, I hope Chuan Fu becomes a trusted name in the community and helps raise the standard and appreciation for regional Chinese dining in the U.S.
We plan to introduce new seasonal dishes, offer curated tasting menus and host cultural dining events that allow guests to explore the depth of Sichuan flavors.
We are also planning to expand our beverage program, pairing traditional Chinese dishes with carefully selected wines, teas and cocktails to enhance the overall experience.
Beyond Chuan Fu, we’re currently renovating Chuan Lu Garden and renaming it to A Gourmet Chinese Cuisine and to bring a fresh, modern update while preserving the soul of its classic menu. We hope to reopen it with a renewed focus on Cantonese and regional Chinese comfort food.
Looking further ahead, we’re exploring the idea of opening a more casual, fast-casual concept that focuses on authentic flavors with quicker service — ideal for busy families and professionals.
No matter the project, our mission remains the same: to bring high-quality, authentic Chinese cuisine to a broader audience and create spaces where people feel welcome, excited and connected through food.
Tell us about Leadership Winter Park. Why is it important to you?
Leadership Winter Park is important to me because it provides a unique opportunity to grow both personally and professionally while becoming more deeply connected to the community I serve. As a business owner and entrepreneur, I believe that strong leadership goes beyond managing day-to-day operations — it means understanding the bigger picture, building relationships and giving back to the community in meaningful ways.
This program allows me to learn from other leaders across different sectors, gain insight into the challenges and opportunities facing Winter Park, and find ways to contribute more effectively. It also gives me a platform to share my own experiences as a small-business owner and immigrant entrepreneur.
For me, Leadership Winter Park isn’t just about learning — it’s about building lasting connections and becoming a more engaged, informed and impactful community member.
