New Chinese Handpulled Noodles in Orlando – Walala Asian Noodle House in Chinatown

0

I am a huge fan of Chinese Lanzhou handpulled noodles or lamian after having first tried it in NYC’s Chinatown. They’re lighter and tastier from the stretching and pulling method that the noodles go through.

It is said that Lanzhou noodles, were “the first noodles of China” wit a heritage of over 1400 years from the Tang Dynasty period of China.

At Walala Asian Noodle House, you can watch the noodle masters in action, twisting and stretching the noodles to make their delicious dishes.

They also have an unlimited noodles option when you order your noodle soup. There’s also some fantastic hand made dumplings here as well.

Try them out soon!

New Turkish Coffee in Downtown Orlando – Mariam Coffee

0

Did you know there is a new Turkish coffee shop now open in downtown Orlando?

They have an interesting option for making coffee – Turkish sand coffee – which is a traditional brewing method that involves cooking coffee in a narrow-necked pot called a cezve in a pan of hot sand over an open flame. The sand creates even heat, causing the coffee to foam and the grounds to settle to the bottom, resulting in a thick, strong cup of coffee, and can be flavored with cardamom.

Check them out soon!

Four Flamingos with Chef de Cuisine Shelby Farrell

0

Shelby Farrell has served as Chef de Cuisine at Four Flamingos since the restaurant’s opening in 2022. Together with Chef Blais, she leads development and evolution of the menu.

Chef Shelby proudly brings American South and Italian influences to the flavor profile of Four Flamingos. She grew up in the Florida Panhandle, with her family hailing from the Mississippi Coast and Naples, Italy. A passion for the culinary arts began when she was a child and her Neapolitan Nona brought her into the kitchen, before she could even reach the counter.

A graduate of Valencia Culinary School, Shelby began her Hyatt career over a decade ago as an entry level cook, rising to several Chef roles and previously serving as Chef of Hemispheres Restaurant at Hyatt Regency Orlando International Airport. She has been featured on PBS’ Moveable Feast and the Food Network’s Guy’s Grocery Games.  Follow her @chefshelbyfarrell.

We spoke with Chef Shelby Farrell recently about her philosophy as well as what’s new at Four Flamingos!

Tell us about your philosophy on sustainability. Why is it important?

My personal philosophy is to focused on waste reduction, whether that be something large scale like using regionally sourced products to reduce fuel waste from transportation, or small scale through making our own lard as a byproduct of braising oxtail to reduce food waste.

What is Four Flamingos doing with local produce and sourcing of ingredients that is special? Tell us about some of the products, farms, and dishes?

We’ve recently phased out our greens, herbs, and flowers from primarily California based farms to The Villages Grown, a choice that sustains our community through local commerce and sustains our environment by reducing waste through lost product and waste fuel of transport. They are growing us this incredibly fragrant Lemon Balm that is the core ingredient for the pesto on our Gemelli alle Vongole, fresh pasta with clams. Another local farm we have been proud to partner with is Shogun Farms near Tampa, they capture invade wild boar around the state then farm rase them to them be used in restaurants across Florida, we make our Boar ISliders from the Shogun boar, one of my favorite small plates on our menu.

What are some of the new favorite dishes and what is special about them?

Our Bruleed Goat Cheese salad is having my favorite iteration yet, we’re getting some gorgeous farm fresh peaches in from south Georgia and partnering them with a salad made from this gorgeous variegated Nasturtium from Villages, it’s the perfect summer salad. Our New Orleans style Shrimp and Grits is also out of this world, the most luxurious rice grits from Congaree & Penn in Jacksonville with fresh shrimp and a this zippy  NOLA Barbecue that brings the whole plate to life, it’s a classic dish from growing up on the Gulf Coast but refined just enough to be uniquely ours.

Anything else you want to share?

Nothing of note come to mind! Keep an eye out for the Stone Crab Brunch this fall

SECOND HARVEST CALLS ON CENTRAL FLORIDA TO HELP END HUNGER

Hunger Action Month Initiative in September Aims to Feed Hope Across Seven Counties

Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida (SHFBCF) is calling on its neighbors across the seven-county service area to help feed hope and end hunger.

In September, which is Hunger Action Month, Second Harvest is encouraging one million actions – such as donating, advocating or volunteering – to raise awareness for the one in eight adults and one in six children experiencing hunger on any given day in Central Florida.

The community can get involved in a variety of ways:

“We continue to see more families finding themselves in a place they never imagined – needing help with food,” said Derrick Chubbs, President and CEO at SHFBCF. “Hunger Action Month is a reminder that it will take all of us to ensure that our friends and neighbors have the nutritious food they need to learn, work and thrive. Your support is more important than ever as we work to provide hope and sustenance to those who need it most.”

