Bonefish Grill serves up delicious, healthy Gluten Free menu options

0

Photobucket

Bonefish Grill on Sand Lake Road in the Dr Phillips area recently hosted a media event to spotlight their gluten free menu. A gluten-free diet is a diet free of gluten. According to Wikipedia, Gluten is a protein found in wheat (including kamut and spelt), barley, rye, malts and triticale. A gluten-free diet is the only medically accepted treatment for celiac disease. With over 3 million people in America who are diagnosed with celiac disease, a gluten-free menu is definitely a welcome addition to our restaurants. Also, with carbs from wheat and rye cut out, its also a healthier, lighter option for those who are looking for sensible items.

When customers arrive at Bonefish Grill and want to have the gluten free menu, they notify their “anglers” (or waiters) who proceed to go through the step by step process of ensuring the food preparation and menu is to gluten-free specifications with the store manager involved the entire process. This ensures that there is no contamination involved with any wheat products.

Surprisingly many of the items at Bonefish Grill are actually gluten free already such as their popular and famous gluten-free flourless chocolate macadamia nut brownie. For beer drinkers out there, they even have a sorghum based gluten-free beer called Redbridge which was pretty good. Fish, fruits, veggies, rice, seafood, pretty much everything with out wheat and rye are gluten-free items. Bonefish Grill even has gluten free bread and focaccia made from brown rice with hints of thyme.

Despite the huuuuge crowds, the weather was nice and the food trucks were fun. Next time hopefully the event will have more food trucks and more food so they don’t run out 😉 i know it was frustrating for some people to stand in lines for an hour and then find out the food is gone. everyone was great though c’est la vie

For more info on the trucks at the event tonight, visit

Tibby’s New Orleans Kitchen – Winter Park – Orlando

5
Photobucket

Tibby’s New Orleans Kitchen is the new restaurant on Aloma Avenue receiving rave reviews for their New Orleans style cajun cuisine. Its founders are the same guys that created Tijuana Flats, fellow UCF alumni who started their first restaurant just down the street on University Blvd and Dean Road. They have been quite successful with their Tijuana Flats concept and I am sure they will be successful with their new project Tibby’s New Orleans Kitchen (likely to become a franchise soon too?)

A Look inside Tibby’s New Orleans Kitchen
Photobucket
Tibby’s New Orleans Kitchen in Winter Park, Florida

Located in Winter Park off of Aloma Avenue just east of Lakemont, its tucked inside the Publix plaza next to Aloma Cinema Grill and Mellow Mushroom. On the night that I arrived, they just celebrated their first month since their grand opening and the line was already out the door at 7pm. There was about an hour wait. (I’d recommend trying to make reservations if you are to go). The decor inside is a raucous, vibrant affair with deep purple and light green walls and a eclectic mix of New Orleans paraphernalia decking the walls, creating a festive and fun atmosphere. Our service was attentive and accommodating this evening at Tibby’s with no issues or complaints.

As someone who’s been to New Orleans on a few occasions and having the good fortune to try some real cajun food, I’d have to say that Tibby’s deserves props for trying their best to match the deep flavors of New Orleans. But maybe it was the items that I ordered on this visit that didn’t necessarily match the hype and at times I felt it was missing that cajun spice/flavor in some of their dishes.

For starters, we began with the oysters remoulade ($8), a tangy heap of fried oysters on top of a bed of lettuce and fit inside one of their goblets/chalice cups. It was battered and sweet, a enjoyable enough dish. We also ordered the andouille sausage jambalaya ($4.5 for cup) and seafood gumbo ($5), both of which we thought were a bit small for the price and untypically bland and sparse with meat. The jambalaya and gumbo both could have used some more spices to kick it up a notch. The crawfish pie ($9) was a favorite, served with some of the jambalaya rice, and featuring two meaty crawfish filled empanada pies. The shrimp creole ($11), however, was lacking in flavor; the sauce was reminiscent of a italian/mexican tomato salsa based sauce and the shrimp was hardly the jumbo sized mentioned in menu.

