Local Orlando Founded Sus Hi Eatstation Celebrates 13 Years

0

Sus Hi Eatstation, founded right here in Orlando, is celebrating their 13th anniversary on 8/29. Celebrate 13 years with Sus Hi Eatstation – they will be doing a BOGO 50% Bowls deal on August 26-29 with code ‘bday’.

For someone who has never been to Sus Hi before, Sus Hi offers unique items that have been inspired by a mix of traditional sushi concepts and modern fast-casual dining.

The heart of the Sus Hi experience is the ability to build your own sushi rolls, bowls, and burritos. If you’re not in the mood to customize, there are also preset options available, including their most popular choices from the menu, such as Party In My Mouth bowl, Fry Me A River fried burrito, or the signature Sus Hi roll.

“We embrace the ninja theme, which adds an element of fun and playfulness. Customers and staff are referred to as ninjas, and the restaurant is referred to as a Dojo,” says owner Teresa Ly.

How Sus Hi Eatstation Started in 2010

Sus Hi Eatstation started in 2010 with owners Robert and Teresa Ly, who were dating at the time and shared not only a love for food but also a passion for creativity.

Their dream was to open a restaurant, but not just any restaurant; it had to be something completely unique, something the world had never seen before.

Robert and Teresa had a shared love for sushi—this was their first spark of inspiration. But they wanted more than just a sushi place; they wanted an experience, something fun and exciting.

What’s more fun than Ninjas??

They decided to blend the artistry of sushi with the stealthy, playful energy of Ninjas.

And so, Sus Hi Eatstation was born.

For the next year, Robert and Teresa dedicated themselves to mastering the Ninja art of sushi-making.

They honed their skills, feeding their friends and family at sushi parties and local events around their hometown of Orlando, FL.

The big day came on August 29, 2011, when the first Sus Hi Eatstation opened its doors right across the street from the University of Central Florida.

“What started as a way to create a unique food experience has since become so much more! We’ve reinvented sushi, embraced the Ninja spirit, and built a community of loyal Ninjas who have joined us on this incredible journey.”

So, come celebrate 13 years with Sus Hi Eatstation – they will be doing a BOGO 50% Bowls deal on August 26-29 with code ‘bday’.

Most popular items right now at Sus Hi include:

  • Party In My Mouth bowl
  • Lit Bowl
  • Fry Me A River fried burrito
  • Salmon Slayer burrito
  • Sus Hi Roll
  • Torched Dragon roll
  • Krab Rangoons
  • Loaded Rice Tots

Chef Alan Lin’s Journey

Owner and chef Alan Lin’s inspiration behind Akira comes from the owner’s deep-rooted passion for Japanese cuisine. He immigrated from China to the United States decades ago and after a transformative experience dining at his uncle’s Japanese restaurant in 2000, the owner fell in love with the flavors and techniques of Japanese cooking. This led to a 20-year career as a hibachi and sushi chef, honing skills and developing a deep understanding of the cuisine.

The restaurant’s name pays homage to the owner’s uncle, who ran a restaurant also called Akira.

After 20 years, he has worked diligently to perfect the taste for hibachi, while also using traditional Asian ingredients to make the food more flavorful and tasty.

For those who have never had it before, hibachi actually a misnomer for teppanyaki, which is a Japanese cooking style and cooking appliance that refers to cooking food in a large, open bowl or grill over high heat. The word is derived from the Japanese words teppan, which means “metal plate”, and yaki, which means “grilled, fried, or pan-fried”. In the United States and Canada, teppanyaki is often called hibachi, which means “fire bowl”. It’s  often served on a hot steel plate that forms the center of the table, and diners can eat directly from the plate. Chefs cook the food in front of the guests, often wowing them with their knife skills and fiery onion volcanos.

Popular Dishes include:

  • The Hibachi Chef Special – Sirloin steak (3 oz.), chicken (4 oz.), shrimp (4 pieces).
  • Passion Roll – Inside spicy tuna, salmon, yellowtail, caviar, seaweed, avocado outside topped with tuna served with spicy mayo sauce.
  • Superman Roll – Inside tempura shrimp cream cheese top with fried krab and special sauce.
  • Crab Rangoon
  • Steak/Chicken Bento Box

Orlando’s Tien Hung Market transformed to Mills Market – Opens Uni Girl, Banh Mi Boy, and Kai Kai Cantonese BBQ

0

Located at 1110 E Colonial Drive in the space formerly occupied by Tien Hung Market, one of the oldest Vietnamese markets in Orlando, Mills Market is set to become one of the most anticipated major additions to the Mills 50 district.

