Inside Look: ICEBAR Orlando Debuts New Food Menu Inside The Fire Lounge

0
If you’re looking for a cool spot around I-Drive to grab a drink and a bite, you’re in luck! World-famous ICEBAR Orlando is serving up some debut food items and we got a sneak peak at some of their latest dishes.
Known most famously for their bar area made entirely of ice (its called “ICEBAR”..duh!), ICEBAR Orlando offers a hip nightlife vibe with a unique experience.
Operating since 2008, ICEBAR Orlando is home to the world’s largest permanent icebar, where 70 tons of ice were used to create the atmosphere.
Yup, everything from the sculptures, bar, tables, seats, and even the glasses, are made entirely of ice. Prior to entering, guests have the option to don a fur coat and gloves, which we gladly did, making for a much cozier experience.
The whole venue isn’t made of ice, however. Inside you’ll also find the Fire Lounge, a comfortably energetic (and much more room temperature-y) lounge area where you can sit back, relax, and sip on signature cocktails that are just as ‘gram-worthy as they are delicious. They are even categorized based on whether you’d like them served steaming with dry ice, or topped with fire.
My wife and I sampled one from each category, along with a few of their signature cocktails.
These included the Melon Fizz, the Toasted Coconut Martini, and the Mango Dream. My personal favorite was the Blue Hurricane, a cocktail made of Bacardi Rum, Ketel One Vodka, Bombay Gin, Blue Curaçao, Lemon-lime soda, a splash of sour mix, and topped with a lemon cap filled with 151, then lit on fire by the server upon arrival.
All were delicious, prompting more than one table around us to ask what we ordered.
In addition to their eye catching drinks, The Fire Lounge serves up some excellent food options, with a menu boasting almost 30 food items. We were lucky enough to get a sneak peak at the delicious new selection of appetizers and tapas-style dishes.

Here are a Few of the New Dishes To Try at ICEBAR

The Philly Roll
made with shredded Rib-eye steak, peppers, onions, and provolone cheese wrapped in a wonton wrapper (think Philly cheesesteak in an egg roll).
The BBQ Chicken Flatbread, made with barbecue chicken, bacon, sweet red onion, Monterrey jack cheese, and a healthy drizzle of barbecue sauce and jalapeño ranch dressing.
The Meatball Sliders, 2 generously-sized sliders made of Italian meatballs, marinara, and provolone cheese.
The Caprese Flatbread, made with sweet tri-colored grape tomatoes, fresh basil and mozzarella, and topped with a balsamic reduction.
And lastly, the table favorites:
A taco trio, including:
-Banh Mi Taco, composed of tender chicken, picked vegetables, and spicy mayo.
-Blackened shrimp tacos with salsa
-Chimichurri steak taco (my personal favorite), made with cabbage, cilantro cream, and chimichurri.
ICEBAR is open every day at 5pm and Children over the age of 8 are welcome inside until 9pm, at which point the venue becomes 21+. Plans for renovation of the ice bar are in the works so stay tuned for more updates.

Soco in Thornton Park Expands Brunch Hours

Soco in Thornton Park recently celebrated their fifth year of existence and are planning some big things for 2020. Soco – whose name is inspired by the “Southern Contemporary” cuisine they serve here recently expanded their brunch hours, now served on both Saturday & Sunday from 10:30am-3pm.

We chatted briefly with Soco all about the new changes below – more to come –

Tasty Chomps: Tell us more about what’s new with the brunch this year?

We have recently expanded our brunch hours to allow guests to get an earlier start on their brunching!

Brunch Burger

What can new customers expect with the brunch at Soco?

Soco’s brunch is high energy and serves up delicious takes on southern favorites. Soco brunch is the same high quality experience guests have come to expect and anticipate for 5 years now. We are well known for our bottomless mimosas, handcrafted specialty cocktails and Bloody Marys.

Avocado Toast

What are some of the most popular dishes right now for brunch?

Chef Greg felt like chicken and waffles has had enough time to shine, so he serves up Chicken and French Toast instead! Also, our guests can’t get enough of the Lobster Eggs Benedict, Homemade Pop Tarts, and Avocado Toast.

What inspires your cooking this spring?

We are looking forward to spring, as we do to each season, for the newly arriving ingredients that we will showcase in our dishes. We’re especially looking forward to some local strawberries, fiddlehead ferns, sweet peas and wild ramps!

Shrimp & Grits

Anything else to add about the new brunch for readers to know?

If you haven’t been here for dinner or brunch yet, you’re missing out!