For dessert, we tried the single order of the beignets ($2.25) and some bread pudding ($5).  The beignets were fresh and flaky and definitely a must try if you are at Tibby’s.

Overall, I think Tibby’s is a good introduction to New Orleans cuisine, but alas has a ways to go. They also serve a wide variety of po boy sandwiches which I hope to try on another visit.

Banh Mi Nha Trang – Banh mi sandwiches – Orlando

Photobucket

A few months ago, as part of the epic Orlando Weekly Banh Mi Battle, I got the chance to visit Banh Mi Nha Trang to pick up some new banh mi from their shop for the first time to enter them into the competition. Although they did not win 1st place (the honors went, to the deserving Boston Bakery across the street), Banh Mi Nha Trang which just opened a few days prior placed 2nd for best banh mi in Orlando.

It is a bit hard to find Banh Mi Nha Trang as it is tucked away in a courtyard on Colonial Drive just to the east of the intersection with Mills Avenue. I like to tell people its in the strip between Lollicup (now renamed Chewy Boba Company) and Saigon Market with the big yellow flag on the flag pole. You have to park in the rear and walk through to the courtyard to reach Banh Mi Nha Trang. Its an unassuming hole in the wall of a place to say the least, but its these holes in the wall that most often have the most heart in their food.  The place is a mom and pop type joint, run by a lovable, friendly and always smiling Vietnamese lady. Her English is not good at all yet but you can pretty much order the same banh mi you can as the other banh mi joints. They also sell home made nem chua pickled meat and cha lua pork roll meats.

They specialize in banh mi Nha trang, a banh mi from the south central coastal region of Vietnam and topped with a special garlic fish sauce and peppery goodness. The sandwich is full of various cuts of Vietnamese deli meats like cha lua pork roll, cha siu roast pork, and pickled carrots and daikon veggies. The bread is also different from the other banh mi places as it is a bit softer and more chewy.

The banh mi dac biet Nha Trang is $2.50 (the cheapest price you’ll find for banh mi in Orlando) and if you buy 5 you get 1 free.  Tips: its cash only for the moment so remember to bring some when you go.

Black Bean Deli – A Cuban Cafe – Orlando

 Photobucket

The quirky, teeny tiny Black Bean Deli is a staple of the Winter Park area, sitting in a small strip mall in an even smaller shack just north of Fairbanks Avenue on Orlando Ave (US 17/92). They have won numerous accolades throughout the years from Best Cuban in the Orlando Weekly to Best Takeout in the Orlando Sentinel Foodies just this past year.

The place, as said earlier, is tiny. You would probably be best advised to try to get their goods for take out as they have very few seatings by the window / along the walls. Their menu is similarly tiny, though I think it suits them  as this allows for greater focus to do a few things exceptionally well rather than go crazy on a whole crazy list of dishes.

Photobucket

Black Bean Deli is renown for their cuban sandwiches, and rightly so. I ordered  a small cuban ($5) and it was delicioso: plentiful, juicy slices of sweet ham, roast pork, swiss cheese and pickles all pressed in between a wonderful cuban bread. The bread is what makes these sandwiches stand out I believe as they are fresh, soft, and you can tell they were made with careful attention. Excellente. I could only eat half of it cause it was such a large sandwich. No problems because I saved the rest for lunch the next day.

Photobucket
The small Cuban Sandwich at Black Bean Deli

My partner ordered the pan con lechon ($5), a sandwich chockful of pulled roast pork with garlic mojo. It was good but maybe needed a little seasoning and a little lighter touch of the garlic mojo.

Photobucket
Pan con lechon – literally bread with roast pork

The beef empanadas ($1.75) were  tasty meat pies filled with bits of seasoned ground beef, kind of like a latino hot pocket with ground beef instead of cheese and pepperoni. We also had the tres leches, ($2.25) a small wonderful pound cake topped with three types of milk ( condensed milk, whipped cream, and milk).

