Dragonfly Robata hosts Tokyo Soul

Dragonfly Robata hosted an encore seating of their Tokyo Soul dinner event on December 6-7, 2018. The event and dishes were inspired by street food classics born in Tokyo, and seasoned with the flavors of the deep South Southern Kitchen, making this dinner event unique to Dr. Phillips.

The event consists of a limited number of seats at a long table where you can sit with familiar friends as well as make new friends with others next to you.

This event consisted of a 6-course meal beginning with a Japanese Inspired Souse with braised daikon, carrot, scallion, and inari. This dish starts the event by warming your soul with brilliant flavors, which is great on a chilly night.

Family-Style Tempura Corn Fritters served with Shirasu shies and Japanese horseradish. The corn fritters are crispy with each bite and sweet from the corn. There are slight distinct notes of the horseradish, which is not overwhelming to the palate.

The corn fritters is served with a Sake cucumber Masu Box, which traditionally signals the wealth and generosity of the restaurant to the person who drinks from it. The sake itself is light, refreshing and floral.

The Beer Batter Spanish mackeral is served with Tsukemono and a house-made house sauce. This dish consists of a crispy batter with fish that has a soft texture and disintegrates in the mouth.

Sapporo-hibiscus shandy is paired with the mackeral and flavors resemble grapefruit seltzer.

The next dish is a 36 hour Sous-vide brisket served with potato salad, Jus and micro wasabi. The brisket is very soft, moist and falls apart easily. Flavors are fresh and delightful. However, not each dish is consistent in texture.

The Japanese whisky-tea cocktail is paired with the brisket. It tastes like sweet tea with intense honey flavors.

Dish number 5 is the Chef Choice Seasonal Omakase, which is Cajun crusted salmon sashimi and crawfish maki-roll photographed above. The Salmon is fresh with simple seasoning to bring out natural salmon notes. The Crawfish maki-roll has a sweet honey taste along with a crispy texture of the crawfish and softness of the rice coating.

This fresh seafood dish is paired with the Shochu-pomegranate cocktail, which is sweet and tart at the same time.

The final dish is the Honey Carrot Castella, which is a Japanese sponge cake, carrot ginger mousse, persimmon, and candied bacon. The sponge cake is dense and solid, but moist at the same time; there are notes of a unique taste thanks to the ginger and cinnamon. The persimmons seemed to be soaked or infuse with sweet ginger flavor. Paired with the dessert is the Umeshu (Plum) cocktail, which is sweet in flavor.

While waiting for the event to begin or for the next dish to roll out, feel free to ask for a drink menu. Photographed here is the Green Tea’s Knees cocktail, which consists of fig infused Jim Beam, matcha honey and yuzu. It is a delicious and strong drink that is sweetened just right.

Holiday Night of Lights at Rosen Hotels & Resorts

What are your plans for Christmas?

Every year, my family dines at one of the Rosen Hotels for their Christmas Day buffet and we take a picture with Mr. Rosen himself, pictured above.  It’s become a family tradition of ours ever since we met him during a Christmas Day buffet back in 2014 when he greeted our table and asked us how we were doing.  My mom immediately recognized him from reading about him in the papers and asked him if he was Mr. Rosen and he confirmed and allowed us to take a picture with him.  He’s seriously the best.

Life came back to a full circle when I was invited to attend Rosen Hotels & Resorts’ first-ever Holiday Night of Lights media event to preview what each hotel is doing for their Christmas Day buffet & holiday events this year.  The night started with all 50 bloggers and friends hopping onto a snazzy two-story bus (our “sleigh” for the night that was generously donated by City Sightseeing Tours Orlando) to visit all 7 Rosen properties and see their holiday lights, with delicious bites at each stop.

At Rosen Hotels, their attention to detail is always impeccable, nothing ever gets overlooked and the customer service is top-notch.  I am so looking forward to making it out to the Christmas Day buffet at one of the Rosen Hotels this year with my family.

First Stop – Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista for chocolate peppermint mocktinis, Santa Claus mopolitan, crab cakes, caprese skewers, dunking donut station, sweets, and a tour of the beautiful Bella Vista event venue.