Raglan Road at Disney Springs

Valentine’s Day-only dessert pairing being offered at Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant:

The Irish know how to romance a sweet tooth, and Raglan Road offers a special dessert pairing for Valentine’s Day. It’ll be love at first bite when you taste our retro Black Forest Bombe—a delectable concoction of cherry chocolate mousse, kirsch crème brulee, and dark chocolate cake with tart cherry sorbet. Pair it with our special Valentine’s Day-only Bailey’s Red Velvet Iced Shake, and share if you dare. Call 407/938-0300 to book your table.

And a bit of fascinating history about St. Valentine’s Day and the Irish (if you have room):

St. Valentine, the patron saint of love, was executed in Rome and buried there in the 3rd century. Much later, an Irish priest was granted permission to exhume his remains, and now his skeleton lies under Whitefriar Church in Dublin. In 1835 an Irish Carmelite priest, Fr. John Spratt, used his Irish charm to convince then Pope Gregory XVI to dig up St. Valentine’s remains and take them home as a gift to his fellow Irishmen and women. Now, love-seeking Irish turn up at his site every St. Valentine’s looking for help in finding that special one.

Experiencing Chef’s Night with Walt Disney World Chefs at Second Harvest Food Bank

Second Harvest is always a favorite of mine since I discovered this nonprofit organization in 2012. Second Harvest feeds our neighbors in need as well as transform economically challenged lives with their culinary training program. This February 2020, they hosted a Chef’s Night in partnership with Walt Disney World to create a magical four-course meal paired with wine outside of Disney World grounds.

Chef’s Night is an evening at the food bank featuring some of Central Florida’s best chefs and cuisine, all to benefit the Second Harvest Culinary Training Program. This provides qualified, at-risk and economically disadvantaged adults with the culinary and life skills training needed to pursue a sustainable career in the food industry.

The first course is Lobster Bisque with crispy parsnip, pink tipped parsley, lemon crème fraiche, and lobster oil. This is the most savory and fresh lobster bisque I’ve had in Florida. I couldn’t put my spoon down.

The lobster bisque was paired with a refreshing Meiomi Rosé from Monterey/Sonoma/Santa Barbara, USA.

The second course is Inner Beauty with beet heart, lingonberry, rose hip, and oxalis. Like what you’re thinking, I did have a hard time figuring out how to eat this. Of course, I took off the napkin but I think the staining already happened form the beets.

Beets are one of my favorite vegetables and I loved how they incorporated it into the meal. With this dish, we had to pick it up and eat by hand. It was worth getting beet dyed onto my fingers.

“Inner Beauty” was paired with such a smooth pinot noir made by MacMurray Estate Vineyards from Russian River Valley, USA.

The main course is Beef Wellington with sweet potato puree, baby squash blossom, mushrooms, and red wine demi. I tried Beef Wellington for the first time with this dish; I must say, I have never had anything as tender as this. The cute vegetables made me think of Alice in Wonderland.

The Beef Wellington was paired with an Oberon Cabernet Sauvignon from Napa County, USA.

Before the dessert came out, we were surprised with some rich chocolates from The Ganachery in Disney Springs. They were as delicious and adorable as they look in this photograph.

The dessert course is Strawberries and Cream with Plant City strawberries, Chantilly cream and chocolate-caramel cake. It is as delicious as it looks and was paired with a Rosa Regale Sparkling Red from Piedmont, Italy, but I was too busy eating the chocolates to photograph the wine.

This was a vegan friendly alternative to the dessert offered to guests this night who made it known in advance of their dietary needs.

For future events and more information on Second Harvest, please visit their website.

First Look: Valentine’s Dinner at The Grand Bohemian Hotel

We were invited to The Boheme at The Grand Bohemian Hotel to get a sneak peek (and taste!) of their special Valentine’s Dinner menu.  This year, Executive Chef Laurent Hollaender and his team are preparing a four-course menu for $99 from 5pm – 10pm on February 14th & 15th.

Here are some special dishes and drinks that you can find on their Valentine’s Dinner menu this year:

Beef Carpaccio – Marinated dry aged wagyu, shaved parmesan, arugula, crispy capers, mustard aioli, baguette crostini.

Sea Scallop Crudo – Thinly sliced jumbo sea scallops, Meyer lemon, pink peppercorns, EVOO, yuzu, curly endive, Fleur de Sel.

Black Bass – Sweet pea purée, artichoke bottoms, confit tomatoes, Meyer Lemon Beurre Blac, blood orange reduction.

Love Potion – 14 Day Lychee infused zodiac vodka, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur, Mint, Lime, and St. George Raspberry Liquor.

Filet Mignon – Bohemian dry rub, aligot potatoes, asparagus tips, roasted heirloom carrots, morel mushroom Sauce.

Bees Knees – Plymouth gin, Black Bee Orange Blossom Honey, and lemon.