The multi-phase development, unfolding over the next few years, promises to offer locals, visitors and food enthusiasts plenty to look forward to. Led by restaurateurs Jimmy and Johnny Tung, the project is now poised to announce its next stage of progress.

The second phase of Mills Market launched this summer with the introduction of UniGirl, a casual Japanese shop dedicated to freshmade onigiri along with the revamp of existing Vietnamese cafe and bakery, Bánh Mì Boy. UniGirl is Orlando’s First Onigiri Shop.

UniGirl’s menu and operation will be spearheaded by ZARU’s Chef Partner William Shen. The shop’s namesake is a playful nod to the word onigiri. In naming the concept, Shen, who is a proud dog parent, found inspiration in his pet Shiba Inu named Uni whom he affectionately refers to as “Uni girl.”

“It’s her world. We’re just living in it,” says Chef William.

UniGirl’s menu will consist mainly of made-to-order onigiri, which are Japanese rice balls formed into a triangular shape, and wrapped in seaweed with savory fillings. Traditional offerings include ume shiso (pickled plum), tuna mayo, and mentaiko (spicy cod roe). Guests can also look forward to original creations, such as the Edamame Goma with shiitake mushroom and sesame, and Uni’s Unigiri, which is filled with Hokkaido sea urchin and marinated salmon roe. The small shop, which will also offer Japanese snacks and beverages, is inspired by the konbini, or convenience store, where onigiri is a popular staple. UniGirl will directly neighbor Bánh Mì Boy, which is here to stay.

Recently featured on season 7 of Netflix’s food travel series, Somebody Feed Phil, Bánh Mì Boy has since gained an influx of new patrons, many traveling from across the world due to the show’s popularity. The cafe and bakery will undergo a brand refresh – with plans to introduce dine-in seating, delivery options, and a brand new menu debuting this summer. In keeping with the idea of old generation meets new, Bánh Mì Boy 2.0 aims to stay true to the shop’s roots and evolve to meet modern tastes all while honoring the culture of Mills 50.

“We want to bring fresh experiences to Orlando, and the city, especially Mills 50, happens to be a place where people are very welcoming to new ideas. We’re hoping to attract locals and visitors alike,” says Johnny.

Bánh Mì Boy’s refreshed menu will feature sandwich classics with a Vietnamese spin – think “pho” French dip, Viet-Cajun oyster po boys, and Saigon beer-battered crispy fish with chili jam. Signature items from the original menu, like the Bánh Mì Boy Classic with homemade pate and cold cuts, and the Crispy Pork Belly Bánh Mì, will remain. Vietnamese coffee and fresh-pressed sugar cane juice along with daily prepared grab-n-go snacks like housemade fried tofu, fresh summer rolls, and bánh giò (Vietnamese steamed savory rice cakes) will also stay on the menu. The sandwich shop will also introduce a Breakfast Bánh Mì, and will be open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The new Asian barbecue shop, Kai Kai, featuring traditional Cantonese barbecue and housemade dumplings has also found a home at Mills Market.

The menu and operations at Kai Kai are led by husband-and-wife team, Chef Jerry and Jackie Lau, who bring 35 years of experience in Cantonese cuisine from New York City’s Chinatown. The Laus most recently ran a food truck business, and previously had an outpost at iFresh.

Kai Kai’s offerings will feature traditional dim sum, assorted BBQ rice boxes, and classic Cantonese rice and noodle dishes. Menu highlights include freshmade dumplings, turnip cakes, crispy roast duck, honey BBQ pork char siu, Singapore rice noodles, and Chinese sausage fried rice. A variety of grab-and-go Asian drinks will also be available.

“We are excited to bring Chef Jerry’s famous roast duck and crispy pork to Mills Market to complement Bánh Mì Boy and Unigirl. It’s really coming together, and we’ll be announcing more concepts soon,” says Johnny.

Inspired by the Tungs’ travels to Asia where they discovered unique experiences down every alley, Mills Market promises to preserve the original charm of the old market, but with a touch of the new generation. Anchors like Tien Hung Jewelry will continue to operate while the rest of the space undergoes transformation.