Second Stop – Rosen Inn Closest to Universal for a hibachi performance from the Shogun chefs (I wasn’t able to get a picture of them in action because they were super fast) and sushi & sake from the Sakura Bar.

Third Stop Rosen Inn International for “The Rosen Tree” lighting, cesar salad cups and sweet & spicy meatballs

Fourth Stop – Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando for selfies with an elfie, chicken wellington, mushroom puff and Christmas cookie

Fifth Stop – Rosen Plaza – for a sneak preview of the upcoming Dec. 15 Iced Out! event (free to the public), an ice luge with a signature cocktails, fig & manchego lollipops, lobster corndogs and baby lamb chops prepared by Executive Chef Michael and team.

Sixth Stop – Rosen Centre – for a greeting by Christmas carolers, a real gingerbread house, Harry’s ropa vieja empanada, pineapple ceviche, strawberry cheesecake, pumpkin cheesecake, and drinks from Harry’s Poolside Bar & Grill

Seventh Stop – Rosen Shingle Creek for a sneak preview of the charity trees (which will be displayed in the hotel’s grand lobby) decorated by 24 local non-profits throughout Orlando, and a festive mix and mingle with the hotel and charity partners.

Thanks Mr. Rosen for hosting us in such a family way!

First Look: Slapfish opens first Florida location in Waterford Lakes

We were invited to check out and taste the new Slapfish in Waterford Lakes Town Center (located in between the Regal Cinemas and LA Fitness) which just opened last month.   This Slapfish location is special because it is their first location in Florida.  The backstory of Slapfish is that they started off as a popular seafood food truck in California back in 2011 and now they operate 13 stores nationwide, with plans to open up in Arizona, Colorado, Washington D.C., Idaho, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah,  Virginia, and overseas in London soon.

Slapfish – Waterford Lakes is a beautiful, clean, bright and airy establishment with plenty of extra outdoor seating.  The friendly and energetic area manager Joshua and his awesome team members took very good care of us.  We got to try a lot of their menu items and out of them all, my favorites were the traditional lobster roll & clobster grilled cheese, which were super fresh and rich in flavor.

TRADITIONAL LOBSTER ROLL – SERVED WARM TOSSED LIGHTLY IN DRAWN BUTTER, MAYO & LEMON

CLOBSTER GRILLED CHEESE – MELTING MIX OF LOBSTER, CRAB AND A CREAMY HERB SAUCE

FISH & CHIPS – CRISPY FLAKEY WHITEFISH SERVED WITH HOUSEMADE TARTAR SAUCE AND REAL FRIES

HAWAIIAN BOWL – GARLIC SHRIMP, PINEAPPLE, SEASONED RICE, HAND PICKED SALAD

POKE BOWL – FRESH TUNA POKE, SEASONED RICE, CHIPS AND GREENS

SHRIMP AND GRITS

First Look: The Golden Pod – International Drive

Aussie Mate Burger – Beef pattie, caramelized onion, grilled bacon, egg, American cheese, lettuce, tomato & beetroot on a sesame bun.

We were invited to The Golden Pod – Restaurant & Bar on International Drive (located next door to The Tilted Kilt) for a media preview with other local foodies and our experience was simply amazing.  The Golden Pod is Orlando’s best kept secret.  They have high quality food and superior service in a pleasant environment.

Here are some interesting takeaways about The Golden Pod:

  1. The owner is from Australia.
  2. They make their own chocolate in house.
  3. They serve grilled kangaroo but I wasn’t ready to try it so I ordered the Aussie Mate burger (picture above) and it was really tasty.
  4. You can print any photo on your coffee via cellphone.  Selfie lattes, anyone?
  5. They are open daily until 2am.

For our appetizer, we ordered the crispy calamari and it was fried to perfection.

A Superfood Bowl – Brazilian acai, banana, almond milk and topped with granola, seasonal fruit, and pink chocolate pearls (optional).  Easily one of the best açaí bowls I’ve ever had.