Photobucket

Next time I will try their medianoche sandwich too…

ps…I have also heard rumors also that Black Bean Deli may try their hand at the food truck phenomenon as well, so we shall see if these rumors prove to be true in the coming days!

Festival of Chocolate recap! at the Orlando Science Center

2

The Festival of Chocolate took place just this past weekend at the Orlando Science Center. It was a huge event with dozens of chocolatiers and thousands of chocolate lovers in attendance. In addition to all the different chocolate cup cakes, chocolate cake, chocolate cotton candy, chocolate this and that and more, there was also an interesting exhibit about the history of chocolate (via the cacao bean and the spanish conquistadors in Latin America) and the production of chocolate from the cacao bean. I had a great time and thought it was a good fun time for the family, although I wish there was more free chocolate! 🙁

My favorite item from the Festival of Chocolate had to be the red velvet cupcake from The Sugar Suite, a local bakery here in Orlando that does special events like weddings and parties too. I found the red velvet cake to be very rich, moist, and overall scrumptious!

Here are some pictures from the fun:

More and more gourmet type food trucks are hitting the streets and The Crooked Spoon has answered the call. They are currently located at the Chevron gas station on the corner of Fern Creek and Colonial Drive near Bumby Ave during lunch hours and relocate to the Dr Phillips area for late night festivities. The Crooked Spoon is headed by Chef Steve, who has worked at Tavern on the Green in New York City, K Restaurant and Wine Bar and Citrus in Orlando in the past along with Allie, the very sweet pastry /sous chef who also happens to bake the cookies for The Crooked Spoon.

Photobucket
Tools of the Trade at the Crooked Spoon

My friend and I ordered the Crooked Spoon Burger and the Mac N Cheese to share. We also got the potato salad and apple-papaya sauce for sides. The Crooked Spoon Burger ($8) is a meaty Angus beef burger with soft buns made locally from the Olde Hearth Bakery topped with a chipotle aioli sauce, sweet caramelized onions, swiss cheese, lettuce and tomato. It definitely ranks up high as one of the best burgers in Orlando at this point in time.

My favorite however was the Mac N Cheese ($8) from The Crooked Spoon, made with a 6 cheese blend, roasted red and yellow peppers, bacon, and toasted bread crumbs. The decadent serving was enough to fill up two people and luckily I had my friend with me to share this heavenly, cheesy, mac-y delicious creation with, otherwise it would most definitely have ended up all in my tummy. Magnificent.

The other items for lunch at The Crooked Spoon include Fish Tacos, Bistro Ham, Rustic Garden Salad, Mediterranean Chicken Salad, and Cranberry Turkey. They change their menus often so check back (sometimes they have a pork quesadilla on the menu!). Most of the items run around $8 and a combo with a drink and a side for $2 more. I will definitely be back to check out more items from the Crooked Spoon!

Some tips:

They accept both cash and credit. You might want to bring a chair or table with you as there is no seating (i used the trunk of my car to set everything for eating lol)

Beewon Korean Cuisine – Dr Phillips area

Photobucket

Beewon Korean Cuisine is located on Dr Phillips Boulevard just south of Turkey Lake Road in Southwest Orlando. I am a big fan of Korean food as it is often fresh, tasty, and healthy. The only set back about it is that its a bit expensive for the amount of food that you get. Beewon is no exception to this, owing in no small part to its location in the upscale Dr Phillips neighborhood.

Photobucket
Inside Beewon!

Inside Beewon, photos of Korean pro-golfers/patrons, wooded tables, chairs, and traditional Korean decor fill the space. It is definitely larger and more airy than the popular Shin Jung, leaving you plenty of space to breath in case you decide to cook up some bulgogi or kalbi beef ribs at your table.

Photobucket
Fried Mandoo dumplings

We ordered the mandoo fried dumplings, a tasty appetizer that I wish had a bit more filling. The spicy seafood noodle soup is always pleasant, with its familiar spicy and thick seafood broth with shrimp, clams, mussels, and Korean noodles. The kalbi beef short ribs ( a bit steep at $24.95 a plate) is excellent though a bit chewy, marinated in a sweet soy sauce and char grilled.