For more information about how to support Second Harvest and hunger relief efforts, visit www.FeedHopeNow.org.

Inside Look: Shiki -Sai, A New Japanese Sushi and Izakaya Restaurant at Epcot’s Japan Pavilion

0

Last year, Shiki-Sai opened at the Japan Pavilion at EPCOT’s World Showcase featuring Japanese sushi and izakaya (gastropub) experience.

The restaurant is located on the second floor at the Japan Pavilion (formerly the Tokyo Dining restaurant), above the Mitsukoshi Department Store. If you time your meal right, you could view fireworks from the World Showcase!

For an authentic izakaya experience, select from a variety of mouthwatering izakaya-style delicacies, including savory skewers, crispy tempura, succulent sushi rolls and hearty okonomiyaki.

The restaurant is inspired by the spirit of Japan’s vibrant seasonal festivals.
Ji Hwan Lee is the Chef de Cuisine for Shiki-Sai. With an illustrious career spanning top-tier establishments worldwide, including Four Seasons Resort Lanai’s Nobu, Hyatt Regency Kyoto’s Touzan, and Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki, Chef Lee Chef Ji Hwan Lee is an experienced master of authentic Japanese cuisines.

A Seoul, South Korea native who is a former hockey player and fluent in three languages (English, Japanese, and Korean), Chef Lee’s first culinary experience was helping his mother in her Japanese restaurant in Seoul.

With a rich history of crafting items from sushi to sukiyaki, Chef Lee brings a wealth of knowledge, ability, and training in Japanese cuisine.

We spoke with Chef Lee about the menu at Shiki – Sai – read on for more!

Interview with Shiki -Sai Sushi and Izakaya Restaurant’s Chef Ji Hwan Lee

What should guests expect when they think of Shiki-Sai?

Expect a unique and convivial dining experience that is quintessentially Japanese. At Shiki-Sai, just as in Izakayas in Japan, guests enjoy a wide selection of drinks and foods while spending time with their loved ones.

Expect a lively and convivial atmosphere, with lots of chatter and laughter. Expect to celebrate the seasons, an important aspect of Japanese culture, and to learn and maybe try something new.

For those who have never had Japanese cuisine before, how would you describe it to them?

Enjoy a quintessential Japanese dining experience featuring fresh seafood served on seasoned rice (sushi). Sushi newbies can enjoy cooked varieties such as tamago (fried egg) and unagi (freshwater eel), or raw tuna. In addition to sushi, we offer a variety of small, shareable dishes called Izakaya Classics. These include Japanese versions of familiar dishes like fried chicken and grilled salmon, and more adventurous dishes like wagyu tataki (thinly sliced pieces of high-quality wagyu beef, lightly seared and served rare). The setting is cozy, and you can pair your meal with sake or green tea, making it a unique and tasty introduction to Japanese food.

What are some of the sources for seafood and product for the restaurant?
Most of the seafood we use for sushi and sashimi comes directly from the Toyosu fish market in Tokyo, Japan. And, of course, the Wagyu is also sourced from Japan. Some of the other fish, beef and produce are sourced locally.

Most popular dishes so far?

The wagyu gyoza, temaki sushi set, and beef yaki udon are the most popular food dishes, and the violet yuzu lemonade (mocktail) and Summer’s End (cocktail) the most popular drinks.

What are the inspirations behind the menu?

For many of our guests, Shiki-Sai is their first introduction to Japanese food, so we wanted our menu to be a tribute to the many culinary traditions of Japan, blending authenticity with innovation. We’ve taken great care to craft a menu that pays homage to classic Japanese dishes while adding our unique twist to create a memorable dining experience.  Our drinks menu, featuring Japanese sake, shochu, craft beers, and cocktails, is carefully curated to complement our dishes perfectly.

Tell us about the changing (3) seasons that guests can expect at Shiki-Sai – when are these expected to occur?

Although the mural and monitor images depict 3 seasons, we will be celebrating all 4 seasons. The entrance decor will change (expect maple trees in autumn and kadomatsu, traditional Japanese decorations made for the New Year, in winter). The cultural experience will also change. During the summer, we celebrated the festival of tanabata by inviting our guests to write wishes. In the autumn, we will invite them to celebrate tsukimi (moon viewing) by writing haiku reflecting the season.

How often will the menu change?

Every season we will feature a number of season-limited items, such as moon dumplings in autumn, but the core menu will stay the same.

Striking Success: Interview with Primrose Lane’s Chef Jason Campbell

0

From the Community Paper September 2024 edition

Orlando’s Chef Jason Campbell has been working in some of Central Florida’s best kitchens over the years – most notably bringing to Orlando the notorious house-made bowling alley hot dog. By the way – if you haven’t tried the hot dog or smash burger at Primrose Lanes yet, they’re a must! We spoke with Chef Campbell via e-mail to get more insight about his culinary inspiration and also find out about his new project in Thornton Park.