My friend Gustavo (@dafoodie) ordered the Trio of Sliders and he tore them up!
– Pulled pork with slaw and spicy dressing
– Crumbled and chickened tenderloin, avocado and arugula
– Beef with cheese and tomato chutney

My friend Anthony ordered their Cookies ‘n Cream Shake and he enjoyed it!

Gustavo’s wife, Mary, ordered their Vanilla Love Pod and she loved it! It’s a chocolate dome over vanilla ice cream, pear compote and hazelnuts.  Warm chocolate sauce is poured over the chocolate dome to melt it down before consumption.

Cocina 214 Launches New Menu

We were able to explore some dishes on the new menu of Cocina 214 with some new delicious drinks. The new menu is launched at both their Winter Park and Daytona Beach locations.

The Nacho Macho was brought out for everyone to share while we wait for the main dishes. The Nacho Macho is a vegetarian and gluten free dish made up of tortilla chips toped with queso, black beans, pico de gallo, shredded lettuce, and sour cream. All of the ingredients mesh well as they dance on your tastebuds.

The Chicken Fajitas is served with sour cream, pico de gallo, guacamole, fresh homemade tortillas (corn or flour), rice, and beans. The vegetables with the chicken fajitas are delicious and chicken shows beautiful charred markings. There is also a vegetarian version of the chicken fajitas for those that don’t fancy meat!

The Chicken Flautas are served with refried beans, guacamole, romaine lettuce, queso fresco, sour cream, tomatoes, and verde salsa. This dish is delicious with a crispy texture under all the sauces and vegetables. The sauces add a moistness to each bite you take of this dish.

Wash down your bites with The Cocina Guavarita, which is the Margarita Contest Winner. It’s made with Don Julio Blanco, Cointreau, and guava all served on the rocks. It’s slightly tart from the guava, but refreshing.

For a stronger kick, try the Flex On The Beach. It’s made of Tierras Organic Tequila, Peach Schnapps, pineapple juice, Blue Curacao, lime juice, and agave served on the rocks. This is my favorite of the two, but try them both and let me know what you think!

Don’t worry, there are additional drinks and bites you can also try, which includes the happy hour menu.

After dinner, try some delicious desserts as well as taste a variety of spirits and tequila Cocina 214 has in stock.

Exclusive: Domu Chibi coming soon to East Orlando

0

We spoke with Sean aka Sonny Nguyen of Domu Dynasty, right off the heels of their recent successful launch of Domu in Jacksonville, the second Domu ever after the wildly popular Orlando ramen shop.

Here is what you need to know about Domu Chibi, the new concept coming to East Orlando/ Waterford Lakes this winter!

——

DOMU Chibi, which means “little DOMU”, will be a fast-casual ramen shop in East Orlando at the Waterford Lakes Town Center. We will be located in between Fresh Kitchen and Jeremiah’s Italian Ice at 869 N. Alafaya Trl. – Orlando, FL 32828.

Chibi is aiming to open sometime next month (December 2018) and will offer 6 varieties of ramen which include a tonkotsu, shoyu, shio, curry, butter miso, and a vegan option. We will be making all of the broths in-house following the same recipes as the current flagship store.

Our goal is to provide a more economical and quick version of our ramen without sacrificing the integrity of what our bowls are. We will offer our own versions of proteins such as seared pork belly, miso-marinated chicken, and diced tofu as well as limited toppings to keep the cost to the customer at under $10 a bowl.

In addition, we will be offering 4 sides to go with the ramen. A rendition of our “fingerling bravas” will be translated to an easy to eat and handheld version called “bravas fries” which will be seasoned fries tossed in our spicy kewpie mayo, topped with sour cream, scallions, japanese spices, and fried garlic. Chicken karaage, seared gyoza, and edamame tossed in our signature ginger-onion jam will also make a feature on the menu.

When visiting Chibi, you will be greeted by self-ordering kiosk where you can make your selections, pay, and pick up your order when you’re number is called at the end of the counter. We want to try to streamline the process so the customer can get exactly what they want and quick. This style of dining is very popular at ramen shops in Japan so we have adapted a modern day version of that here. Expect all tableware to be disposable from the ramen bowls to the paper cups that will bring you back to the 90s.