Overall Beewon is a pretty good Korean establishment to visit if you are out in the west side of town though I do prefer other establishments that are closer. Check it out!

The Capital Grille and Share Our Strength Partner for a Wine to End Childhood Hunger

0

For the second year, The Capital Grille extended a call-to-arms for artists across the country to design a label for their exclusive Artist Series Wine. Beginning March 21, the wine with the winning label will be available at the restaurant for purchase.

Best of all, The Capital Grille will donate $25 from the sale of each limited-edition bottle to Share Our Strength and its mission to end childhood hunger in America.

The Artist Series Wine Event Returns to The Capital Grille

Exclusive, Limited-Production Wine Offered: Sales to Benefit National Charity

(February 8, 2011, New York, NY) – The Capital Grille – nationally renowned fine-dining restaurant known for its dry aged, hand-carved steaks, fresh seafood and award-winning wine list – is proud to announce the return of their annual Artist Series Wine Event: a unique celebration of the worlds of fine art and winemaking, featuring an exclusive, limited allocation wine adorned with an original piece of artwork as its label.

Beginning March 21, The Capital Grille will offer an exquisite Cabernet Sauvignon during their second annual Artist Series Wine Event. The wine will be available exclusively at all 44 locations of The Capital Grille, and the company will donate $25 from the sale of each limited bottle to Share Our Strength® and its mission to end childhood hunger in America.

The Capital Grille Artist Series Cabernet was hand-crafted by Thomas Peffer, a world-class winemaker from Atalon Vineyards in Napa Valley, with the help of The Capital Grille’s George Miliotes, one of only 170 Master Sommeliers in the world. The grapes used were from specially selected vineyards in Napa Valley whose high elevation and unique microclimate result in the perfect conditions for creamy, boldly textured flavors. Blended solely for The Capital Grille, fewer than 1,000 cases of this unique wine will be produced.

“We are committed to providing a distinctive, accessible and personal wine experience,” said Miliotes. “We created The Capital Grille Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon to give our guests an incomparable opportunity to experience a magnificent vintage with ripe fruit flavors, prominent tannin and the complexity and balance expected of a fine Cabernet.”

To match the work of art inside the bottle, The Capital Grille invited artists, label enthusiasts and wine lovers to create an original label for the wine during a competition held last autumn. The winning painting, Pairings, by Florida-based artist Patricia Timbrook, was chosen for the way the bold colors and fluid lines perfectly complement the robust flavors and subtle undertones of the wine, and will appear on every individually numbered bottle of The Capital Grille Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon.

“In addition to supporting our national charity, Share Our Strength®, we are proud to recognize and celebrate talented artists like Patricia Timbrook,” said John Martin, President of The Capital Grille. “As always, we look forward to bringing our guests an exceptional and unique wine and dining experience. We’re especially pleased when those experiences help support a worthy cause.”

The Capital Grille Artist Series Cabernet Sauvignon will complement The Capital Grille’s award-winning wine program, which is routinely recognized by Wine Spectator magazine. Featuring more than 325 Old and New World selections housed in floor-to-ceiling, temperature-controlled wine kiosks, The Capital Grille also offers a Captain’s List of 125 collector wines. Additionally, guests have the opportunity to lease a wine locker, personalized with an inscribed brass nameplate.

Saigon Flavors – Oviedo, FL

1
Photobucket

Saigon Flavors opened not almost a year ago and has already won Best Vietnamese in the Critic’s choice in this year’s Orlando Sentinel Foodies Awards. That is quite the accomplishment for the “new kid on the block”, and indeed quite the achievement being located so far from the Mills-50 district area where the majority of Vietnamese restaurants are clustered.

