A Food Lover’s Guide to the SRQ (Sarasota) – Our Perfect Weekend Itinerary for Sunny Sarasota

The Sarasota area is full of history, beauty and some incredible food. It was the official winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus beginning in 1927, which went on to create a lasting legacy that is still celebrated to this day.

Located on Florida’s Gulf Coast about an hour south of Tampa, Sarasota is one of Florida’s hidden treasures. It consistently ranks among the top ‘small city’ destinations and top Florida cities with healthy food. Lido Key, Siesta Key and St. Armands Key are all located within Sarasota borders, offering spectacular beaches right on the Gulf of Mexico.

Sarasota has a ton to offer its visitors, and thus is the perfect destination for a long weekend getaway. While the city is known for its cultural and recreational activities and attractions including lovely beaches, historic museums, gardens and performing arts, we were excited to experience Sarasota through its delicious food.

Visitors can treat their palates to a variety of cuisines, from sustainable seafood and locally sourced produce with award-winning chefs and wine lists. Gourmet grocers, weekly farmers markets and local boutiques make it easy for vacationers to pack a picnic or cook a fresh meal for themselves full of local flavor. And did you know Sarasota is home to the Amish community of Pinecraft, which sells thousands of pies each Thanksgiving day? We were recently invited by Visit Sarasota: Beaches and Beyond to take a look at all that Sarasota has to offer.

Recent Accolades for the Sarasota area:

  • Siesta Beach is #1 in the U.S. and #11 in the world according to TripAdvisor’s 2020 Travelers’ Choice™ Awards (also the #1 Beach in 2017 and 2015)
  • Hot Wire’s #4 “Itty Bitty City” in its “Best Cities for a Quickie”
  • Forbes’ #5 Top 10 Spring Break Destination
  • WalletHub’s “Best Small Cities in America”
  • Sarasota has the most restaurants per capita for “small cities” according to WalletHub
  • Rent.com named Sarasota the Best City for Vegans in America
  • #1 Best Places to Retire in the U.S. in 2020-21 (US News and World Report)

Here is Our Perfect Weekend Itinerary for Sunny Sarasota: A Food Lover’s Guide to SRQ

Friday

Sarasota is home to many unique hotels filled with history and art. We chose to stay at The Sarasota Modern, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel for its prime location and stunning amenities. We stayed in the Deluxe Junior Suite, which featured a king bed, sectional sofa, room divider and a walk-in shower. Upon checking in, we were greeted by the complimentary valet service, and welcomed during our check-in with celebratory sangrias.

Rodizio Grill – The Brazilian Steakhouse – Sarasota, Florida

For dinner, we stopped by Rodizio Grill – The Brazilian Steakhouse. Rodizio offers all-you-can-eat Brazilian food (which includes authentic salads, sides and fresh meats) for only $34.99. If you aren’t interested in the meats, $22.99 will get you unlimited salads and sides.

The traditional Brazilian sides include dishes like farofa, pão de queijo (our favorite), macarrão, bananas fritas and much more.

However, the star of the show is without a doubt the array of freshly grilled meats. A variety of beef options were available, as well as some chicken, pork and even abacaxí (fresh glazed and grilled pineapple). The beef cuts were all perfectly seasoned, nice and crispy on the outside while fresh and juicy on the inside. Any meat lover is sure to be impressed.

Rodizio is a wonderful option for an incredibly filling meal, that is worth the price if you plan to visit on an empty stomach. We recommend either having an early lunch before, or skipping lunch and enjoying an early dinner to fully get the best experience.

Saturday

We kick-started our Saturday with our own personal food tour of St. Armands. St. Armands is a key off the coast of downtown Sarasota, originally founded and designed by John Ringling himself. Key Culinary Tours offers a variety of food tours around the Sarasota area, with both private and group options. The tours are about $75 per person plus tax, which is a fair price considering they include food from three restaurants, two unique shops and even a surprise dessert at the end.

Key Culinary Tours

First up on the tour is Le Colonne, a one-of-a-kind family-owned Italian restaurant located right in the heart of St. Armands Circle. We were served some lovely mimosas upon arrival. Then, we sampled the Bruschetta appetizer and the Ravioli di Ricotta e Spinaci entree. Both were spectacular, and are sure to leave you eager to revisit just to sample even more menu items.