Menage a TroisBlack Bee Honey cheesecake, raspberry pistachio macaron, chocolate and passionfruit lava cake

Student entrepreneur, Khristian, from Parramore Kidz Zone and the team at The Grand Bohemian Hotel told us more about the business Black Bee Honey which began selling raw honey at the Parramore Farmers Market to benefit the Parramore neighborhood’s children.

Black Bee Honey, a non-profit business founded and run by youth in Parramore Kidz Zone, recently celebrated two years in business.  Executive Chef Laurent Hollaender has begun using the honey in several of the recipes including this delicious cheesecake, which is now the number one selling dessert at The Boheme.

Inside Look: Hocca at the Florida Mall

Hocca can be found at the Florida Mall in Orlando, FL if you’re looking for some Brazilian bites.

I wasn’t sure which drink to try so I tried all three caipirinhas and my favorite was the passion fruit one (orange color). It was a little hard to decide which was my favorite so I’m surprised I picked one.

Be careful, they’re strong. Pro tip, ask for a spoon to eat the fruit. Any of these drinks can be made without alcohol if you or your kids wanted any.

Another delicious Brazilian non-alcoholic drink is limeade! Order it. You won’t regret it because it is so refreshing.

Next, we tried some pastels – codfish, cheese, and beef.

The cheese and beef pastels were my favorite! It’s so convenient to eat too that I’d have some each morning on the way to work. They’ll come with a side of thin fries, which is so unique! I love them. Makes you feel like you’re eating less so be careful!

We were in a sandwich mood today so we picked the 1933 traditional mortadella and Hocca cheese brisket. The brisket one was my favorite because I love brisket, but the other one was also full of flavors. Both were packed with meat so no complaints there.

For dessert, we had the Vulcano, which is a tower of brownies and ice cream. We looked away for too long because my friend’s daughter scarfed it all down! Imagine the energy that produced.

The other dessert we had was an apple pastel, which is similar to an apple and caramel strudel. You can’t go wrong with that either.

For more information, visit Hocca in Orlando, FL.

Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen & Bar in Winter Park Celebrates 3 Year Anniversary

We were invited to a media event at Reel Fish Coastal Kitchen & Bar in Winter Park to celebrate their 3 year anniversary and we had the most epic time indulging in a seafood feast!

Owner Fred Thimm (pictured below) welcomed us to a seafood galore that included fresh raw bar oysters, chef specialties and fish camp classics.

Reel Fish opened in 2017 with the goal of serving sustainable fish and seafood from local waters and you can certainly tell by the quality and taste in all their authentic dishes they serve only the freshest seafood that you can get in the area.

Fish Camp Classic, wild-caught Mayport shrimp, Gulf oysters, and Red Grouper from Madeira Beach, golden fried and served with Hush Puppies and Coastal Slaw – added French Fries.

Low Country Boil, wild-caught Mayport shrimp, scallops, snow crab, PEI mussels, Andouille, red potatoes, corn on the cob, charred okra served with drawn butter and garlic ciabatta bread.

Local purveyor Colin Slemkewicz of Sublime Oyster Supply provides Reel Fish with some of the best fish and seafood in town.

Colin’s Florida oysters were spectacular and we were pleased to find out that they were caught just the day before!  They had the fresh “day at the beach” flavor to them which we all enjoyed and delighted in.

Grilled Spanish Octopus, with Chimichurri sauce and chopped tomato, onion & cucumber salad.

Shrimp & Avocado Toast, smashed avocado, cool poached shrimp, warm poached egg, chopped herbs, shaved radishes, on multigrain toast.

Chef Catch: Golden Tile from Cape Canaveral, on warm sweet potato salad with leek cream sauce.

North Beach Salad, grilled Mayport shrimp atop of arugula and romaine with goat cheese, red onion, cucumber, Campari tomato, fennel, artichoke, green apple, dried cherries, with blood orange vinaigrette.

Fried Chicken & Waffles, all-natural half-chicken, on toasted waffle, with fresh watermelon and Reel maple syrup.

Chef Catch: Pompano from Cortez, grilled with sautéed red peppers & mushrooms, with cilantro lime rice & Old Bay cream sauce.

Norman Van Aken Announces NEW Restaurant Row Location

0

Chef Norman Van Aken and partners Tom and Kim Wood announce that they are re-opening their flagship restaurant on Sand Lake’s famed Restaurant Row in the iconic Dellagio Town Center. Plans for a unique renovation of the 7,500 square foot space, revealed in first quarter 2020, will show a complete reimagining of the anchor space at the corner of Sand Lake Road and Della. Including a bold new look for 1,750 square feet of outdoor event space.