We have had tremendous support from the city of Orlando over the past few years and we couldn’t have done it or gotten this far without you. We hope that Chibi will help fulfill the need of ramen on the east side.

Domu Chibi Orlando

Word from DOMU Chef/Owner Sonny Nguyen –

Although I am Vietnamese, I have deep respect for the Japanese culture and their cuisine which is what I’m focused in.

I am currently learning the art of making noodles ranging from ramen, to udon, to soba. The art of making noodles by hand I feel is very important because it gives us the understanding of the roots so that we can continue to educate the future on these traditions. The noodle master I am training under has been making noodles for 18 years in Tokyo and has pioneered some of the biggest restaurants in New York as well as taught big name Michelin chefs such as Dan Barber from Blue Hill how to make soba.

My main focus now and days is building the DOMU brand which is coined under the restaurant group called “DOMU Dynasty”. The restaurant group will soon be the umbrella to not only DOMU but also DOMU Chibi and Tori Tori.

My chefs and I have been working hard lately on the Tori Tori menu which will be bar-forward but we want to make sure we accompany that with good japanese bar food. Tori Tori will be a great showcase of japanese techniques that we hope to share with Orlando that will hopefully be a game changer.

DOMU to me is more than just a restaurant, bar or brand. Bringing it from a childhood business plan to fruition in 2016 is truly a dream come true. We have accomplished so much in the short 2 years that we have been around hitting accolades of winning local awards for our ramen, to winning best local chef, to even being on TV! Never in a million years would I have thought that my restaurant would be featured on shows that I use to sit on the other side of the TV and watched. Also being able to meet Andrew Zimmern in person and to hear all the great things he had to say is pretty much all I needed in my culinary career.

Although we have had a blessed few years, I feel like we have a lot more to do. Especially in my home town of Orlando. It has been my goal since the opening of DOMU to put Orlando on the map and that goal still stands as we move forward with our future plans and what’s to come.

First Look: Orlando Forum Rock Dinner Show – International Drive

We were invited to experience Orlando’s newest dinner show, Orlando Forum Rock Dinner Show located at 6362 International Drive, Orlando FL 32819 (near the old Wet n’ Wild) and we absolutely loved everything about it!  They have great entertainment, delicious and fulfilling dinner, friendly staff, and a relaxed & intimate atmosphere.

During our media dinner, we watched Elvis, Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Prince, and Katie Perry for a whole hour of popular high energy covers and choreographed dancing that will keep your eye on stage.  They not only looked the part but they also sounded the part, making it really fun to sing along to every song they performed.  The backup singer and backup dancers were all perfection as well.

These Vegas-style nightly dinner shows are available every day of the week starting at 6:30pm.  For the full names of the cast, menu, tickets prices, and more, please visit: orlando-forum.com

First Look: Bulgogi House – Korean BBQ in West Orlando

0

All you can eat Korean BBQ has come to west Orlando. Previously, Izziban and Korea House on East Colonial were the mainstays if you wanted all you can eat Korean grilled meats on your table. They are located a little west of downtown Orlando and south of College Park in a place that once was home to a Chicago style Italian beef sandwich shop, among other short lived establishments. I think the tight parking situation in the back may attribute to some of this.

For lunch, there is a variety of Korean dishes a la carte to choose if you do not wish to have all you can eat Korean bbq.

For $26.99, you can choose from your regular assortment of Korean style meats including bulgogi and kalbi short rib, but there’s also some more interesting cuts like beef tongue, pork jowl, beef intestines, and beef entrails (they might want to look into a better translation – i think maybe beef chitterlings is a better term?). Also included: a wonderful steamed egg dish and Korean kim chi style stews as well as the traditional assortment of Korean pickled dishes. The kim chi was great but I do wish they had more variety of banchan appetizers. On our visit in early summer, it was humid and hot outside, and hot and humid inside – which is not the best weather for having hot and humid Korean barbecue grilling – but I am told the owners have added more A/C to help cool down the heat so that is great news.

Overall, the meat quality here is good – I think it is above Izziban’s quality but Korea House’s quality reigns supreme thus far. Definitely worth a try, especially if you are an adventurous eater – but they have regular dishes for those not so adventurous as well!