Photobucket
Goi cuon / summer rolls with shrimp and pork

Saigon Flavors is located in Oviedo, Florida right off of Aloma Avenue and SR-417 just east of Tuscawilla Road. Although the restaurant is new, the owner Charlie Tang has a long history in the Vietnamese restaurant business, having previously owned Viet Garden on Colonial Drive near Mills Avenue in the “Viet Town” area. He is very much active in Saigon Flavors, manning the front desk and checking up on guests quite regularly during meals.

I enjoyed Saigon Flavors on quite a few occasions and though the flavors are a bit toned down from what I am accustomed to, I do understand as the clientele is a bit more “American” and have differing tastes. I’ll take what I can get out here I suppose.

Photobucket
Bun thit nuong cha gio / Rice Vermicelli Noodle bowl with spring rolls and grilled pork

My favorite item on the menu are their goi cuon / summer roll appetizers ($3.50) filled with shrimp, pork, vermicelli rice noodles, and herbs wrapped in rice paper and served with a hoisin/peanut butter dipping sauce. The bun thit nuong cha gio (rice vermicelli noodles with grilled pork and egg roll) are also fantastic. I did notice however that the cha gio / fried egg roll had much more vegetable filling than I am accustomed to in a Vietnamese egg roll which I did not like. It was tasty though even without alot of meat. The quintessential Vietnamese dish “Pho”, beef noodle soup, is decent here as well, although it did seem to need a tad bit more flavor. Maybe the soup needed to simmer for a little longer.

Photobucket
Pho noodle soup!

The service here is decent, much more accommodating than the usual brusque attention that you would get downtown. The decor here is a bit of a fusion of modern and traditional Vietnamese, with tall wooded pillars, colorful walls, and some murals of temples and Vietnamese markets.

Photobucket

Overall, Saigon Flavors definitely was not a disappointment and is a welcome addition to the growing offerings in the Oviedo area. I hope it will achieve continued success, but also hope that it can continue to stick to the traditional Vietnamese cuisine and keep bringing the “saigon flavors”.

Note: Saigon Flavors is closed Mondays.

Stonewood Grill and Tavern – Dr Phillips area – Orlando, FL

Stonewood Grill and Tavern, the upscale American restaurant establishment founded in Ormond Beach, FL, recently underwent some changes including the recruitment of a new CEO, former Ruth’s Chris Steak House President and Chief Operating Officer Geoffrey D.K. Stiles (Here is an interview from the Orlando Sentinel with CEO Stiles by Sandra Pedicini).

Some of the new changes to Stonewood Grill include:

New Menu
Recently, Stonewood Grill unveiled a new menu based on months of studying guests’ eating habits. The newly streamlined menu includes tried-and-true customer favorites and fresh additions, such as the new ribeye steak and a dessert called Florida Orange Cake.

New Bar Menu
Always trying to evolve in response to feedback, Stonewood Grill and Tavern is preparing to launch a new menu for its bar so bar guests can access lighter fare when gathering after work for drinks.

Wine Enhancements
Another exciting offering at Stonewood Grill is its two-for-one happy hour pricing on wine. Its diverse wine selection includes 27 brands available by the glass and 58 brands available by the bottle.

They have three locations in the Orlando area including Dr Phillips, Heathrow/Lake Mary, and Winter Springs.

For starters, I would recommend an order of the blue cheese chips, homemade potato chips drizzled with blue cheese aioli, lightly baked and served with blue cheese crumbles and topped off with a balsamic reduction. A delicious appetizer that was finished to the last bite. The buffalo shrimp, drizzled with buffalo sauce and blue cheese crumbles, were also delightful and fresh to taste.

One of the big changes at Stonewood Grill is the addition of the new 12 oz. Oak Grilled Ribeye steak, a tender, flavorful, juicy cut of steak grilled using oak wood chips. It was skillfully done, cooked to perfection. I did wish my spinach and rice pilaf sides had a bit more flavor; though I am sure they are working on that. The herb encrusted grouper, part of the seafood selection at Stonewood Grill,  was thick and meaty with a texture reminiscent of crabmeat, very tasty and luscious.