The grand opening for NORMAN’S is targeted for late summer 2020. NORMAN’S will feature a contemporary menu that will be announced in late Spring but is reported to include some of Chef Van Aken’s signature dishes as well as some of the legendary Chef’s newest inspirations. The company is continuing to employ Yusuf Yildiz as general manager of the new restaurant and Laura Fletcher as private event manager.

In August of 2019 Chef Norman Van Aken, Florida’s sole chef recipient of The James Beard “Who’s Who in America” Award, celebrated the 16th anniversary of the flagship restaurant, NORMAN’S at The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes. He said this about the decision to move to Dellagio:

“As we enter the next part of our journey – we are activating a space that is almost twice as large as our old space. This is in alignment with our goal of creating more world-class events in Orlando. Restaurant Row’s proximity to the Orange County Convention center allows us to better serve the estimated 1.4 million expected convention-goers in 2020. Dellagio is the perfect fit for our expanding vision of food and service to the community and to travelers.”

NORMAN’S features Chef and decorated Cookbook Author Norman Van Aken and his culinary team. Chef Van Aken’s internationally acclaimed “New World Cuisine” is an exciting, healthful and delicious fusion of Florida with the power of Latin, Caribbean and Asian roots.

“NORMAN’S will be an anchoring presence for Dellagio. We are working closely with the team at Norman’s on the stunning, genre-defining renovation taking place. We are excited about the prestige that this award-winning brand and iconic personality bring to the Dellagio collective footprint and to Restaurant Row.” Joe LeBas, President, Managing Director and Founder, Concorde Group Holdings, LLC

Inside Look: Hinode Sushi is Oviedo’s Best Kept Secret

We were invited to Hinode Sushi in Oviedo and we absolutely enjoyed our first visit.  It certainly exceeded our expectations.

Owner and Executive Chef George Tan (pictured below) opened Hinode Sushi a little over two years ago and every day he strives to run a sushi restaurant that delivers fresh, delicious and unique menu items and I truly believe that he has mastered that.

The atmosphere is wonderful and the food will blow your mind.  They are passionate in everything they create.  You can expect innovative sushi that is fresh, creative, and presented in a delightful manner.

With his unique palate, vivid presentation, and commitment to fresh and seasonal ingredients, Tan’s menu offerings set Hinode Sushi apart as Oviedo’s premiere sushi spot.

Here are my favorite dishes at Hinode Sushi:

1. TRIO TOWERLayers of fresh tuna, salmon, yellowtail, mango, & avocado mixed together and stacked into a tower and served with masago & an assortment of sauces.  Chef George recommended dish as my first appetizer and I am SO glad he did.  The presentation is striking and the first bite and every bite following it was a burst of delightful flavors.

2. AVOCADO FRIESAvocado slices which are then covered with panko & tempura fried served with ranch, white, eel, spicy mayo & sauce & spicy krab mix & scallions.  Best avocado fries I’ve ever had.  Crispy and delicious.  I loved the visual presentation of this dish as well.

3. BLACK WIDOW ROLLSoft shelled crab, spicy tuna, avocado, scallion topped with tuna, salmon, yellow tail, red and black tobiko and spiderweb sauce.  Stunningly beautiful and delicious.

4. STEAK HIBACHIMISO SOUP – Soy bean soup with tofu, wakame and scallions.

GINGER SALAD

STEAK HIBACHI – with fried rice and vegetables, served with a side of white sauce.  This was a solid choice for my entrée.

Be sure to check out Hinode Sushi in Oviedo for high quality sushi and friendly, attentive and accommodating service.  You will not be disappointed.Highly recommended!

Inside Look: Bulla Gastrobar Features a New Seasonal Menu

Bulla Gastrobar is a Spanish Tapas inspired restaurant located in Winter Park. Tapas are a great and popular way to share dishes amongst friends and be able to try a variety of dishes.

Bulla is currently offering a Seasonal menu selection (while keeping their regular menu options the same) of six different items which we got to try a few of.

We started with drinks and tried my personal favorite, the seasonal Spiced Old Fashioned. Buffalo Trace bourbon is mixed with winter-spiced syrup, Angostura bitters, and orange bitters to create a twist on the classic Old Fashioned. The cinnamon sticks added a nice touch to the drink to give it that extra spice.

If you’re more into fruit based drinks, you should order the Sangria 43: Red wine, brandy, Licor 43, triple sec, Sprite, pear, red apples, and chopped orange.

The first food dish we tried was the Bombas, braised oxtail fried with oxtail truffle reduction and mustard aioli. I love anything oxtail so this was a great way to start a meal.

Next were the Piquillos Rellenos. Piquillo peppers are stuffed with braised pork and pimento cheese. These bite sized, mild peppers were a great mix of flavors!

