This event supports Flagler College Hospitality & Tourism Management students, fostering education and promoting historical destination tourism. With each sip, note, and bite, the festival invites you to be part of our city’s ongoing, rich Spanish heritage. The event is funded in part by the St. Johns County Tourist Development Council.

0

Orlando! Have you tried this new All you can eat Korean bbq and tofu stew restaurant?

This place is called So Gong Dong and they’re located in the same plaza as Lotte Market off of John Young Pkwy – they’re known for Korean BBQ and their korean stews known as soon dubu (soft tofu stew). It’s a home style Korean restaurant, which is actually a chain and named after the Sogong-dong area of Seoul, which has cultural significance as it was once home to Princess Kyoung-Jung, the second daughter of King Tae Jong of the Joseon Dynasty (1400s).

Korean BBQ is a popular style of cooking where diners grill their own meat, typically beef, pork, or chicken, right at the table on built-in grills, enjoying it with a variety of side dishes (banchan) like kimchi, pickled veggies, and ssam (lettuce wraps). The meat is often either marinated (bulgogi or kalbi style) or served plain with sauces and seasonings on the side.

Korean soups like kimchi jjigae (kimchi stew) or doenjang jjigae (fermented soybean paste stew) are also popular here . Bring a friend or two because eating together is what Korean food is about!

The all you can eat menu starts at $29.99 and comes with tons of sides and appetizers- for $10 more you can get a few more specialty cuts.

January 2025: New Additions to The MICHELIN Guide Florida including 4 in Orlando

0

Today the MICHELIN Guide announced 10 new additions to their Florida list. These are “recommendations” while the official list of stars and awards will come later this year. Orlando / Winter Park is recognized with 4 new additions to the list and Miami with 6. This does not mean there won’t be others recognized later this year when the awards come out so stay tuned. Read on below to learn who made the list!

Get the scoop on the ten newest additions to the Florida selection here!

Here’s What The Michelin Guide Had To Say:

Orlando

Coro
Cuisine: Contemporary

Chef Tim Lovero has fashioned a singular take on the neighborhood gem at this contemporary spot in Audubon Park. Step inside and feel instantly at home, thanks in part to a warm, first bite from the kitchen delivered moments after arrival. It’s just the beginning of an enjoyable meal crafted from their ever-changing, shared plates-style menu. Warm potato naan is served with whipped chicken skin butter and marmalade; impossibly tender lamb shoulder is even better with butternut squash purée and sautéed greens; but dessert is the scene stealer, taking the classic fries and a milkshake combination and turning it on its head with panna cotta, crispy sunchoke, cocoa nibs, and diced French fries.

Sorekara
Cuisine: Japanese

In a world of uniformity, Sorekara proudly forges its own path. This Baldwin Park restaurant is unlike anywhere else you’ve been, offering a surprising and delightful culinary journey that revels in turning expectations on their head. Chef/owner William Shen’s tasting menu highlights Japan’s 72 micro seasons with highly original dishes infused with a sense of whimsy (note the course designed to mimic a 7-Eleven snack run or the “nigiri”). Whether it’s madai sporting a distinctive riff on tradition or a deeply savory bowl of kegani sourced from Hokkaido, there is an elegance and refinement threaded throughout the meal, which progresses through multiple rooms across several hours. Another hint that this is far from typical? Sorekara is open for one seating, only a few nights a week.

Micah Cox / Sorekara

Micah Cox / Sorekara

UniGirl
Cuisine: Japanese

Set within the Mills Market, this casual concept from Chef/owner William Shen (and named for his pup, Uni) draws a line before it’s even open. It’s no wonder, as everyone is here clamoring for a taste of their onigiri, on offer until they sell out. The menu is a moving target, with ever-changing availability alongside a host of daily specials like a Japanese curry hash brown (if you’re lucky). Made and served in sealed bags, the classic triangles are best eaten immediately while the filling and rice are still warm. It’s all spot-on, whether filled with a crispy fried chicken thigh or tuna enlivened with mustard. Unagi is a fan favorite, with cubes of barbecued freshwater eel enhanced with a sweet sauce complemented by the well-seasoned rice.

Winter Park

Ômo by Jônt
Cuisine: Contemporary

Chef Ryan Ratino’s lauded D.C. restaurant, Jônt, is more than just the inspiration for this offshoot. This Winter Park restaurant echoes that spirit and sensibility (think classic French techniques married with pristine Japanese ingredients), albeit with a few Florida touches. The larger space allows for discrete moments at each meal, while three tasting menus run the gamut from tightly edited and more affordable to loaded with luxury ingredients. No matter the selection, expect refined dishes punctuated by the seasons, as in chawanmushi with an autumnal twist of braised sweet potato, kombu, and brown butter sauce. Scallop prepared two ways demonstrates the kitchen’s deft hand while chocolate and hazelnut kakigori is an elegant tribute.