Cheeselandia Orlando

A little wedge of Wisconsin was brought to Central Florida to share. Their most famous and award-winning cheesy residents are hitting the road and showcased at Winter Park for a VIP cheese event at the Winter Park Farmers’ Market on Thursday, November 8.

This special gathering included hors d’oeuvres from Swine & Sons, an opportunity to mingle with Wisconsin cheese experts, a build-your-own cheeseboard station, Instagram photo ops, a few mystery surprises, and – of course – all the Wisconsin cheese our hearts (and mouths) could ever desire. This was a ticket to experience the best of Cheeselandia without having to leave home.

Inside, there’s a build-your-own cheeseboard station that ran out of different cheeses and meats to add to the plate if you don’t find it quickly. However, we turned around and added items from the main station of treats for us to try.

One of the most fun part of the night is having an awesome photo op as well as designing our own cheeseboard. We won’t post our awesome photo op, but I’ll show you my plate…that is probably messier than anything.

Along with the bites, we were offered white wine, red wine, rosé, and beer. Certain drinks tasted better with different bites. To learn about pairing, we experienced a nice cheese pairing.

The different types of Wisconsin cheeses could be paired as so. My favorite was the Sartori Merlot Bellavitano with dark chocolate, while others had different palates.

So many cheeses were present that have been aged various number of years.

To top off a fun and cheesy night, we were given a lunch box with a number of cheese we were allowed to choose from the available options provided!

For a little slice of heaven, check out their website: https://www.cheeselandia.com

Pollo D’oro: Authentic & Delicious

Pollo D’oro is a Latin American family owned restaurant created by two brothers and their families working together to bring you delicious and authentic flavors. Everyone at this restaurant is warm and welcoming from the time you walk through the door to ensure you the best experience they can offer.

The menu offers a number of dishes where the protein can be ordered on its own or in a meal for yourself or family portion. Meals offered include options for certain sides, while you can order other sides separately.

You can see everything behind the scenes when looking past the counter to see how your dishes are made. All meats are fresh and marinated in tropical juices and spices. Here, you can see my chicken being cooked on the grill made per order, which may take a little time before it makes it to your table to ensure freshness.

While waiting for your food, check out the sauce bar filled with delicious concoctions you can create for your palate. My favorites include the garlic sauce for fried items, while I enjoy the house sauce and pink sauce for my grilled chicken. The house sauce has nice spices, while the pink sauce is more mellow and is mayonnaise based.

With your grilled chicken, they also provide some tortilla if you’d like to create a mini taco or wrap yourself. Adds a little fun to your meal!

The Grilled Chicken was SO flavorful, moist and tender with crispy skin. The flavors are amazing and makes my mouth water starting a few hours after eating this dish. I wish I had more… if only I lived closer. The yellow rice brings its own flavors to the table and served with some vegetables mixed in.

Grilled chicken with bone-in isn’t your fancy for this meal? Try their Boneless Chicken Breast Platter, which can be served with white rice and beans like how it is pictured here. The chicken is served on fresh lettuce and tomato slices with cooked onions to top it off.  Again, the chicken is flavorful, tender and moist no matter what method it’s made and served. The beans at this restaurant is soft but not mushy, which makes a nice additional protein to your dish.

Another chicken dish not photographed (because I was too excited and ate it fast) is their Fried Chicken Wings, which is great when dipped in the garlic sauce.

If you’re not in the mood for chicken, Pollo D’oro also offers other proteins offered in platters, sandwiches or salads. However, they may suggest the chicken for your first visit because it is their bread and butter!

Sweet Plantains can be offered as a small or large side. Both options are great to share with friends and family while enjoying your meal. Growing up in South Florida, I have missed delicious sweet plantains and I’m glad I found a place can make it similar to the sweet plantains I’ve had when down south.

Before you leave, try the unique Tres Leches (3 Milk Flan) cake made in-house. It’s unique at this location with the fruit they’ve added to the cake. A little pineapple adds a new touch to the cake itself.

For a taste, stop by Pollo D’oro at 4542 Hoffner Ave, Orlando, FL 32812 or give them a call at (407) 270-4757.