For all you pasta lovers, don’t pass on the Carrilleras con Fideos! It’s an elbow pasta dish with soffit dojo and the most tender braised beef cheeks.

Now for one of my favorites, the Butifarra Sliders. House made butiffara was served with mustard aioli and pepper relish on steamed buns with Idiazabal foam on the side. The foam sauce was to die for! It isn’t a very heavy sauce so it didn’t overpower the sliders at all.

My other favorite off the seasonal menu was the Oxtail Flatbread. Braised oxtail, grilled scallions, shredded Mahon, and caramelized onions are baked on a perfectly crispy flatbread. My advice is to keep the flatbread to yourself (like I would do) for a lighter meal instead of sharing this tapa dish!

If you’re wanting something heartier and/or with seafood, you can’t go wrong with Bulla’s Seafood Paella. I loved the type of rice they used and it was packed full of calamari, prawns, clams, and shrimp. This would be a must order for me when I go back!

Now for the arguably the best course: dessert. We tried the regular menu item Volcan de Chocolate and the seasonal special Tarta de Santiago. The Volan de Chocolate is a lava cake  with Nutella, vanilla ice cream, and raspberries. With that combination, you can’t go wrong!

However, the Tarta de Santiago was what really impressed me. It’s a traditional Spanish cake (gluten fee), toasted almonds, powdered sugar, and vanilla ice cream. The cake was very simple but it was very moist and delicious! Even though I’m a chocolate lover, this dessert was the winner for me!

Bulla Gastrobar is located 110 Orlando Ave Suite 7, Winter Park, FL 32789. Check out their website at https://bullagastrobar.com.

Inside Look: The Coop’s Brunch

A home-style fare of the South is now hosting every day at The Coop once they added Sunday’s brunch and we were able to try a few of these items this weekend.

The COOP Scramble – Diced fried chicken tender with scrambled eggs and sharp cheddar cheese, with skillet potatoes or Anson Mills creamy grits. We tried the skillet potatoes, which were diced small to allow each bite to have the crunch that I love so much. The scramble was made well with the right amount of seasoning.

Chicken & Waffle Benedict – Giant chicken tender atop Belgian waffle with a warm Maple Bourbon syrup and two poached eggs with hollandaise sauce. This has to be my favorite dish for brunch – from the savory egg yolk, salt and herb chicken to the sweet Belgian waffle with maple bourbon. It is such a wonderful mix of flavors and I’d order this every day if possible.

The Early Bird – Chicken tenders, scrambled eggs, shredded cheddar, and chopped bacon topped with scallions and creamy hollandaise. This is the result if the COOP scramble and Chicken & Waffle Benedict had a baby.

3 Blueberry Lemon Buttermilk Pancakes are popular these days. The pancakes give you a fresh note every bite you take and resembles eating dessert to me, which isn’t a bad thing because I think this would be a healthy alternative for a dessert…even though they’re pancakes.

Pulled Pork Skillet – 4R Smoked Pulled Pork layered over skillet potatoes and topped with a fried egg and Maple Bourbon BBQ Drizzle. The pulled pork is delicious as always, but I believe I didn’t have as much maple bourbon BBQ drizzle as I’d like for the sweet and smokey flavors to pop even more.

Caramelized Croissant French Toast is made with a little instant coffee touch to make the caramelization to the butterfly cut croissant. It’s nicely flavored with fluffy texture and topped with fresh fruit and walnut pieces. I can guarantee that almost everyone would love this dish if they’re not sure what to order from the menu.

Not only did I try the brunch menu, but I also tried some popular dishes and sides from their lunch and dinner menu.

Chicken & Waffles – With Maple Bourbon Syrup. Getting this meal will earn you a biscuit and two sides. The two sides we chose with this dish were bread pudding and cream corn.

The biscuit is flaky on the outside but dense on the inside, which is different in a great way for biscuits because it makes it moist. The bread pudding was my favorite side and was the right amount of sweetness. The cream corn has a slight sweetness to it as well; the corn’s texture adds a touch to the creaminess of the dish.

The 3 Piece Fried Chicken meal also came with a biscuit, but it was traded in for their skillet cornbread. For the two sides, fresh fried okra and mac & cheese were picked.

The skillet cornbread is made with bacon and other touches to add a savory to the slight sweetness. The fried chicken is coated with such delicious flavors and herbs that I’d love to eat all day. I would if it wouldn’t result in a heart attack. The fried okra was definitely fresh, but could use some spices. The mac & cheese was absolutely creamy like the cream corn.

When you stop in, don’t forget to buy a bottle of their maple bourbon. I forget every time and I regret it. Maybe it is my excuse to come back for more food!

Panda Express Celebrates Lunar New Year 2020

The first Panda Express was opened by Andrew and Peggy Cherng in 1983 in Glendale, California and has grown ever since, becoming unarguably the most successful and most recognized Chinese dining concept in America.