Next, we made our way to the historic Columbia Restaurant. With multiple locations spanning across Central Florida, Columbia’s flagship Ybor City location is actually the oldest restaurant in the entire state of Florida. It opened in 1905, and ownership has remained in the same family for its entire 115-year history. We’ve visited Columbia Restaurant locations in Tampa and St. Augustine previously, so our expectations were already high. Luckily, Sarasota’s Columbia Restaurant did not disappoint. We enjoyed The Original Cuban Sandwich (a classic) and Columbia’s Original ‘1905’ Salad, which is always delicious.

Next up was The Ancient Olive, a gourmet olive oil shop that we were pleasantly surprised by. This hidden gem offers a range of homemade olive oils and balsamic vinegars, as well as ready-to-cook packages of pre-seasoned pastas, soups and more. There are even some decadent wines to choose from, in addition to a ton of kitchen staples throughout the shop.

As part of the food tour, we were taught how to properly taste the olive oils, and given free range to sample pretty much anything in the store. The Ancient Olive isn’t a stop I would typically make while on vacation, but it ended up being one of our favorite spots on the entire trip.

We couldn’t help but walk away with some wine and pastas of our own.

After that, we arrived at Blu Kouzina to taste some authentically delicious Greek food. The restaurant served us sampler plates of all of their most popular menu items, including keftedes (meatballs), kabobs, dolmades (vine leaves) and baklava, with a Greek cider to finish us off. It was the perfect way to taste multiple Blu Kouzina dishes, all of which were exquisite.

Then, we made a stop at The Spice & Tea Exchange, which turned out to be yet another wonderful hidden gem in St. Armands Circle. The walls of this shop were lined with spice blends and an assortment of fine teas, all crafted in-house. You can purchase individual blends, but the shop can also prepare any tea of your choosing either hot and iced.

Being tea lovers, we couldn’t pass. We went with the Blueberry Black Tea and the Mango Tango Herbal Tea. The Mango Tango was the perfect refresher on a warm Sarasota day, almost like a light juice. The Blueberry Black Tea was also tasty, the blueberry adding a subtle sweetness that isn’t at all overbearing.

Overall, The Spice & Tea Exchange is a great find that we highly recommend stopping by, whether you’re a fan of teas, spices or both.

We ended our food tour at Gelato-Go, for some decadent homemade gelato. We ordered the Creme Caramel flavor which comprised of rich caramel-flavored gelato with creamy caramel swirls. Without exaggeration, it was the best gelato we’ve ever had. We highly recommend stopping by Gelato-Go if you’re ever near St. Armands. You won’t regret it.

The food tour lasted a total of three hours.

Once it was complete, we decided to stroll around beautiful St. Armands Circle, taking advantage of the warm, coastal weather.

Speaks Clam Bar – Dinner

Later that evening, we had dinner at Speaks Clam Bar, a St. Armands staple. Speaks has the ambiance of an old-fashioned speakeasy. To our surprise, the date of our visit was actually the anniversary of the end of Prohibition. To celebrate, all Speaks employees were decked out in flapper dresses. The environment was electric.

We ordered the Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (left) which was made of gin, elderflower, agave nectar, lemon and pressed blackberries, and The Speaks Old Fashioned Cocktail (right) made with bourbon, sugar, bitters, orange & lemon essence and candied cherries.

For starters, we ordered 1/2 dozen Raw Oysters and 1/2 dozen Oysters Rockefeller. As expected, both were delectable.

For our entree, we enjoyed the Parmesan Crusted Grouper, which was served with a side of lemon, garlic mashed potatoes and broccolini. We were really impressed by this dish, especially the caper cream sauce garnishing the grouper.

For dessert, you can choose from a variety of parfait-like dessert shots, with flavors such as key lime pie, tiramisu, strawberry shortcake and more. We went with the tiramisu, and were extremely delighted with it. This little dessert shot was both sweet and light, the ideal way to end a dinner without making yourself feel overly full.

Sticking with the 1920’s speakeasy theme, the receipt is presented in a themed antique-like door that opens to a pair of peaking eyes.

Sunday

99 Bottles Taproom & Bottle Shop

While on vacation, Sunday morning brunch is a must. We brunched at 99 Bottles Taproom & Bottle Shop, where we had the opportunity to try some of the most delicious bagels. If you’re looking for an early morning bite but you’re a little crunched for time, 99 Bottles is the perfect spot to try.

We ordered an everything bagel with green onion cream cheese and tomato, as well as a cinnamon raisin bagel topped with cream cheese, smoked salmon, tomato, red onion and cucumber.

The Ringling Musuem

A surprising highlight of our trip was the The Ringling Museum. The grounds are home to a fantastic Museum of Art, an educational Circus Museum, the Ringling Ca’ d’Zan Mansion and many beautiful outdoor spaces.