Mills Market is still far from completion. Phase 1 saw the opening of ZARU. Phase 2 of the project includes Kai Kai, UniGirl and Bánh Mì Boy. Phase 3 will introduce a hidden Japanese whisky bar while the fourth and final phase will unveil over 10 new micro eateries and shops.

“Future Mills Market concepts will be teased and tested through pop-up events held throughout the year, and there will be a dedicated space in the market serving as an incubator for local chefs to experiment before going to brick and mortar,” explains Johnny.

“Mills Market is an important legacy project for me because of the market’s impact on Mills 50 for the past 30 years. My wife grew up in this market, and my hope is that our kids will do the same. Each new concept that finds its home here will be very curated and interconnected.”

UniGirl and Bánh Mì Boy will be open daily for dine-in, takeout and delivery. Follow @UniGirlFl and @Banhmiboycafe on Instagram for updates! Kai Kai will be open daily for dine-in, takeout, and delivery. Follow @kaikai.bbq on Instagram for updates and opening announcements!

Small Food Group and Domu’s Sonny Nguyen Reveal New Concepts Coming to Orlando’s East End Market

0

Beginning August 1, 2024, Small Food Group will take over the space previously occupied by Skyebird Juice Bar at East End Market (3201 Corrine Drive), introducing two exciting concepts: Rion’s Ocean Room and Gyukatsu Rose.

Construction and renovations will begin immediately prior to the soft opening of Rion’s Ocean Room in Fall 2024. The grand opening for Gyukatsu Rose is slated for early 2025.

“As discussions about the future of the Skyebird space began, it became clear that we had a unique opportunity to evolve East End Market in a dynamic way,” said Ashley Coggins, Director of Operations for East End Market. “Skyebird was a beloved staple here for 11 years, and while we will miss them, we are excited for this new chapter.”

Chef Sean “Sonny” Nguyen and EDOBOY Chef Tyler Inthavongsa have been engaged in extensive research and recipe development for Rion’s Ocean Room in the East End commissary kitchen. Speculation about Nguyen’s involvement in taking over the Skyebird space has been brewing for weeks.

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity East End Market gave DOMU during our humble beginnings in 2016,” said Chef Sonny. “Bringing my passion projects to the market hall under the Small Food Group banner feels incredibly rewarding. Working with John and Kamrin Rife, along with Ashley Coggins, has been a pleasure, and I appreciate their openness to our ideas to advance Orlando’s food scene.”

Coggins adds, “It’s a full circle moment. Sonny is always maintaining his brand’s edge with new and innovative approaches. We’re thrilled to embark on this new concept [with Sonny], blending our experiences with fresh perspectives to give the community something new to enjoy.”

Rion’s Ocean Room, located closer to Gideon’s Bakehouse, will feature a walk-up seafood counter with distinctive blue-green tiles in a striking fish scale pattern. Offering 8-12 varieties of poke, freshly prepared daily, it will evoke the charm of traditional mom-and-pop poke shops in Hawaii.

“We aim to evoke nostalgia for those who are from or have traveled to Hawaii, while offering a taste of the Hawaiian experience to those who haven’t,” said Sonny.

Customers can choose their poke by the 1/4 pound, 1/2 pound, or full pound, with the option to enjoy it over a bed of rice. Guests can enhance their poke experience with delightful extras such as krab salad, uni, and ocean (wakame) salad.

“We are focusing heavily on sourcing sustainably and responsibly raised fish from around the globe, as well as sourcing regionally,” Sonny added.

Gyukatsu Rose will be located on the opposite side, closer to Lineage Coffee Roasting. This sleek bar, adorned with black herringbone tiles, will host 10 guests at a time, offering a unique dining experience centered around Japanese Gyukatsu—a delectable flash-fried breaded beef cutlet served with a hot stone grill.

Each serving will be complemented by traditional accompaniments, including shredded cabbage, koshihikari rice, and dashi soup, along with an assortment of dipping sauces such as house soy sauce, horseradish onion sauce, and fresh wasabi.

“Gyukatsu Rose is being developed alongside Rion’s Ocean Room and will launch once we have operations running smoothly for the poke program,” Sonny clarifies.

Interview with Nora Jain, Tabla Cuisine – New Franchising Opportunities

0

The Indian food industry is booming in the United States, United Kingdom, and around the world. Indian eateries are not only the most numerous in the market, but they are also expanding rapidly.

The popularity of Indian food has increased in these few years. Based on these statistics, it is safe to say that the future of this sector of the food industry is very promising.