In 1987, Panda Express’ Chef Andy Kao developed the original Orange Chicken dish, inspired by the flavors of Hunan Province and featuring crispy chicken bites in a sweet and spicy orange sauce. Since 2016, they have served 80 million pounds of Orange Chicken.

Their dishes have generally been faithful interpretations of Chinese cuisine, with a good balance of flavor, quality, and healthfulness, and indeed our family sometimes prefer Panda Express to some Chinese take out places.

Every year, people of Chinese (as well as Vietnamese and other Asian) descent celebrate the Lunar New Year around mid-January to mid-February depending on the cycles of the moon. It is a time of great celebration – think Christmas, Thanksgiving, and New Year’s combined into one. Elders hand out red envelopes with money to children for good fortune, families gather round for big feasts, and communities throw on firework displays and lion dancing shows.

For the Lunar New Year this year, Panda Express is celebrating in two ways: with limited-time offering Firecracker Shrimp, and with augmented reality filters on Facebook and Instagram, enabling guests to enjoy and share five distinct Lunar New Year traditions with their friends and family.

Food is one of the most important parts of the holiday—families and friends come together around a table of lucky dishes, each representing a well-wish for the new year. Some examples are long noodles for long life (the longer the better), good fortune through dumplings, and sweets for a “sweet” year.

Inspired by the firecrackers that line the streets during Lunar New Year, the new Firecracker Shrimp features hand-chopped red and yellow bell peppers, onions, string beans, whole dried chilies, and large, succulent shrimp, wok-tossed in a savory black bean sauce and is also under 110 calories per serving.

“Every year, we at Panda celebrate the first day of Lunar New Year by gifting lucky red envelopes to all of our guests; and this year, we are thrilled to further invite them into this wonder-filled celebration through our themed AR experience,” said Andrea Cherng, Chief Marketing Officer at Panda Express. “The Lunar New Year holiday is at heart about coming together to bring and share joy and good fortune. As a holiday that is deeply rooted in our culture, we are honored to bring millions of people together to celebrate Lunar New Year through our crave-worthy food and our new digital experience.”

Each of Panda Express’ five AR filters highlights a cultural tradition celebrating the Lunar New Year, the foremost holiday period in China and other Asian countries. The filters, which overlay digital images on a view of the real world, include games to catch virtual food falling from the top of the screen or to throw firecrackers that ward off evil spirits. Mobile users also can decorate selfies with lion masks and virtual lanterns, or swipe up to unlock surprises in red envelopes, an AR version of the gift-giving tradition in several Asian cultures.

For more information on Panda Express and the Lunar New Year celebration, visit PandaLNY.com and follow the #pandalny celebration on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

What can people expect when attending the Masquerade At The Edison event?

Guests can expect to enter a fantasy world of electrifying mystique and intrigue at The Edison’s inaugural Masquerade. From the moment they cross the threshold, visitors should be prepared to be surprised and delighted around every corner as all party goers will be dressed incognito during a magical evening shrouded in an air of secrecy.

Where does the inspiration behind the Masquerade come from?

While the event does not directly tie into Mardi Gras (also known as Carnevale in Italy), it draws inspiration from the traditionally opulent celebration with indulgent food, vibrant décor, elaborate costumes, and an atmosphere of decadent revelry.

Guests can begin their evening with a sit-down dinner reservation during the Carnevale celebration happening in tandem next door at Maria & Enzo’s before venturing over to The Edison for drinks, dancing, and more at Masquerade.

What type of music or other activities will occur this evening?

The evening’s electrifying entertainment lineup will consist of the upbeat musical stylings of The Edison’s very own house-band, The Pearl Street Players, along with a DJ and live variety act performances ranging from a trapeze artist to stilt walkers.

Why is The Edison a great place to have this event?

At The Edison, visitors cross the threshold into a world of industrial-gothic opulence, where imagination and innovation intertwine to deliver an unforgettable experience. The live entertainment and signature cocktails offered make this abandoned power plant a can’t miss destination, perfect for a special event such as Masquerade.

347 Grille by Coach Shula – Lake Mary

0

Coach Don Shula is an American sports legend, best known as the most “winningest” coach with 347 overall wins and for leading his team to the only perfect season in NFL history (1972 Miami Dolphins).

In 1989, Coach Shula began Shula’s Steak House restaurant group and today the company has grown to over six different restaurant concepts including Shula’s Steak House, Shula’s Bar and Grill, Shula’s 2, Shula’s on the Beach, and 347 Grille.