The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art surrounds a grand courtyard filled with sculptures and fountains. This outdoor space is breathtakingly peaceful.

John and Mable Ringling were avid collectors of art, and this museum is their legacy. The collection is impressive, including pieces from the Late Medieval thorough the 19th century, as well as Greek, Roman and Cypriot antiquities that Ringling purchased from the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Circus Museum tells the origin story of the circus in 19th century America. You can view some authentic circus costumes and equipment, as well as pieces owned by other circus legends such as P.T. Barnum.

The Howard Bros. Circus model is made up of over 44,000 pieces. It provides a glimpse into just how much work went into these circuses that traveled across the country by train.

Entry into to the Ringling Ca’ d’Zan Mansion is not included in the original price of admission, but for an additional $10 per person you can explore John Ringling’s historic estate.

Marina Jack II’s Sunset Dinner Tour

Sunday night, we enjoyed our dinner from a lovely dinner cruise. The beautiful Marina Jack II’s sunset dinner tour takes passengers along the Gulf of Mexico to experience some really special views. It’s priced at $58.95 per person, which includes the boat ride and a three course meal. Marina Jack II also offers a sightseeing daytime lunch cruise for $38.95.

During our dinner cruise, we enjoyed some tasty rolls and garden salads with vinaigrette as starters.

The main course consisted of peppercorn crusted prime rib, grilled salmon with saffron cream sauce, roasted vegetables and cheesy potatoes.

Finally for dessert, we enjoyed key lime pie and raspberry almond cake (there was also an option of double fudge chocolate cake).

Overall, this is a wonderful option if you’re visiting Sarasota for a special occasion, or are looking for the perfect way to spend a romantic evening. The views from the ship are beautiful, and the experience is very intimate.

Monday

After checking out of our hotel, we grabbed a quick coffee and prepared for some more exciting Sarasota attractions.

Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

A must-visit on any trip to Sarasota is the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Not only are the grounds beautiful, but they are also filled with some impressive history. Marie Selby was a trailblazer in the fields of horticulture and botany. In an industry largely dominated by men, Selby provided the opportunity for women to work and learn about plants. Today, this legacy remains strong. This is also the world’s only botanical garden dedicated to to the display and study of wonderful tropical plants like bromeliads, epiphytic orchids and gesneriads.

Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquariam

For any animal lovers, we also highly recommend stopping by the Mote Marine Laboratory & Aquarium. This independent, nonprofit marine research institution is focused on conservation and sustainability. Mote uses science to educate the public on issues ranging from the impact humans have on the environment to human cancer studies using marine models. It’s educational, but it’s also a lot fun.

Mote is currently working to rehabilitate a number of sea turtles, with the hopes of returning them back to the wild to live out the rest of their days.

You can also observe other marine animals like sharks, jellyfish, otters and the adorable Axolotl (pictured above).

Mote is a great experience for families, providing educational opportunities for both kids and adults alike.

Sarasota certainly has a lot of unexpectedly incredible food to offer, in addition to its many cultural attractions and experiences.

Orange County May Fine Businesses Up to $5000 a day for Violations, plus Rapid Testing Updates

0

According to reporting by the Orlando Sentinel, Orange businesses could face fines up to $5,000 a day for ignoring COVID protocols if a new executive order is signed this Friday, December 4th, 2020.

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, frustrated by bars and other businesses ignoring protocols to slow the spread of the coronavirus, could slap non-compliant establishments with $500 fines that could increase to $5,000 a day, according to a draft of an executive order he is considering.

If the mayor approves the order on Friday, the fines could begin as early as Sunday for businesses that don’t enforce social distancing, fail to require employees to wear masks or break other rules.

Penalties outlined in the four-page draft include $500 for citations issued by police or code enforcement officers and fines of up to $1,000 a day imposed by a special magistrate for first violations and up to $5,000 a day for repeat offenders. If the magistrate determines the violation to be “irreparable or irreversible in nature” the fine can increase to $15,000, according to the document. Some legal experts expect non-compliant businesses to sue, challenging the mayor’s legal authority. Gov. Ron DeSantis in September prohibited cities and counties from fining individuals for refusing to wear masks or social distance, but the governor’s order did not explicitly prohibit fining businesses.

A county spokeswoman said the mayor would not be available to answer questions about the draft order until Friday afternoon. Read more at the Orlando Sentinel.

Clearing Up Confusion about Types of COVID-19 Testing

Two kinds of tests are available for COVID-19: viral tests (diagnostic tests) and antibody tests.