That’s why Tabla Indian Restaurants presents a first-time franchise opportunity across the United States, inviting entrepreneurs to bring authentic Indian cuisine to their communities with the support of their established brand and proven business model.

Founders Anshu and Nora Jain both have tremendous experience in the business world, and are successful franchisees themselves for various Marriott, Hilton, IHG and Choice Products.

Anshu Jain started in consulting after graduating from Fisher College of Business at Ohio State University in 1998. Anshu has been learning, innovating, and leading for over 25 years. As a co-founder of Stealth Management Group, Anshu owns and manages multiple hotels and businesses all over the country.

Envisioning a nationwide presence for Tabla, Nora began working with franchise development companies and regulators in 2023 to register as a nationwide franchisor.

We spoke with Nora Jain, Co-Founder & COO, about their plans for franchising Tabla.

Tell us about how Tabla first started – what was the vision then and what is the vision now?

In 2008, Anshu and I embarked on a culinary adventure by opening Tabla, a single restaurant in our hometown dedicated to authentic Indian cuisine. What began as a local gem with a vibrant ballroom for community celebrations has now blossomed into a vision much larger than we first imagined. Fueled by our passion and drive, we are now steering Tabla towards becoming a national franchise, expanding our mission from serving our city to serving the nation. Every day brings us closer to turning our dream of sharing Tabla’s flavors across the United States into reality.

Today, Tabla stands poised to be the catalyst that propels the revolution of Indian food across America. Our vision is to not only spread the rich flavors of India but also provide a profitable enterprise for our franchisees where they can maximize their return on investment. This evolution from a single location to a pioneering franchise embodies our journey from then to now—a testament to the power of vision and the spirit of entrepreneurship.

Tell us about the decisions for starting franchising?  What are the opportunities for potential investors?

The decision to start franchising Tabla was influenced by the brand’s recognition as a premium restaurant in Central Florida, combined with the opportunities available in new markets. This expansion allows potential franchisees to choose between two models: Full Service Fine Dining and Fast Casual with a limited menu, catering to different market needs and investment levels.

For potential investors, Tabla presents several appealing opportunities. Franchisees can expect to drive higher sales and provide more jobs compared to non-franchise establishments, translating into potential higher wages and advancement opportunities for employees. Tabla supports its franchisees extensively, offering two to three weeks of initial training, head chef training for fine dining franchises, and ongoing on-site support to ensure a smooth operation. Financially, the investment starts from $185,000 for a café and $324,000 for a fine dining setup, with initial franchise fees set at $36,000 for Fast Casual and $45,000 for Fine Dining.

For more detailed information, you can visit Tabla’s franchise website or directly contact them for a comprehensive Franchise Disclosure Document and other specifics related to starting a franchise. www.tablafranchise.com

For those who have never been before, tell us why Tabla is special to you and to guests?

Tabla stands out as a special dining destination for several reasons, drawing from its reputation and the feedback from guests:

  • Authentic Fusion Cuisine: Tabla is renowned for its unique blend of Indian, Thai, and Chinese cuisines, offering an authentic yet innovative fusion that excites the palate. This distinctive culinary approach sets Tabla apart, making it a favorite for those who enjoy exploring different flavors and dishes.
  • Quality and Freshness: Guests consistently praise Tabla for the quality and freshness of its ingredients. The restaurant is committed to using high-quality, fresh ingredients in every dish, ensuring a delightful and healthy dining experience.
  • Ambiance and Decor: Tabla’s ambiance is carefully curated to provide a welcoming and elegant dining environment, enhancing the overall experience with its stylish decor and thoughtful layout. This attention to detail ensures that each visit is both comfortable and memorable.

Overall, Tabla’s commitment to excellence in cuisine, service, and atmosphere makes it a cherished spot for both new visitors and regular patrons.

Do you have any franchises starting soon or in the works that you can talk about?

Yes, we are experiencing significant interest with about 10-15 serious potential franchisees currently reviewing the Franchise Disclosure Document or completing the confidential questionnaire. Having launched just two weeks ago, the overwhelmingly positive response and the support from the community have been truly heartening.

How can people learn more about franchising with Tabla?

People interested in franchising with Tabla can learn more by visiting the Tabla franchise website, where they can access detailed information about the process. The site provides resources such as the Franchise Disclosure Document, and potential franchisees can fill out a confidential questionnaire to start the process. Additionally, the website offers contact details for direct communication and support from the Tabla team, ensuring that interested parties receive all the necessary guidance and information.