In the Orlando area, most residents are probably most aware of the long time Shula’s Steak House located at Walt Disney World’s Swan and Dolphin Resort. But in Lake Mary, there is a second Shula restaurant concept known as 347 Grille, a upscale sports dining restaurant.

Shula’s 347 Grille, located inside the Westin Lake Mary Hotel, features beef that use many of the same custom cuts and aging process from the legendary Shula’s Steak House. The restaurant features American fare in addition to steaks and burgers and features a full bar, served in a relaxed casual atmosphere. We were recently invited to check out the restaurant and their new offerings this spring.

If you have been to Shula’s at the Swan and Dolphin, you may be familiar with the succulent New Orleans BBQ Shrimp dish – the dish here at Shula’s 347 Grille is just as good and maybe even better what I remember at Shula’s, served with a creamy, delicious Cajun style sauce with garlic crostini bread.

Despite being known for their superior steaks, there’s a few new dishes like the Grilled Salmon and the Tuna Poke, accentuating their seafood items executed quite well.

Crispy BBQ Pork Belly* $12.00
Carrot Romesco, Lemon Marmalade

New Orleans BBQ Shrimp* $13.00
Creamy Cajun Sauce, Garlic Crostini

Bleu Cheese Chips $6.00

Tuna Poke* $15.00
Gochujang Dressing, Crispy Wonton Chips

French Dip Sandwich

Grilled Salmon* $23.00
Maple Mustard Glaze, Pomme Puree, Broccoli, Beurre Blanc

The restaurant is led by Chef de Cuisine Carmen Pagan-Lozado who moved to Florida from Puerto Rico in 2011. She started working at Rio Bravo where she found her love for food and joined the 347 Grille by Coach Shula team in 2017 as a line chef while she attended school at Daytona State College. Carmen quickly worked her way through all the stations in the kitchen and when she graduated with her Associates in Culinary Arts Management the Shula Chef position became available. She has proved to be an asset to her team and her talent and originality has greatly benefited the operation, both in the restaurant and in for banquet operations.

Specials: Happy hour Mon. – Fri. 4PM to 7PM, appetizers for $3, $4 or $7 and flights of martinis, wine or beer for $3.47

Baos on Baos on Baos at Hot Asian Buns

Hot Asian Buns is known to be one of the only places with hot Asian bao buns that are handmade from scratch with all natural ingredients. Each of their fluffy buns are made to order with reinvented original recipes.

Hot Asian Buns are currently a food truck, but do stationary pop ups. They’re currently at Poké Stop near UCF until Friday, January 31, 2020 before the food truck is ready to hit the road again! We were glad to taste almost everything on the menu.

Start your meal with Loaded Kimchi Fries topped with Gochujang, horsey sauce, queso fresco, sesame, and scallions. Hear me out. When thinking of something with kimchi, I would think it would overpower the fries. However, it adds a nice touch and the flavors blend well with all the other toppings delivered to your palate with some crispy fries.

Pork Asada includes citrus roasted pork, mojo aioli, pickled onions, chicharrones, and cilantro. This has such wonderful flavors, which remind me of authentic Mexican tacos. My mind and tastebuds were so confused when eating this and I’m ok with that. This is one for the books and I’d love for more toppings and lime on top.

Korean Fried Chicken is a spicy item on the menu with Gochujang, creamy slaw, sesame, and scallions. Crispy with the right amount of sauce, which says a lot because many places add too much sauces and makes it overpowering.

12 Hour Smoked Brisket with kimchi, horsey sauce, daikon, and scallions is another favorite of mine. Not sure if I like this more than the Pork Asada or not. Maybe I love them equally. Try both this and the Pork Asada, then let me know which one is your favorite.

Pork Belly Confit topped with pickled mustard greens, hoisin sauce, peanut powder, and cilantro. This pork belly is so moist, but I wish it was larger… only because I love pork belly. Although the peanut powder adds a nice crunch, it would be an interesting twist if this pork belly had a crispy skin to it and add an additional crunch. Yet, I don’t think it would be as healthy as this bao.

Don’t stop now with your eating because we sure didn’t. Instead, we  had the Thai Tea Crème Brûlée with torched sugar and lime zest. This is one of the best crème brûlées I have ever had and it’s so great being unique with the Thai tea flavors.

Stop by their pop up now while you can! Follow them on Facebook and Instagram to keep an eye on their buns.

Interview with Chef Chastity of Oviedo Brewing Co.

We got the inside scoop of what makes Chef Chastity the amazing, brave and badass chef that she is today. From tasting some of her delicious bites to pairing them to beers at Oviedo Brewing Co, I couldn’t get enough.

When Chef Chastity was younger, she would try to make things all the time – toothpaste, paint, glue, etc. It wasn’t until she got older that she became more interested in textures, flavor profiles, and how to achieve such feats. With this growth, she decided on culinary school after taking a tour after she graduated college at J&W in Rhode Island.