  • A viral test tells you if you have a current infection.
  • An antibody test might tell you if you had a past infection.

DIAGNOSTIC TESTS

A diagnostic test can show if you have an active coronavirus infection and should take steps to quarantine or isolate yourself from others. Currently there are two types of diagnostic tests – molecular tests and antigen tests. Both of these tests are currently available for free at Orange County Health Services.

Molecular Tests

Molecular tests, such as RT-PCR tests, detect the virus’s genetic material. PCR tests are considered the most accurate and “gold standard” for diagnosing active coronavirus infection. This test is typically highly accurate and usually does not need to be repeated.

Most PCR tests use a nasopharyngeal swab, which goes deep into your nose to the back of your throat.

Other things to note:

  • Results may take 2-3 days or up to a week (longer in some locations with many tests) to be returned.
  • If you need to travel out of the country or for any other purpose, a molecular test may be required.

Antigen Tests

Antigen tests detect specific proteins from the virus. Most antigen tests use a nasal or nasopharyngeal swab. Results may be returned very quickly (15-30 minutes), depending on the test. Because of this, antigen tests are in high public demand.

Antigen tests are intended for use on symptomatic persons within the first 5-12 days of symptom onset.

Positive results are usually highly accurate, but false positives can happen. Negative results may need to be confirmed with a molecular test. Antigen tests are more likely to miss an active COVID-19 infection compared to molecular tests.

Other things to note:

  • If your antigen test shows a negative result but you have symptoms of COVID-19 and/or have been at-risk for exposure to COVID-19, you should receive a PCR test to ensure accuracy.
  • Prior to an outpatient procedure, hospitals may conduct a rapid test first and confirm that rapid test with a PCR test to ensure accuracy.

ANTIBODY TESTS (AKA Serology Test or Blood Test)

Antibody tests check your blood by looking for antibodies, which can tell you if you had a past infection with the virus that causes COVID-19, regardless of whether you ever showed symptoms. These tests generally produce results in a few minutes based on a drop of blood taken from the finger; some tests may take 1-3 days if blood is drawn for testing. Locally, OneBlood is testing all blood donations for the COVID-19 antibodies.

Antibody tests can provide quick results but should not be used to diagnose someone with an active infection. It can take days to several weeks to develop enough antibodies to be detected in a test.

Whether you test positive or negative for COVID-19 on a viral or an antibody test, you still should take steps to protect yourself and others.

We do not know how much protection (immunity) antibodies to the virus might provide against getting infected again, so you should continue to take steps to protect yourself and others.

Free Testing Resources

Both molecular (PCR) and rapid antigen tests are now being administered at the Orange County Government Health Services testing site. For more information on this free testing site and which test may be the best choice for you, visit ocfl.net/Testing and click on #1 on the testing map.

Rodizio Grill at Pointe Orlando Re-Opens this Friday December 4th

0

Rodizio Grill opened at Pointe Orlando January 31st and was open for a few short months before all restaurants were required to close mid-March. The restaurant reopened early May but re-closed after a few weeks due to the immense decrease of visitors and conventioneers to the area.

Rodizio Grill’s ownership and management is thrilled to be reopening December 4th and can’t wait to welcome back the local community.

Established in 1995, Rodizio Grill was the first Brazilian “churrasco” steakhouse in the United States.

Twenty-five years later, the brand remains known for its playful Brazilian spirit, authentic menu offerings and family-friendly atmosphere.

Guest favorites include Picanha (top sirloin), Maminha (tri-tip sirloin), Frango Agri-Doce (sweet and spicy chicken), Linguiça (Brazilian pork sausage) and Abacaxi (glazed pineapple).

While the meats are the main attraction, they are complemented with an award-winning gourmet salad bar, marked by original salads, fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables, and authentic hot side dishes like Feijoada (Brazilian black bean stew) and Pão de Queijo (homemade Brazilian cheese bread).

Rodizio Grill’s reputation hinges on its unparalleled selection of real, fresh-pressed juices, homemade Brazilian Limeades, signature cocktails and an extensive wine list featuring a variety of Brazilian imported wine and beer.

At the end of the meal, guests can enjoy a selection of exclusive, homemade Brazilian desserts. The whole experience comes at a competitive, affordable price so the whole family can celebrate together.