Lunar New Year 2025: The Year of the Snake at Costco in Orlando

0

Every year, Costco celebrates Lunar New Year by offering a special selection of items that align with the holiday’s traditions and festivities which is celebrated by many Asian American communities.

It is interesting to note that according to a recent study, Asian Americans, while comprising about 7% of the U.S. population, make up around 10% to 12% of its shoppers. This makes them nearly twice as likely to shop at Costco than the average consumer.

Asian Americans also tend to have larger household sizes and a cultural preference for bulk buying, which aligns well with Costco’s business model.

Lunar New Year Offerings at Costco Often Include:

  • Specialty Foods: Costco typically stocks up on traditional Lunar New Year foods like mooncakes, pineapple cakes, salted egg yolk cookies, and other snacks symbolizing good fortune and prosperity. They might also offer ingredients for traditional dishes like whole fish, oranges, or ingredients for longevity noodles.
  • Decorative Items: You can find decorative items like Lunar New Year ornaments, money banks shaped like ingots for wealth, and other traditional symbols of luck and prosperity. These often include sets like the “Five Gods of Wealth” or wealth and fortune water globes.
  • Alcohol: Costco has been known to release limited edition spirits for Lunar New Year. For instance, they’ve sold Kirkland Signature Scotch whiskies themed around the zodiac sign of the year (like the Year of the Wood Snake for 2025), packaged in culturally themed boxes with festive designs.
  • Gift Baskets: There are often curated gift baskets available, filled with a variety of treats and snacks that can be given as gifts during the holiday. These baskets might include an assortment of cookies, candies, and other festive edibles.

Costco’s approach to Lunar New Year not only caters to the cultural significance of the holiday but also leverages the event to offer unique, themed products that celebrate the arrival of the new lunar year.

We recently visited the University Blvd Costco location – here are some of what we found for celebrating Lunar New Year:

NEW: Gyukatsu Rose Soft Opens in Orlando January 16-19th at East End Market

0

Chef Sonny Nguyen (Domu, Tori Tori, Edoboy)’s Small Food Group recently took over the space previously occupied by Skyebird Juice Bar at East End Market (3201 Corrine Drive).

They are introducing two exciting concepts to Orlando: Rion’s Ocean Room and Gyukatsu Rose.

Gyukatsu Rose, located right next door to Rion’s Ocean Room, is a sleek bar, adorned with black herringbone tiles, and will host 10 guests at a time, offering a unique dining experience centered around Japanese Gyukatsu—a delectable flash-fried breaded beef cutlet served with a hot stone grill.

Each serving is complemented by traditional accompaniments, including shredded cabbage, koshihikari rice, and dashi soup, along with an assortment of dipping sauces such as house soy sauce, horseradish onion sauce, and fresh wasabi.

In addition to the wagyu beef cutlet meal, they also serve a selection of delectable sake and desserts like the matcha pudding.

Soft Opening starts this week Thursday, January 16 to Sunday, January 19:

  • Service will be first come, first serve. No reservations. They will be using the same line set-up as Rion’s Ocean Room. If space is full inside, the line will extend into the courtyard.
  • The soft opening hours will be 4:00pm till 9:00pm or sold out.
  • The single wagyu cutlet set is $29 and they will be offering a double portion of wagyu for $48.
  • They will continue to be open Thursday – Sunday, 4:00pm – 9:00pm or sold out.

Grand Opening will be sometime in mid- to late February.

Your feedback and comments are greatly appreciated, please email gyukatsurose@gmail.com

Here is a sneak peak inside:

“As discussions about the future of the Skyebird space began, it became clear that we had a unique opportunity to evolve East End Market in a dynamic way,” said Ashley Coggins, Director of Operations for East End Market. “Skyebird was a beloved staple here for 11 years, and while we will miss them, we are excited for this new chapter.”

“I am extremely grateful for the opportunity East End Market gave DOMU during our humble beginnings in 2016,” said Chef Sonny. “Bringing my passion projects to the market hall under the Small Food Group banner feels incredibly rewarding. Working with John and Kamrin Rife, along with Ashley Coggins, has been a pleasure, and I appreciate their openness to our ideas to advance Orlando’s food scene.”

Rion’s Ocean Room, located closer to Gideon’s Bakehouse, features a walk-up seafood counter with distinctive blue-green tiles in a striking fish scale pattern. Offering 8-12 varieties of poke, freshly prepared daily, it seeks to evoke the charm of traditional mom-and-pop poke shops in Hawaii.