For dessert, we ordered the signature chocolate bread pudding, made in house at Stonewood grill topped with Haagen Daz ice cream. More like a hybrid of chocolate cake and bread pudding, it was sweet, comforting and moist to the taste.

Overall, my visit to Stonewood Grill was truly a delight thanks to the professional staff and awesome preparations by the chef. I will definitely try to come back especially for the happy hour specials and also to hopefully try their famous burgers one day.

Korean BBQ Taco Box in Orlando

Photobucket

Photobucket

Today I had the chance to drop by the Korean BBQ Taco Box for lunch. They just opened up yesterday (shout out to Big Bad Voodoo Lou from Chowhound for the find!) and I was dying to try their goods. I was delighted to find that they have a pretty long list of about 10 items or so available at their food truck.

Photobucket

Located at the northeast corner of Primrose and Colonial Drive right across from Total Wine, the bright yellow RV truck with the sign “Grand Open” and “Korean BBQ Taco Box” was hard to miss. I actually met a friend Chris R. from Yelp here by chance. I ordered their Spicy Pork Taco Box for $5.99, a great deal considering it comes with the taco, a spicy korean Chicken wing, two dumplings, two beef sushi roll fried, and these two rice/beef balls as well as a side salad with dressing. I buy a drink from the nearby Citgo to support them too as they are the landlords for the korean bbq taco truck. They will be stationed there for the time being with no plans of mobile service according to the owners, who recently migrated to Orlando from Virginia.

The spicy pork taco came out quite delicious, spicy with that Korean red paste kick and lovely in the soft tortilla with lettuce and onions. A delightful lunch along with the awesome sides. It would be nice if they start serving mini tacos so we can mix and match or maybe a combo taco box with three different tacos (yes I know i’m just being greedy)

Some things to note:
– Ask for Kimchi ~ its not given automatically
– Cash only! Most of the items range from $5.99 to $6.99 so its pretty affordable
– Parking is easy at the Citgo as there are lots
– There is a table for two
– Buy your drinks at Citgo
– Give them a call about hours, not sure what time they close

Overall, I think this place is going to be a favorite especially among for those late-night drunken cravings. It is definitely a welcome addition to the foodie scene and is great “street food”.

First Look – The Spicy Pork Taco Box from the Korean BBQ Taco Box truck in Orlando

1

Here is a first look at the Korean BBQ Taco Box truck sent in from reader Norbert L! As you can see, for only $5.99 you can get a side salad, two pieces of fried roll (made with rice and bulgogi beef), two dumplings, a spicy chicken wing, two pieces of beef rice roll, and a taco stuffed with lettuce, onions, korean spicy pork. Delicious…

Korean BBQ Taco Truck has arrived in Orlando

Orlando finally has a Korean BBQ Taco Truck by the name of Korean BBQ Taco Box, a bright yellow bus filled with delicious korean bbq dishes. It is located in the Citgo gas station area near Primrose and Colonial drive. Check out this awesome report from Big Bad Voodoo Lou on Chowhound.com http://chowhound.chow.com/topics/763144

Orlando Amway Center – Concessions!

0
Photobucket

The Amway Center opened its doors last fall in downtown Orlando as the new home of the Orlando Magic and venue for concerts, performances, and more. The Amway Center is a project that is decades in the making, costing around $380 million with state of the art audio visual displays and the most “technological” arena in the NBA. My first time to the Amway Center to watch a Orlando Magic basketball game was awe-inspiring: beautiful architecture, grand seating, wonderful sound, overall a great experience.

Photobucket

In addition to Jernigan’s restaurant, a full service restaurant on the club level of the Amway Center, there are dozens of concession stands throughout the building. These concessions feature foods ranging from the standard hamburgers and hot dogs, to Puerto Rican, Seafood, BBQ, and more. Most of the concessions are staffed by volunteers who work for non-profit organizations in the community who fundraise for their causes through their work at the Amway Center. Levy Restaurants, which started as a deli years ago and expanded to sports arenas nationwide, runs the concessions for the Amway Center, giving great choices for those coming to enjoy the game or a concert.