The “Full Rodizio” Dinner includes unlimited Brazilian sides, gourmet salads and rotisserie-grilled meats carved tableside. The “Salad Bar Only” option includes unlimited Brazilian sides and gourmet salads. The Full Rodizio dinner is $42.99; Salad Bar Only dinner is $26.99. Kadence to open new Filipino restaurant, Kaya, at former Dandelion Communitea Cafe Location in Orlando’s Mills 50 District

0

Filipino food and culture have always been a part of Kadence’s story. In an e-mail this morning, Kadence sent out news about their upcoming new project, Kaya, a Filipino restaurant at the former Dandelion Communitea Cafe location in Orlando, Florida.

“Our first event in Orlando (even before Kappo!) was a 2013 Typhoon Haiyan relief fundraiser that featured a Filipino tasting menu, and y’all have rocked with us through the years at our backyard bbqs, kamayan feasts, and underground dinner parties. We can’t wait to take it to the next level through Kaya.” said the release.

SONY DSC

“We’ll be cooking the food closest to our hearts while infusing our experiences, memories and creativity to continue expanding awareness and love of Filipino food. More casual than Kadence – and more seats, too – we hope Kaya becomes a neighborhood restaurant, a place to gather as much as a place to celebrate a special occasion.”

The project will be led by Lo and Jami, along with their longtime friends Johnny and Jimmy Tung, while Mark and Jen continue to focus on Kadence.

“It’s full circle for our crew as we (and a slew of other local food industry folks) met through the Filipino Student Association at the University of Florida almost 20 years ago (GO Gators!). It’s no surprise our vision for Kaya includes nourishing a sense of community as much as cooking beautiful, soulful food,” says Jami Bailey of the Kaya team.

The restaurant will be located at 618 N Thornton Ave in the space previously occupied by Dandelion Communitea Cafe, and they hope to open late summer/early fall 2021.

“We couldn’t be more excited by this opportunity to contribute to the growing Filipino food scene in Central Florida. We’ll share more details over the next few months, so stay tuned to our IG accounts @kaya.orlando and @kadenceorlando for the latest”

Pompeii’s Table: Sublime and Ancient Food That Survived Vesuvius’ Fury

0

In support of the Orlando Science Center exhibition, Pompeii: The Immortal City, which opens October 26, eight Artistic Partners across Orlando were commissioned to imagine the sights, sounds, words and, in this case, the foods of ancient Italy.

Pompeii’s Table: Sublime and Ancient Food That Survived Vesuvius’ Fury, a series of events celebrating the powerful food legacy of ancient Italy, was conceived by freelance writer, food writer and playwright, Joseph Reed Hayes. He posed the following questions: What do we know about the food of Pompeii, what did the Pompeiians eat, how did they eat it, and what can we take from that inspiration to go Ancient Roman wild?

A baker’s dozen of Orlando’s most inventive chefs, culinarians and creative artists joined the Pompeii’s Table project to help answer those questions. Through six culinary and artistic events they will explore the history and food of Pompeiian kitchens. Challenging the chefs to work solely with ingredients available at the time, each dining experience is an experiment in creativity.

Chefs who operate in a world that equates Italian food with tomatoes, peppers, or eggplant, must build menus without those new-world foods, unavailable to Pompeiian cooks.

But seafood, goat, quail, game, cheese, fermented fish sauce, olive oil, wines, and a world encyclopedia of spices—very much yes. Plus, the odd cheesecake, jelly donut, fried chicken, and hamburgers, all of which appeared on Pompeiian plates.

Hayes pored through ancient written records and visual evidence to discover the actual ingredients and recipes of Pompeii, creating a list to inspire the chefs in their leap from the 1 st century to the 21 st .

Some of the recipes have traveled well through the centuries to become what we recognize as Italian food; others, such as stuffed dormice, lark’s tongues, and haunch of giraffe, less so.

Pompeii’s Table’s six events begin November 11, 2020, with the final dinner on January 19, 2021. Tickets for all Pompeii’s Table events will be available at pompeiistable.com or facebook.com/PompeiisTable. Pompeii: The Immortal City, the exhibition at the Orlando Science Center, opens October 26, and runs through January 24, 2021; tickets available at osc.com/pompeii.

Easy Thanksgiving Dishes and Sauces 2020 at Southeast Steel Appliance Warehouse Orlando

0

Ready for the Thanksgiving holiday? Here are a few easy recipes to go with your turkey this holiday season. For all your appliance needs, check out Southeast Steel Appliance Warehouse (www.southeaststeel.net) who celebrated 80 years in Orlando this year.