Inside Look – Nile Ethiopian in Orlando – Summer 2024

Have you ever had Ethiopian food in Orlando before? Nile Ethiopian Restaurant is a long-time celebrated local Orlando restaurant specializing in Ethiopian food – they are located on International Drive in Orlando, Florida.

It was founded in 2006 by Abeba Gonetse and her husband and has since been known for serving a variety of authentic Ethiopian dishes with signature house spices.

When Abeba first moved here from Washington, D.C. she noticed the lack of Ethiopian options available and wanted to bring the taste and hospitality of Ethiopian cuisine to central Florida. Almost 20 years later, they’re still going strong.

The restaurant offers a range of dishes from beef, lamb, poultry, and also caters to vegetarian and vegan preferences. In fact, some of my most favorite dishes at Nile are the vegetarian ones!

Ethiopian food is known for its distinctive use of spices and the communal dining experience. Meals are often served on a large platter with injera, a sourdough flatbread made from teff flour, which diners use to scoop up various spicy stews (wat) and other dishes. Ethiopian cuisine is also characterized by its vegan-friendly options, especially during fasting seasons prescribed by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church.

Popular dishes at Nile Ethiopian Restaurant include:

– Taste of Nile: A combination of Shiro, Kik Alicha, Miser Wat, Gomen, Tikel Gomen, Azifa, Tomato Fitfit, and Fosolia (Green beans and carrots).

– Injera: A sourdough flatbread that is a staple in Ethiopian cuisine and used to scoop up stews and other dishes. It comes with most of the dishes.

– Ethiopian coffee: did you know Ethiopia is considered the birthplace of coffee? It’s where the coffea arabica plant originates. If you have never experienced the traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony, make sure you do so at Nile ASAP!
– Tej – Honey wine: Made in-house – this is delicious.+

Sampler Starter – Sambusa, Azifa and Tomato Fitfit.  Tomato Fitfit – Diced tomatoes, red onions, jalapeno peppers, olive oil, and fresh lemon juice mixed with pieces of Injera. Served cold. Azifa – Mixture of lentils, finely chopped red onions, jalapeno peppers, olive oil, lemon juice and Ethiopian mustard. Served cold. Sambusa – Deep fried pastries stuffed with lentils, finely chopped red onions and jalapeño peppers

Nile House Salad – Romaine lettuce, tomatoes, red onions and jalapeno peppers tossed with Nile house dressing

Simply Capri – New Italian at Flaming Crossing by Walt Disney World in Orlando

Founded by Nick Valenti, the long-time CEO of Patina Restaurant Group and Restaurant Associates, the new Italian restaurant Simply Capri has recently opened, with goals to bring the charm, cuisine, and spirit of southern Italy and the Amalfi Coast to FLAMING CROSSING by Walt Disney World here in Orlando.

Mr. Nick Valenti has had an impressive decades-long relationship with Disney by which he developed and operated twelve successful restaurants at the Walt Disney World Resort and Disneyland Resort.

His newest endeavor with his company Simple Hospitality is Simply Capri, which features wood-fired pizza, house-made pastas, dishes from the Amalfi Coast, a Negroni bar featuring Italian based cocktails, an outdoor Spritz bar that will offer refreshing summer drinks, and warm hospitality to create an upscale yet casual dining experience.

We recently were invited to try out their restaurant and it was a wonderful experience, very similar to what we had in Italy during our trip last year to Rome and Naples. The pizza was very delicious and you could tell they used high quality ingredients. A great feature at this restaurant being so close to Disney World is their kid-friendly pre-fixe menu and fantastic service. I definitely recommend bringing the whole family to try Simply Capri out soon!

Some highlights for Simply Capri:

  • The Executive Chef is Giovanni Aletto, who was born and raised in Naples, Italy. Aletto was previously Executive Chef in the Italy pavilion at EPCOT and owned his own restaurant in the Marche region of Italy.
  • The General Manager is Benito Sevarin, formerly the Head of Operations in the Italy Pavilion at EPCOT. He was also Director of Operations for 18 years with the famed Le Cirque in New York, Las Vegas and Mexico City.
  • The restaurant was designed by award-winning Italian architects Stefano Nardini and Raffaella Melucci. All the artwork and murals come from Italian artists.
  • The interior of the restaurant features imported Italian fixtures which include hand painted tiles that form stunning murals, dining tables, chairs, hand blown glassware turned into nine-foot long lighting fixtures, hand painted pottery, and an Acunto pizza oven.
  • Simply Capri imports Italian ingredients which will include Caputo flour, San Marzano tomatoes, cheeses, and a wine list featuring over 100 labels with many exclusive Italian wines.
  • The restaurant will unveil a cultural exchange program that has brought representatives from Italy to be servers, chefs, and bartenders, allowing them to share their proud heritage with guests.
  • Simply Capri customers will be impressed with its fresh fish offerings that will feature local and imported fish from around the country.
  • Capri is famous for their women’s sandals… and he has a light fixture at the entrance made from 50 sandals from Capri.
  • Mr. Valenti had an Acunto pizza oven from Naples brought in to capture the taste of Neapolitan pizzas… like he did at Via Napoli in EPCOT.
  • And if you like hidden Mickeys… Nick Valenti did his own version and has hidden the names of his grandchildren in his murals.

Simply Capri is located at 114 Ruby Red Place in Winter Garden, and is open seven days a week serving lunch from noon-3:30pm, and dinner from 4-10:30pm, with late night bites on Thursday through Sunday from 10pm-midnight. For more information on reservations, please visit www.simplycapri.com.

Inside Simply Capri:

Mr. Valenti is considered an innovator in the restaurant industry, praised for creating groundbreaking new restaurant concepts and long-time CEO of Patina Restaurant. As Chairman Emeritus at the Culinary Institute of America, Valenti was awarded the International Foodservice Manufacturers Association’s (IFMA) Silver Plate Award, the industry’s premier accolade, for his achievements as an independent restaurateur. He was awarded the prestigious TY Award by the New York State Restaurant Association and inducted into the James Beard Foundation’s Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America. 2024 Summer Wine Recommendations from WineDOs

0
WineDOs is an online site that gives wine drinkers information about any wine around the world with the option of purchasing the beverage through an online retail store. We spoke with CEO Ivan Del Barco about recommendations for wines this summer as well as recent trends – Read on below!
Ricky Ly, Tasty Chomps: What are some great wines to enjoy for the summer and why?

Ivan Del Barco, CEO of WineDos –  Some great wines to try this time of year, would be some that match the hot and strong climate that we’re currently in. Our “special June offer box” represents strong characteristic wines. Here is what we have about those wine on the website:

“June is here and we have selected 4 strong wines to pair with the month: 3 reds and an oak-fermented sparkling Cava! This is a great occasion to try the two most characteristic black grapes from Spain and Chile, Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon. In the case of Tempranillo, we have an aged Rioja from centenary vines to compare with a muscular Tempranillo from the hot and powerful denomination of origin Toro.

In the case of the Cabernet Sauvignon, this is the top of the line of a famous winery in the Colchagua Valley of Chile run by the famous French wine family Lurton. The oak-fermented sparkling Cava comes from one of the most celebrated producers in the Penedés, Augusti Torrello Mata, know known as Celler Kripta.”

The link for this is here:
https://winedos.com/wines/special-offer-box-june/

What are you most excited about in the wine world this year?

The most exciting thing coming up in the wine world is of course the harvest happening in August/September/October (depending on where you are).

Although, we are currently visiting Argentina wine producing areas, where harvesting has already happened, since it is now their winter months. This is quite interesting considering how different grapes have to adapt to different climates/regions.

Where do you go for great wine and food in Orlando? what do you recommend?

Where I go for great wine in Orlando? Apart from the WineDOs website, obviously… I like to bring my friends to The Parkview in Winter Park, a bar/restaurant that is very understanding in their wine selection. They have a cellar and a very big wine shelf.

These wines come from all around the world, with a great understanding of the terroir, viticulture, vineyards, and winemakers that produce the wines.

For those who have never tried WineDOs before, how would you describe it to them?

For those that have never tried WineDOs before- I believe it is our mission to find the most unique and great quality wines in the world. We believe a wine that is unique is a wine that is made while having the terroir, climate, and region in mind while production is occurring. Letting the region, grape, and vine speak for itself is something that can not be found anywhere else. This also does not mean the wine has to be expensive. We have wines of all price ranges on our website.

The wines on our website are all hand selected by our academic director WSET level 4 certified Enrique del Barco. Take a look for yourself at www.winedos.com, where you’ll find videos and documentaries of each wine we provide. In these videos, you’ll find the winemakers/owners of each winery explaining each wine, and the history behind their region and winery. A truly exceptional experience.