The items are known to change depending on availability of the products in the season and also by the demands.

Photobucket

One of my favorite items is the Crab cake sandwich available at the Seafood grill on the Club Level. This Crabcake monstrosity is chock full of crab and stuffing goodness, tender and tasty to the bite. Definitely not your every day concessions food items and definitely among the best I’ve tried.

Photobucket
Photobucket

At the O-Town Grill station on the Terrace Level, the Magic Burger is another favorite made with fresh burger beef, bacon strips, cheese and topped with a pretzel bun. I originally thought that this would be a dry, flavorless burger that I had become accustomed to at sports arenas but this burger was juicy and flavorful. A very delicious burger, and the soft pretzel bun is a nice unexpected touch.

Photobucket
Photobucket

Another favorite item is the chicken tequila lime nachos available at the Big Blue Tacos station on the main Terrace level. These are better than the nachos that you get at Ale House or other pubs: their nachos are fresh and crispy and their tequila lime marinated chicken is delectable.

Overall, I was very happy with the concessions food. Typically these foods are not known to be the best, but the above three are a sure fire hit if you are ever at the Amway Center.

Lechenora Latina 2 – East Orlando

2

Photobucket

Lechonera is a term used to describe restaurants that serve “lechon asado” the roast pork that is traditionally served during Christmas time in Latin American countries all year round. Lechoneras are very popular among Latino communities and it is no surprise that they have been popping up through out Central Florida. Most are small mom and pop type places, the definition of hole in the walls, my favorite type of establishment. For often times it is in these hole in the walls that you find the best eats (and at a great price!).

Photobucket

Lechonera Latina #2 is the offspring of (yes you guessed it) Lechonera Latina #1 located just a little west on Colonial near Dean Road. This Lechonera Latina #2 is located across from the busy Wal-Mart near the corner of Colonial Drive and Alafaya Trail. Inside you will feel like you are transported to the islands or some country in South America, the walls are painted with tropical scenes, and on this brisk day the doors were wide open to let the cool air in. There are little stalls where the food waits for your order ready to be scooped up in hefty portions and placed into your styrofoam to-go containers. In the back, huge pots filled with beef stew, stewed chicken, rice and beans, and more are all being churned and cooked fresh.

Photobucket

Specializing in Dominican, Puerto Rican, and Latin cuisine, Lechonera Latina offers a variety of dining choices. For $7.00 you can get a whole meal with rice or noodles and a side item with your choice of Carnes De Res Guisada (Beef Stew), Costilla Guisada (Rib Stew), Rabo Guisado (Ox Tail Stew), Cerdo Guisado (Pork Stew), Cabrito Guisado (Goat Stew), Bacalao Guisado (Cod Fish Stew), Bistec Con Cebolla Y Pimiento (Pepper Steak), Pernil Asado (Roasted Pork Shoulder), Cuajito (Pork Chitlins), Pollo Al Horno (Roasted Chicken), Costillita a La Barbacoa (Barbecued Ribs), Carne Frita De Cerdo (Fried Pork), Rabo De Res (Ox Tail), or Chuleta al Horno (Pork Chops). They also make sandwiches here for $5.00.

Photobucket

Ox tail with some noodles

On my first time there, I ordered the pernil sandwich, a large sandwich made with cuban bread and chunk full of roast pork. Very good. On a second time, I tried the ox tail which was also quite tasty but watch out for the bones. Overall I would recommend getting to go here.

Extreme Pita – UCF Area – Orlando

2

Photobucket

Universities and cheap yet healthy eats seem to go hand in hand. Pita Pit has been nearby UCF for the longest time, and quite successful (especially since its open late 😉 ). I am guessing Extreme Pita, which recently opened last year, is following in their footsteps to whipping out some more healthy pita sandwiches.