Turkey Skewers by Edible Orlando’s Kendra Lott

These fun turkey skewers are perfect for smaller (and safer) holiday gatherings. They’re the centerpiece pof our Simple Holiday Feast for Four by Chef Jes Tantalo. Feel free to use a pre-boned turkey breast (or even chicken if your party is a tiny one), or get tips on boning your bird from EO’s Kendra Lott in this video.

Ours browned up nicely on the My Hibachi Grill from Southeast Steel to cook our skewers, but they work just great on a regular gas or charcoal grill, too.

Click here to see Edible Orlando’s menu game plan; for more inspiration, visit their  recipe archives.

Serves 4 to 6

4-5 pound bone-in turkey breast

24 bamboo or reusable metal skewers

1/4 cup grapeseed oil

If using bamboo skewers, soak in water warm water for 10 minutes. Remove skin from breast in one piece if possible.

In a small saucepan, cover turkey skin with cold water, bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer and cook over medium heat for 15 minutes. Drain, divide into 4 equal lengthwise slices and set aside.

Meanwhile, using the tip of a chef’s knife or paring knife and working away from the bone, remove the breast meat from one side of the large bone in the center. Cut the large

“tender” from the bottom of the breast, remove the white tendon running down the middle and cut lengthwise into two pieces. Cut the remaining breast meat into slices the same width as the slices of ten-der. Repeat with other breast. (Reserve bones for stock.)

Thread each piece of turkey or turkey skin onto a skewer and place on sheet tray (you should have 20-24 skewers). Brush evenly with oil, and place on hot grill or flattop with plenty of space between and ends of skewers away from direct heat. Grill 20 to 25 minutes, or until browned and cooked through, flipping and rotating for even browning.

Remove to a platter and serve immediately with individual bowls of Florida Citrus Salt and Florida Cranberry Glaze. (The Maple Mustard Dressing from the cabbage is delicious on the turkey, too.)

New Opening: Lineage Cafe and Bakery in East Orlando / UCF Area

0

Lineage Coffee Roasting, has now added a third location to their lineup with a new location in East Orlando near UCF, adding to their East End Market and Mills 50 Location. The new cafe and bakery takes over the space once home to Jimmy Hula’s.

New with this larger location is a drive-thru, more open-air seating, and in-house bakery where they bake their own pastries and croissants.

Lineage roasts their own coffee and sources beans from Guatemala, Colombia, Kenya, and Brazil.

We spoke with Jarrett Johnson, founder/ head of coffee sourcing for Lineage about the recent opening of their new bakery and café out by UCF.

About the New Shop’s Design

The design of this new shop was really focused on bringing some clean airy space to the UCF area. We felt pretty strongly this area needed a Cafe with elegant design reminiscent of the Scandinavian influence felt at our other shops. This shop was designed by Justine Johnson(my wife) who was mainly focused on creating a cozy space that is still beautiful and had a wide variety of seating areas and nooks, so whether you were looking to study by yourself or meet with a group there is a space for you.

We feel pretty strongly that if we can have a warm/ well designed space, that has incredible customer service, we can make any customer fall in love with what we do.

At the end of the day, the pastries, coffee, and place is all intended to make people feel special and happy.

About the New Bakery

“We have always wanted to have a bakery to supply our own cafés with the absolute best pastries! By baking our own pastries and roasting our own coffees we are able to have a little more control over the experience we give to our customers.”

“The bakery is run by our business partner Ryan Wilcox who has fully dove headfirst into French pastry. His attention to detail is evident in the level of laminated dough we are serving! He has been working 14 hour days to make sure that everything that comes out of our bakery meets his quality standards and we are very proud of this.”

Upcoming Plans for Lineage Coffee

By beginning of the new year, we plan to be baking and transporting our pastries to our own Lineage shops. as well as launching new items over the coming months.

Most Popular Items

Our fast as selling pastry is the mango lime croissant. Kind of like a super classy doughnut that has a housemaid mango lime cream filling and a glaze on the outside.

Our most popular coffee drink is probably the iced honey latte. It’s made with a double shot of espresso/milk/housemaid Raw local honey simple syrup

First Look: US Marine Veteran Opens Island Fin Poke Franchise in Windermere

Island Fin Poke, a fast-casual chain that serves Hawaiian-style poke bowls in a comfortable laid back beach shack environment founded in Winter Springs in 2017, recently opened its fifth local restaurant at 4750 The Grove Dr, Windermere, FL 34786 in The Grove shopping center, located across from Feather & Quill.

Island Fin Poke provides guests with pole-to-bowl and farm-to-fork, locally and responsibly sourced ingredients for each individual to create their own perfect poke bowl.