This is something that no one else is doing!

How can people sign up for WineDOs
For WineDOs, there’s no need to sign up! Every video and documentary is free to watch on our website! This is something we strive on, and what makes WineDOs a perfect fit for whomever cares about wine. Although, we have special clubs that may be of interest for some people. You can find these clubs on our main page or at https://winedos.com/wineclubs/ These clubs will allow you to subscribe to our “one wine a week” club, and “special reserve club”, where you will receive wines of our selection every X amount of days, weeks, or quarters!
What is your favorite place in the world to visit for wine right now and why?
This is a very hard question, as there are many places I would visit if someone were to buy me a plane ticket and tell me my flight leaves tomorrow! Although right now, I would 100% pick to visit Arlanza. Arlanza is an up and coming wine region in Spain, where families have owned cellars for generations.
There are some very interesting wine producers that keep the traditional wine-making practices that their ancestors would use, to produce their wines today. My personal favorite winemaker in the region, is Andres Septien, a “garagist”, making wine in his garage. Very low quantity, but very high quality. Some of his wines are already available on our website! Just make sure to search up “Septien” on our search bar.

Inside Look: The Aardvark in Orlando’s SoDo plus Happy Hour Specials

0

Have you heard about the Aardvark – the SoDo District neighborhood convenience store that turned into a true neighborhood Florida gulf coastal-inspired gastropub with some of the finest seafood and burgers in Orlando? Visit our instagram for a special giveaway contest for dinner for two at The Aardvark.

Aardvark Beverage’s story goes back over 30+ years, starting as a local convenience store. In early 2020, new ownership changed to a full service restaurant – a true gastropub.

With the new ownership under Emmie Olivecrona, came new inspiration and a new menu with everything made in-house and sourced locally as much as possible – They source their brioche bread from Douce France Bakery in Winter Garden and fly in their po boy bread from New Orleans twice a week.

The Meatballs at The Aardvark

The Aardvark also offers a selection of sparkling, champagne , white, & red wine with hand selections from around the world. Beer lovers rejoice – there is also a rotating lineup of 22 beers on tap, many regionally sourced, and over 200 different beers offered in bottles or cans to enjoy in the restaurant or to take home.

Emmie Olivecrona tells us that the Aardvark is special because of the nostalgia of the neighborhood convenience store turned into a Coastal Inspired Restaurant with full service dining.

“It’s definitely not what you expect when you walk inside. The amount of fresh seafood we have I think really surprises people when they see our menu. We make all our sauces & pickles in house and have some of the freshest seafood around. We have a rotating selection of seafood for our Fish Monger’s Special & Anchors Aweigh Sandwich.”

“Our Butcher’s Blade Special rotates with different farmhouse meats weekly as well. Most importantly, people would not expect the Wine Selection we have such as Groth, Shafer, Orin Swift, & Louis M. Martini. It is not something you think you would find in an old convenience store in SoDo. We come out with a seasonal menu with the changing of the seasons, well, what “seasons” we have in Florida.”

For those brunch lovers, there is also a fantastic Brunch – Saturday, Sunday & Monday -10 am – 4 pm featuring $15 Unlimited Mimosas per Entree and frozen drinks.

They also have a happy hour menu happening Mondays through Fridays from 2pm-6pm including $5 wines, $5 Hacker-Pschorr, $1 off drafts, and a selection of Lucky $7 bites including The Kraut, Slaw Dawg, Southern Comfort Hot Dogs, Smokestack fries with smoked pork, and House fermented fresno honey crispy brussel sprouts.

A Foodie’s Guide to Curry Ford West Main Street District for 2024

Have you been to Orlando’s Curry Ford West District yet? It runs along Curry Ford Road from west of Bumby Avenue east to Gaston Foster Rd. It’s home to not only Michelin Guide award winning restaurants, but also some of the best tamales, tacos, and pizza in all of Orlando. We chatted with Executive Director Stephanie Ziglar via e-mail about what makes Curry Ford West District special and also what’s all happening in the district this year.

What is the history behind Curry Ford West neighborhood? Some classic establishments in the past?