When asked who inspired her to cook, she chose Emeril Lagasse. She was a huge fan as she and her family would sit and watch every single one of his episodes. She loves how he commanded attention from the room with his bubbly and fun nature, yet he didn’t beat around the bush.

She believed he had an abundance of knowledge so you would feel comfortable and excited by everything he was explaining and doing. Between you and I (and Chef Chastity), Chef Chastity had a collection of the Mrs. Dash seasonings and toothpaste he collaborated with.

Now, if anyone knows Jim Henson, let him know that Chef Chastity would like to cook for him. When asked who she would love to cook for, he’s her man! He has nothing to do with the culinary world, but he was one of her idols as a child.

She was fixated on all of his creations because they bring out every element and spectrum of emotions. Her inspiration is to create the same feelings for him with dishes inspired by his creations that were so impressionable to me.

Back at the brewing co, she was asked what her favorite item on the menu. She said that she’s very proud of the research, time and tasting they did to regulate the pizza. From their 6+ hour Za Sauce to the vegan dough, Chef Chastity said it’s been a labor of love that’s resulted in a few extra pounds since she signed onto the brewery. Sounds like those extra pounds were well worth it even though they’re not noticeable whatsoever.

Lastly, when Chef Chastity isn’t hard at work, you can probably find her at Hot Dog Heaven or Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream. Can’t find any other comfort food like a hot dog or homemade ice cream!

If you find yourself in the neighborhood, stop by Oviedo Brewing Co. to check out some of Chef Chastity’s amazing dishes like the photos I’ve taken and displayed in this post. She has created many tasty dishes and I don’t know which I’d recommend first because I recommend them all.

Inside Look: Chicken Fire Expands Their Menu

Since Chicken Fire started their pop ups a few months ago, they signed a temporary permanent location with A La Cart on Irvington Ave of Orlando, FL for 6 months starting Jan 1, 2020. So far, they have been bringing in more foot traffic for A La Cart, both old and new faces.

From the beginning, Kwame has been getting an A team crew ready to bring their A game every day to serve delicious Nashville hot chicken with a side of humble hospitality that will make you coming back for more.

Sure, his chicken is great and his creations have cohesively blended flavors that draws people in, but it is the personal touch they add that keeps me coming back for more.

For February, they will begin serving chicken sandwiches that will blow your mind. His sandwiches are made up of his delicious chicken, fire sauce, cole slaw, and pickles cuddled up between hot and toasted buns.

I recommend going a heat level higher and requesting extra honey for the chicken! The honey will add an additional sweetness, but the higher head level will prevent the spices from being overwhelmed by the sweet honey and cole slaw. Another recommendation I’d like to make is to eat the sandwich fast because the bottom bun will become a little soggy from all the delicious sauces and flavors.

For those who don’t fancy sandwiches, he is still serving up jumbo tenders from the original menu. With either the sandwiches or tenders alone, you can pick the heat level from the extensive heat list he provides – soulful (not spicy at all), meek, mild, medium, hot, hot X, hot X^2.

The soulful is actually great if you have children that want a kids meal at A La Cart. Chicken Fire has a kid box, which is a great for your kids to enjoy while you get a box for yourself and not have to worry about bringing outside food. Pictured is the hot box, which has two tenders. However, the kid box only has one in case you’re worried your kids won’t be able to eat two tenders.

On the other heat spectrum, you read it right! His secret menu actually includes levels hotter than their listed Hot as well as meek, which is soulful with a slight kick if you can’t handle the mild. Don’t worry, no one blames you because his chicken is definitely spicy! Unless you are Gary M.

Gary must be made of steel because he’ll eat the Hot X^2 socially for fun. Kwame leaks out that he’s possibly creating something hotter just to quench Gary’s heat thirst.

You’ll come with an empty stomach, but I can guarantee that you’ll leave with a full stomach, numb mouth and warm heart after meeting Kwame and enjoying his food. Don’t worry, there’s an ice cream truck there to help you calm the heat that numbs your mouth  and helps in calming the tornado happening in your stomach.

If you think that Chicken Fire has chicken included with every item order, you’re quite mistaken because they have a secret menu item that will still fulfill the guarantee. Hot Fries (photographed by: Isha Shah) are a must if you’re not in the mood for chicken or you’re a vegetarian, but still want to taste their flavors.

For more information, check out their Facebook and follow them on Instagram at @EatChickenFire …you might want to do both so you can find out where their next adventure leads them in 6 months! They could be coming to Oviedo’s future food hall.

Not to mention, you’ll want to follow him to see what and when he’ll have special limited edition items so you can taste it all!