The restaurants are named after Chef Sonny and his wife Christine’s Daughters: Rion and Rose.

Top Omakase Restaurants To Try in Orlando for 2025

0

“Omakase” is a Japanese term that translates to “I’ll leave it up to you” or “chef’s choice.” In the context of dining, particularly with sushi or kaiseki (a traditional multi-course Japanese dinner), omakase refers to a meal where the chef decides the menu for the customer. Orlando is now home to more and more omakase style restaurants with many achieving national recognition.

An omakase meal involves the chef preparing and serving a sequence of dishes based on what is freshest and in season. The chef often presents each piece directly to the diner, explaining the fish or ingredient used, the preparation method, and sometimes even the sourcing of the ingredients.

Omakase meals can be quite pricey due to the high-quality ingredients and the personalized service, but prices can vary widely. Omakase has gained popularity and acclaim, not just in Japan, allowing diners outside of Japan to experience this unique dining format. Indeed, many of the Michelin Guide starred restaurants in Orlando are omakase style restaurants.

KFC to Nationally Debut 1st Ever “Saucy” concept in East Orlando

0

KFC is set to unveil a new dining concept named “Saucy” on December 20, 2024, in Orlando, Florida. It will be the first of its kind nationwide.

The location is off of Alafaya Drive near Curry Ford. We were able to take some photos recently to give a sneak peek at the new digs.

This venture is described as a “flavor-forward dining destination” focusing on chicken tenders paired with an assortment of 11 sauces, echoing KFC’s iconic Original Recipe’s 11 herbs and spices.

The sauce lineup includes distinctive flavors like Chimichurri Ranch, Peri Peri Ranch, Jalapeño Pesto Ranch, Smokey Bacon Ranch, Thai Sweet ‘N Spicy, Sweet ‘N Saucy BBQ, Saucy’s Sauce, Spicy Mango Chutney, Saucy Ranch, Creole Honey Mustard, and Sweet Teriyaki.

Christophe Poirier, KFC’s chief new concept officer, emphasized the contemporary trend of sauce obsession, suggesting that “more is more” in the context of enhancing flavor experiences.

Saucy aims to leverage the popularity of chicken tenders, which have seen significant consumer interest, as noted by the success of brands like Raising Cane’s and the demand for McDonald’s Snack Wrap.

Poirier described tenders as one of KFC’s “menu giants,” explaining that Saucy represents a modern twist on KFC’s “Finger Lickin’ Good” by amplifying this beloved product with an extensive sauce selection.

Customers at Saucy can customize their meals by choosing sauces either individually or in flights, with tenders prepared fresh in small batches.

The menu extends beyond tenders to include items like the EZ Crispy Sandwich and Spicy Queso Crunch Sandwich, alongside combos starting at $7.99 for three pieces of tenders with sides.

The concept’s design and operations diverge from typical KFC aesthetics with a distinctive pink color scheme, digital ordering kiosks, and live entertainment, including “Saucy Soirées” on Fridays. This setup not only serves food but aims to be a social hub, addressing the post-COVID shift where younger demographics seek spaces for both function and social interaction.

Behind the scenes, Saucy employs advanced technology for operational efficiency, with data-driven algorithms to keep food hot and fresh while minimizing wait times. The Saucy app further personalizes the customer experience with 20 points of customization.

KFC’s strategy with Saucy involves a slow scale-up, focusing on refining the dining and operational aspects, fully backed by Yum Brands as a 100% equity concept. This approach allows for learning and adapting based on customer and team feedback, aiming for a polished concept that can be expanded further. This move reflects KFC’s commitment to innovation amidst challenging economic conditions, pushing the boundaries of their traditional offerings with a fresh, engaging format.

Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Raises a Record-Breaking $352,218 for Local Charities

0

During a members’ luncheon, Visit Orlando announced a record-breaking donation raising $352,218 to support local charities through Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining, presented by Orlando Health. This marks a 30% increase compared to 2023, surpassing the program’s previous record set in 2020. 150 restaurants participated by offering $40 and $60 pre-fixe menus with $1 and $2 from every meal going directly to local charities.

“This year’s program was our largest to date, with 150 restaurants participating, including 25 new venues and nine MICHELIN Guide honorees—and the results are evident with the donation raised. We are deeply grateful to all diners and restaurant partners whose contributions are transforming lives and helping build a sustainable future in Central Florida.” said Casandra Matej, president and CEO of Visit Orlando.

Since launching the charity fundraising component in 2009, Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining has raised over $2.9 million. This year’s primary beneficiary, The Mustard Seed of Central Florida, is helping families recover from hardship while promoting environmental sustainability. They have repurposed over 160,000 mattresses, diverting nearly 4 million cubic feet of waste from landfills.