Photobucket

I am not a big fan of pitas as I find their texture and taste to be a bit bland, but I know many friends who could eat pitas all day every day…. With that said, I think that Extreme Pita is actually quite decent. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Pita combo and I found their chicken to be quite delicious and tender. The decor inside is very clean and sleak, definitely a franchise. Overall, its not something to go out of the way for but I’d say try them out if you’re in the UCF area, right off of University and a little past Dean towards the school.

Almondina Cookies!

0

From time to time, I get invitations to try different things as a part of this humble food blog TastyChomps.com . This is a hobby of mine and not a career so I always welcome feedback and cool new things to try. Lo and behold, we have Almondina cookies who would like to be reviewed:

Photobucket

Almondina cookies are all-natural, crispy almond cookie has no cholesterol and no added fat, salt, or preservatives and has only 30 calories. They are kind of like biscottis with almonds in them.

These extraordinary gourmet treats are created from musical conductor Yuval Zaliouk’s secret family recipe which has been passed down from generation to generation and was introduced to the market in 1989. It is wonderfully crunchy and does not have to be dipped. It is a delightful accompaniment for coffee, tea, soft cheeses and fine light wines.

Photobucket

Almondina® biscuits in the following flavors:

Original – America’s all natural favorite with almonds and raisins
Chocolate Cherry – We combined the world’s finest dark chocolate with plump cherries to produce an irresistible, decadent treat without guilt.
Choconut – Rich tasting crunchy chocolate, but low in calories
Cinnaroma® – The original biscuit for cinnamon lovers
Gingerspice – Trend setting, with chunks of Australian ginger
AlmonDuo® – Double-nut wonder with almonds and pistachios
Anniversary – Award winning delight with a touch of anise
BranTreats® – Made with oat bran and the finest cinnamon “Cookies For Breakfast”
Sesame – Irresistible, exotic, flavorful
Pumpkin Spice – A seasonal attraction with a delightful touch of fall spices combined with the highest quality almonds and pepitas(pumpkin seeds)

My favorite flavors were the Cinnaroma and the Chocolate Cherry. The pumpkin spice were also a hit and if you are a ginger lover the Gingerspice had a noticeable kick of ginger !

India 4 U – outside of Florida Mall

2

Photobucket

India 4 U was altogether a forgettable experience, not the greatest Indian place ever but also not the worst. Its a relatively new Indian restaurant, housed inside the former Hu-Hot Mongolian grill place right outside of the Florida Mall. Much of the same decor with a few tweaks.

I thought the service was lacking, our server must have still been training as she was a bit slow and unsure of the menu items. The food was great though. I remember it being a bit pricey for the quantity. They also have a buffet here during lunch time. I think in the relatively saturated market of Indian restaurants along the Orange Blossom Trail corridor, India 4 U needs to shape up or else it’ll be gone like Hu Hot before it. I was interested however in seeing their “hakka” or Indo-chinese food listed on the menu, I must try that out the next time I’m in the area.

Hamburger Mary – Church Street – Downtown Orlando

7
Photobucket

When searching for the best burger in Orlando, a few names pop up over and over again. The eclectic Hamburger Mary’s is one of those places renown for their awesome hamburgers. Located off of Church Street in Downtown Orlando and only a few blocks away from the new Amway Center, Hamburger Mary is a hamburger haven for those working downtown and looking for a good place for lunch.

Photobucket

The inside of Hamburger Mary’s is colored with purples and golds, kind of like visiting your weird aunt’s living room, complete with soft purple carpeting on the floor. They also host drag shows here with celebrity female impersonators (check show times by calling in).

On my visit, I ordered the “Blue Boy Burger”, a burger made with bleu cheese, topped with bacon and blue cheese dressing. The burger was juicy and large, and pretty much delicious. The buns were okay, could have been better.

Photobucket

The only issue I have is that it costs about $10 to park downtown which is pretty much the same price as the burger I had for lunch. The parking prices are ridiculous! How’s a guy to eat when it costs more to park? GRRR !!

lol well anyways here are some shots of the burgers from Hamburger Mary!