Curry Ford West is just a name recently given to the area that roughly starts at Gaston Foster and goes west to almost Fern Creek. The name was established in 2018 by the group of business owners and residents who organized the then Market Street District. The “drag” or Curry Ford is bordered by multiple established neighborhoods, including Dover Shores, Agnes Heights, Lake Como, and Bel Aire. I recently asked in multiple social media groups and pages what people called the area prior to CFW. There was no consensus. The area was sometimes lumped into the Conway area. What is consistent in their answers was that this area played an important role as a location for stores, gas stations, restaurants, and retail shops. Fun fact, most of the section Of Curry Ford Rd that is included in our district was once Conway Rd until Conway was extended north towards Lake Underhill Rd. This was the main thoroughfare to get downtown. When you ask longtime residents about some classic establishments in the past the list is long, but some of the most mentioned include: Dinos Pizza, Polar Cup, The Conway Twin movie theater, The DMV, Gabriels Subs, Players Bar, South Seas, and A&P. I’ll add Looney Birds (Now Graffiti Junction) and SnoBiz (Now Twistee Treat) to the mix.

Where did the name Curry Ford come from?

So, the claim is the Curry Family came to east Orlando and settled as ranchers there. The Econlockhatchee River crossed their land, and for travelers to get across they would have to “ford” the river. Curry Ford. As I mentioned above the portion of Curry Ford in this area was once Conway Rd, until the late 60’s.

What makes Curry Ford West special in your opinion?

There are a million answers I could give. But if I had to pick one it would be the strong sense of community that we have. So many of our business owners are also residents and, in many instances, lifelong residents. At our recent Future of the Ford Event, almost a quarter of our attendees both live and work here in the district. It’s not out of the norm to walk into Roque Pub and run into the owners of Revive Health and Fitness. Or to have the owner of The Commission show up in full costume with his whole family to our Trunk or Treat event. Our community consistently supports each other and the surrounding organizations, like the schools and youth sports organizations. It gives us a tight-knit feel that I am extremely proud of.

What are some popular things to do and eat in the district?

So many people don’t know but we have a very popular set of pickleball courts located at Dover Shores Community Center. The parking lot is often packed with pickleball participants, say that 3 times fast. But people love to visit our restaurants and bars. The Commission and Claddagh Cottage have some outstanding live music and artists performing weekly. Hourglass Brewing’s patio is the go-to during this wonderful weather. If food is your thing, we have some greats. You want Italian, F&D or Pizza Bruno’s. Taco’s, Tamale’s, or Guac are what you’re craving? Tamale Co, La Fiesta, Cilantros Taqueria, and Black Rooster, all have you covered. High-end amazing dishes? Papa Llama is your place. We have the new Thai Spoon, Smokemade Meats, Crispy Cones, and Mecatos opening soon as well. The list is endless, and we have something for everyone.

What are some new things happening this year in the Curry Ford West District?

It’s a big year for us. Our design committee just finished the light pole banner project and is rolling right into a large mural project for one of our plazas, all while sitting on the committee for the mural for the new station 11 Firehouse. They also just recently released our Curry Ford West sticker pack.

Our org and promo committees are working hard on great events for the entire community. May 4th is the return of our Little Entrepreneur Fair with a new indoor location at Dover Shores Community Center. We will be sporting jorts and dad shoes in June (6/22) at our Dress Like a Dad Pub Crawl and No Halloween is complete without the CFW Trunk or Treat. We, unfortunately, had to retire many of our Picture-Perfect Sets last year as they were at the end of their life. So, we introduced our Sleigh the Ford event where Santa spent the day at Curry Ford West businesses. This year we are expanding on that event (12/7) and adding a community and business-involved holiday art installation, we are currently calling it Curry Ford West Tree Fest, but we are open to suggestions!

Our economic vitality committee has an entire Business Knowledge Exchange Series starting in April. Let’s Blossom Safely-Topics: Safety, Code Enforcement, Permits-Monday, April 22. Sunshine Propaganda-Topics: Marketing, Branding and Communications-Monday, July 22. Fall Back into Smart Operations-Topics: Taxes, Accounting Business Plan-Monday, October 21. This series will be held at Dover Shores Community Center. They are also hosting several unplugged networking socials, open to residents and businesses, dates TBA.

Thank you and congratulations William Henao (@historicdowntownsanford) for donating to the Tasty Chomps x World Central Kitchen fundraiser and winning my silent auction experience: Lunch with me on Park Avenue!

Together, we raised over $11.5k for Chef Jose Andres’ World Central Kitchen, a non-profit organization that goes to the frontlines and provides emergency food relief during natural disasters and humanitarian crises.