Four Outstanding Restaurants Recognized as 2024 Top Performers

  • Summer House on the Lake – Top performing new restaurant: $40 menu
  • Chayote Barrio Kitchen – Top performing new restaurant: $60 menu
  • The Oceanaire Seafood Room – Largest increase in meals served year over year
  • Seasons 52 – Orlando – Top performing restaurant overall

To expand the impact of this year’s donation, Visit Orlando awarded $3,000 to nonprofits in each of Orange County’s six commission districts. These organizations were selected for their creative approaches to fostering thriving and sustainable communities—the theme of this year’s charity efforts.

  • Hope Along the Way – Supporting families through life’s challenges.
  • New Image Youth Center – Empowering youth with educational resources.
  • Next Step Foundation – Promoting recovery and wellness in the community.
  • United Against Poverty – Offering tools to improve lives and livelihoods.
  • WASH Foundation – Advocating for clean water and sustainable practices.
  • CDA “WE Care” – Building strong, compassionate communities.

“We’re truly thankful to our local community and visitors from beyond Orlando for supporting these nonprofits through their participation in Magical Dining. With this record-breaking year, we’re especially excited to continue seeing how this extraordinary program’s impact enhances the health and wellness of our community.” said Erick Hawkins, chief administrative officer at Orlando Health and Visit Orlando board member.

Smart Cookie: An Interview with Steve Lewis, founder of Gideon’s Bakehouse of Disney Springs and Audubon Park

You may have seen these viral, massive, almost-half-pound, chocolate chip-full cookies from gothic Victorian era–themed Gideon’s Bakehouse around town; their original location is inside East End Market in Audubon Park, and their second, at Disney Springs, is almost always sure to have a long line wrapped around the building. We spoke via email with Steve Lewis, owner of Gideon’s Bakehouse, about the evolution of Gideon’s and their upcoming plans.

How did Gideon’s all begin?

Technically, Gideon’s began when I was a little kid dealing with the pressures of little kid life. I learned early on that baking was my stress hobby, and I started working on what is now my chocolate chip cookie recipe when I was a young teenager. The goal was never to open a bakery, and that’s why Gideon’s is so personal. It’s more of a collection of memories and heartache than a traditional business.

How would you describe Gideon’s to someone who has never experienced it before?

I describe Gideon’s more like an art gallery than a bakery. It’s a collection of stories that come in various forms, from cookies to cold brew to trading cards. I also talk about Gideon’s as a community. I value being a small business in the Central Florida food scene, and I love that my little bakery is a place where so many friendships are born. Very rarely do I lead with the desserts. That’s something everyone can discover and (hopefully) enjoy on their own.

Steve Lewis, owner of Gideon’s Bakehouse. (COURTESY OF GIDEON’S BAKEHOUSE)

How have things changed or remained the same since starting out?

Very stubbornly, not much about the hows and whys of Gideon’s has changed. Everything is still made the same now as when I was selling cookies alone from my kitchen. What has changed most is the spotlight, for better or for worse. Having a big crew is wonderful because it allows for an explosion of creativity, and we make the most of that. But the spotlight also gives a public impression that we’re a big company, and I prefer feeling like a little local secret.

What about being in Orlando makes it a special place for your company?

Orlando is the home of my recipes. I worked things out in a little rented shack in College Park. At the time, there wasn’t a solid scene in Central Florida for local business. Gideon’s had a chance to pop up at the East End Market just as things started to blow up, and I got to be a small part of what has made our community so very special. I could have easily and quickly crashed and burned, but Orlando lifted me up and opened many doors. That means everything to me.

What are some of the most popular items to get right now? Some hidden gems?

Oh wow! To each their own! Even what I like best changes daily with my mood. However, you’re really missing out if you’re not pairing the Banana Bread Chocolate Chip Cookie with the Peanut Butter Nitro Cold Brew. As for hidden gems, the Hot Cookie Hour at Gideon’s in Disney Springs is intensely dangerous, scooping Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream on top of a Hot Chocolate Chip Cookie. The Candied Walnut Cookie every Wednesday at the OG location in the East End Market is something special. Many people will tell you that the cake slices are the real hidden gem!

What are some upcoming plans for Gideon’s this year?

We’re working on some fun spin-off projects. I don’t want to open up another Gideon’s, but we release characters with our desserts each month, and some of them need to fly and be free in their own little worlds. Everything inside of Gideon’s right now is prep for October! It’s our biggest month of the year when we release a never-before-seen dessert and piece of merch every weekend of the month! It’s a lot of hustle and almost kills us all, but we’re gluttons for punishment and look forward to it!