Tell us about your background – how did you get inspired to become a chef?

I’m actually born and raised in Orlando, I can say one of my earliest memories in cooking was helping my mom and grandfather make potato pancakes,I got to press the button to shred the potatoes in the food processor lol. cooking And family gatherings were big in my family so food was always there and I was always in the kitchen trying to learn something and help wherever I could, my mom always had cooking shows on when I was a kid and I loved watching and learning.

A few years after high school I went to culinary school and never looked back, I worked through some kitchens in town but I really cut my teeth at The Ravenous Pig and grew there from a fry cook to sous chef, and helped open the original Cask and Larder as a sous chef and then Chef De Cuisine when i left in late 2014. my wife and I traveled to Cincinnati where I worked with the 21c hotel group where i was Chef De Cuisine and then got my opportunity to be the Executive Chef for the property in Oklahoma City in 2016 to 2019 when I got the opportunity to come back home to be the Executive Chef at Luke’s kitchen and had a wonderful and amazing time there until I joined the team at TMG!

How is everything at Primrose Lanes as executive chef?  What are some changes that have occurred and what is coming up for the restaurant?

Everything at Primrose has been great, we just hit our one year anniversary! Very proud of what we have done and proud of our team, with growing comes changes so we did a few menu changes throughout the year. I’ve learned that a venue will tell you what it needs and most of the most important rolls of a chef is adaptability, we loved our seafood program but it just didn’t catch on so we made the flex to remove it and replace it with some heavy hitters.

What are some of the most popular dishes right now at Primrose Lanes?

Some of the most popular dishes at the lanes are the smash burger, the infamous hot dog, the alley platter it’s great for sharing with groups, the hand breaded motz sticks!

Tell us about the new upcoming concept June in Thornton Park – what is the inspiration behind it? What can guests expect when they come? Any dishes that will be on the menu?

We’re super excited for the June concept! We will be focusing on the Yucatan region of Mexico, the foundation will be Mexican roots with subtle yet exciting Asian influences. You can expect bold yet vibrant flavors with elements of smoke, texture, freshness and quality, lots of sharable items and some larger format plates for the table. You will see fresh crudos and ceviche, grilled meats, seafood and focus on vegetables and a lighter and healthier approaches as this region is known for. We will highlight culture, techniques and traditions with our twist to create a laid back environment and relaxed vibes to enjoy tasty food and cocktails with friends and family.

What are some of your favorite meals around town right now?

Oh man, some of my favorite meals in town, gotta be King Cajun, and I love anything hot pot and grill your own meats related, it’s like a “choose your own adventure”! Bakery 1908 is a great spot as well, gotta get my wing fix at Devaney’s Sports pub by UCF-get the devil’s backbone sauce on the side, can’t beat Doughboyz Pizza, John and John’s, and Black Magic Pizza right now. We also enjoy shopping at D’Amico and Sons in Oviedo -great sandwiches, bakery and Italian goodies, and of course Stasios! Just so many great things going on in our town!

Any other upcoming plans you can tell us about?

With TMG we are always growing and looking to provide fun and exciting things for our community! Soon you will see our Eastwood Concept taking shape that will bring tasty goods to mill/50

Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant will host the 12th annual Great Irish Hooley roots revival music festival beginning Friday, Aug. 30 and continuing through Monday, Sept. 2. Top Irish, Canadian and American bands will rock Raglan Road’s indoor and outdoor stages with traditional favorite jigs and ballads, Celt grass, folk mainstays, and pop tunes. There is no cover charge. On stage throughout the weekend-long Hooley party:

Bandits on the Run – These Brooklyn-based indie-folk-pop-Americana headliners—Adrian Enscoe, Sydney Shepherd, and Regina Strayhorn– are known for their genre-defying sound that’s received accolades from NPR’s All Songs Considered, American Songwriter, NPR Weekend Edition and the Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project. The trio has been busy producing EPs, composing music for TV and film, and touring the globe from the Cambridge Folk Festival to Milwaukee Summerfest.

Cassie and Maggie – Two sisters from Nova Scotia light up the stage with traditional and contemporary Celtic instrumentals and vocals.  Irish Music Magazine says the talented sisters “are among the top musical acts in demand on the Irish/American/Canadian scene.”

The Byrne Brothers – Extraordinary father-and-sons quartet from Donegal, Ireland, are back by demand, telling stories through their music, singing and Irish dancing.

The Connemara Ramblers – Sam Carey and Orla Leavy delight audiences with their fresh Irish sounds.

Men of Aran – Colin Farrell (fiddle and whistles) and Dave Curley (banjo and vocals) are legends in the Irish trad music world.