With eight proteins, over 25 toppings, house-made sauces and specialty mix-ins, the endless possibilities allow guests to get creative and try something new every visit.

Spicy Tuna Bowl – one of the most popular menu items

Windermere franchise owner Tommy Ramjattan, originally from the Caribbean island of Trinidad, lived in the states for several years before joining the U.S. Marine Corps. During his four years of service, Ramjattan’s high test scores had earned him the envied title of marine firefighter and aircraft rescue specialist. After serving active duty, Ramjattan continued as a marine reservist until 2014, while also serving on the NYC police force, where he became a dedicated sergeant until his retirement in 2016.

Having time for a Florida vacation, Ramjattan realized a relocation out of the city and back to warmer climates was exactly the change he needed. A few months after his visit, he and his wife Grace, and their two children, moved to Orlando, Florida, with plans to look into a franchise to build together.

The Ramjattans had established several key objectives during their franchise search. The business had to work for them, not the other way around. It had to offer a product or service they believed in, and there had to be time left to enjoy life. Having met all of their requirements, Island Fin Poké came in first place.

The Ramjattans took a hard pass on pizza and burger joints for this healthy, Hawaiian style poké franchise, and had an November 2020 grand opening in Windermere, Florida.

The Ramjattans boast about Island Fin Poké’s healthy menu options and sustainable sourcing that makes everyone feel good. Ramjattan states, “It actually compliments you a little more when you believe in what you are doing, and you like the product you are selling.”

Ramjattan was also impressed with the simplicity and straightforward, no-cook business model Mark Setterington, president and CEO of Island Fin Poké, has created.

President and CEO of Island Fin Poké, Mark Setterington and his daughter Taylor helping out on the line of the Windermere store

Ramjattan’s marine-taught foundation of discipline, hard work, improvising, adapting, and overcoming, will serve their Island Fin Poké customers well.

The Marine Corps built his character and self-confidence and taught him how to look at everything with a unique perspective and appreciation. Ramjattan will always remember the things he learned from day one in the Marine Corps.  Island Fin Poke is proud to provide a military and service member discount at any location at anytime.

Every guest at Island Fin Poke is treated like family, ‘Ohana!

STUBBORN SODA is made with natural flavors and without High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS), artificial sweeteners, and Azo Dyes.

And as a reward for all that healthy eating, you should finish your meal with a delicious and refreshing cup of Dole Whip.

They are SO yummy.

The new Windermere location comes at a time when Island Fin Poké continues to rapidly expand its national footprint.  In addition to its open restaurants, Island Fin Poke has 25 locations in various stages of development across the country.

Vietnamese 3D Jelly Flower Cakes at Paris Banh Mi Bakery in Orlando’s Mills 50 District

Paris Banh Mi in Orlando’s Mills 50 District is a French-Vietnamese bakery probably most known for their Vietnamese banh mi sandwiches. I love the patechoux pork patty meat pies they have near the checkout counter, too.

But on a recent visit, I came across their new gorgeous 3D jelly flower cake selection ($7) of which I immediately had to try.

Similar to a rain drop cake, these flower jelly cakes are shaped like a translucent dome with a flower encased within the gelatinous bubble.

To start, they use agar-agar gelatin (derived from seaweed) to produce the jelly-like consistency, and the flowers are created from a mixture of coconut cream and milk. The dish, originally from Japan, is called thach rau cau in Vietnamese. The flavors are light and come with a base jello layer that ranges from mocha to chocolate.

World’s Largest Free-Standing White Castle Officially Breaks Ground in Orlando, Set to Open Spring 2021

0

You may recall a few years ago in 2015 when White Castle brought their Crave Mobile food truck to Fun Spot America – hundreds waited in lines, many more were turned away due to capacity, and at the end of the day more than 10,000 sliders were sold, according to White Castle. At the time, White Castle had no locations in Florida and the nearest was more than 600 miles away in Murfreesboro, Tenn. You could say there is a certain demand for the little slider burgers here in Central Florida.

Next spring, White Castle will finally return to Florida since opening their last White Castle in Miami in the 1960s.  Home to the “slider” and America’s first fast-food hamburger chain, the company officially broke ground and began construction this Thursday, November 19th on its Orlando location, the future home of what will be the largest free-standing White Castle in the world – and more griddles than any other Castle in the world.

The 4,567-square foot restaurant will include indoor and outdoor seating and two drive-through lanes. The new restaurant is expected to bring 120 new jobs to the area.