Northern Crossing – Three-piece trad Irish ensemble from Glasgow, Downpatrick, and Belfast produce a vibrant live show of music and song.

Raglan Road Irish Dancers – The pub’s award-winning Irish dancers kick up their heels and defy gravity before your eyes.

To pair with the Irish vibes and in keeping with the Hooley spirit, Raglan Road will debut new dishes, beers, and whiskeys. In addition to its All-Day Menu, the restaurant will serve its weekend Rollicking Raglan Brunch Saturday through Monday, Labor Day.

When you hear the Gaelic word “hooley,” you know you’re in for plenty of fun at a lively, family-friendly party. The Great Irish Hooley begins Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. Celtic face painting is complimentary from Friday evening through Labor Day. And on Sunday and Monday, Raglan Road’s Irish Dance Troupe will invite guests to join them in a lively ceili step dance. Ceilis, dating back to the Celts and Druids who inhabited Ireland in the 1500s, are usually a main event of local celebrations in Irish and Celtic communities.

“At Raglan Road, our Hooley is all about finding a reason to party!” says general manager Rachael Conroy. “Labor Day weekend is the perfect time to celebrate the last vibes of summer during a festival of unique Irish music, dance, and food.”

A consistent TripAdvisor Hall of Fame honoree and multi-award-winning restaurant, Raglan Road is widely known for its beer-battered fish and chips, Shepherd’s pie with a contemporary twist, and frequently refreshed menu of first-rate pub cuisine. Local Orlando Founded Sus Hi Eatstation Celebrates 13 Years

0

Sus Hi Eatstation, founded right here in Orlando, is celebrating their 13th anniversary on 8/29. Celebrate 13 years with Sus Hi Eatstation – they will be doing a BOGO 50% Bowls deal on August 26-29 with code ‘bday’.

For someone who has never been to Sus Hi before, Sus Hi offers unique items that have been inspired by a mix of traditional sushi concepts and modern fast-casual dining.

The heart of the Sus Hi experience is the ability to build your own sushi rolls, bowls, and burritos. If you’re not in the mood to customize, there are also preset options available, including their most popular choices from the menu, such as Party In My Mouth bowl, Fry Me A River fried burrito, or the signature Sus Hi roll.

“We embrace the ninja theme, which adds an element of fun and playfulness. Customers and staff are referred to as ninjas, and the restaurant is referred to as a Dojo,” says owner Teresa Ly.

How Sus Hi Eatstation Started in 2010

Sus Hi Eatstation started in 2010 with owners Robert and Teresa Ly, who were dating at the time and shared not only a love for food but also a passion for creativity.

Their dream was to open a restaurant, but not just any restaurant; it had to be something completely unique, something the world had never seen before.

Robert and Teresa had a shared love for sushi—this was their first spark of inspiration. But they wanted more than just a sushi place; they wanted an experience, something fun and exciting.

What’s more fun than Ninjas??

They decided to blend the artistry of sushi with the stealthy, playful energy of Ninjas.

And so, Sus Hi Eatstation was born.

For the next year, Robert and Teresa dedicated themselves to mastering the Ninja art of sushi-making.

They honed their skills, feeding their friends and family at sushi parties and local events around their hometown of Orlando, FL.

The big day came on August 29, 2011, when the first Sus Hi Eatstation opened its doors right across the street from the University of Central Florida.

“What started as a way to create a unique food experience has since become so much more! We’ve reinvented sushi, embraced the Ninja spirit, and built a community of loyal Ninjas who have joined us on this incredible journey.”

So, come celebrate 13 years with Sus Hi Eatstation – they will be doing a BOGO 50% Bowls deal on August 26-29 with code ‘bday’.

Most popular items right now at Sus Hi include:

  • Party In My Mouth bowl
  • Lit Bowl
  • Fry Me A River fried burrito
  • Salmon Slayer burrito
  • Sus Hi Roll
  • Torched Dragon roll
  • Krab Rangoons

The restaurant’s name pays homage to the owner’s uncle, who ran a restaurant also called Akira.

After 20 years, he has worked diligently to perfect the taste for hibachi, while also using traditional Asian ingredients to make the food more flavorful and tasty.

For those who have never had it before, hibachi actually a misnomer for teppanyaki, which is a Japanese cooking style and cooking appliance that refers to cooking food in a large, open bowl or grill over high heat. The word is derived from the Japanese words teppan, which means “metal plate”, and yaki, which means “grilled, fried, or pan-fried”. In the United States and Canada, teppanyaki is often called hibachi, which means “fire bowl”. It’s  often served on a hot steel plate that forms the center of the table, and diners can eat directly from the plate. Chefs cook the food in front of the guests, often wowing them with their knife skills and fiery onion volcanos.