Located in southwest Orlando at 11595 Daryl Carter Parkway, at Unicorp’s $1 billion The Village at O-Town West mixed-use development and immersive entertainment complex, White Castle expects to open by Spring 2021.

Renderings show an eye-catching tower in a sleek, modern industrial-style architectural design.

Closing: Market on Magnolia in downtown Orlando to Close on November 25

0

Market on Magnolia announced on its Facebook page today that it will close in the coming week, with their last day on Wednesday, November 25th.

Per their facebook page, Market on Magnolia – “It’s with heavy hearts, and years of memories, that we have made the decision to close Market on Magnolia. Wednesday the 25th will be our last operating day. Come enjoy some great beers and food one last time in this location through the week! Happy hour starts Today at 2pm until closing day. Thanks for 12 great years (Forty 7 Clothing, Frank & Steins, Market on Magnolia)”

Owner Pete Downing tells us that the closing is a combination due to issues with the current environment in downtown Orlando as well as issues coming to agreement with the landlord.

Mr. Downing recently bought Wally’s and is also opening Gatlin Hall Brewing that will house Da Kine Poké. Gatlin Hall Brewery will be opening in the SODO area, with an award winning head brewer, promising to have great beer, a beer garden and three local food vendors inside the brewery.

Located at 150 S. Magnolia Ave. Orlando, FL 32801, Market On Magnolia is Downtown Orlando’s first mixed used food and beverage facility with a full bar featuring 40 draft beers, signature craft cocktails and wine, and also 3 food vendors: Da Kine Poke, Gnarly Barley, and 081 Wood Fired Pizzas. The market also featured sport 25 TV’s for all sports viewing and host a Sat and Sun brunch.

Inside Look: New Sunday Brunch at Russell’s on Lake Ivanhoe

Located in the historic Lake Ivanhoe district, Russell’s is a new casual fine dining restaurant & bar featuring an approachable yet high-end menu, all with a great lakeside view and atmosphere. They recently began serving an all-new Sunday brunch.

The restaurant’s theme was inspired by a business man named George Russell who moved to Florida in 1885 and made a living by selling pineapples off of Lake Ivanhoe’s shores.

Russell’s is currently complying to all CDC guidelines including daily temperature checks, extensive sanitation measures, and required face masks except when consuming food and beverages.

Brunch is every Sunday from 11am to 3pm and reservations are for 2 hours maximum.  We were recently invited to experience their new phenomenal Sunday brunch.

The Sunday Brunch Menu at Russell’s on Lake Ivanhoe

Here are Our Favorite Brunch Items at Russell’s on Lake Ivanhoe:

1. New England Lobster Rolls – $28

An American classic – creamy, meaty, and delicious. These three warm rolls are full of  seasoned chunky lobster salad, served with fries.

2. Filet Steak Tartare – $18

Hand cut beef tenderloin, crostini’s, tartare sauce – tender and flavorful, served with fries or side salad.

3. Seafood Platter – $65

Half Maine lobster, two stone crab claws, and pink gulf shrimps served on ice with a trio of sauces – Thousand Island, chipotle cocktail pineapple sauce, and melted butter.

Russell’s focuses on fresh, Florida and local sourcing so this plate was just brimming with succulent and mouth-watering seafood. Loved the stone crab claws – it is stone crab season by the way.

4. Roast of the Day – $28

The Roast of the Day on our visit was Roasted Pork & Chicken, a good hearty dish served with gravy, and vegetables – perfect for those cool fall temperatures that grace our region once in a while.  Served with a side of creamy fondue-like aligot potato, from the L’Aubrac region in the southern Massif Central of France.

Of course, no Sunday Brunch is complete with out a few refreshments to enjoy, including the …

5. Watermelon Basil Mocktail (non-alcoholic)

6. House-made Sangria

Be sure to stop by the next time at Russell’s on Lake Ivanhoe the next time you are in the Lake Ivanhoe area, for some great food and drinks in a relaxed vibe with a gorgeous waterfront view.

Chan’s Chinese Cuisine in Orlando’s Mills 50 District to Close After 24 years

0

Chan’s Chinese Cuisine opened in late 1995 in Orlando, and have now been open for over 24 years here in Orlando serving authentic Cantonese Chinese cuisine. The restaurant recently announced that their last day open will be this Friday 11/20/2020.

The restaurant posted this message on their Facebook on 11/15/2020:

Greetings to all customers and friends!

First, we would like to thank you for your continued loyalty and patronage of Chans Chinese Cuisine since its start of operation at 1901 E Colonial Drive in 1996.
We would like to inform you that since we have sold our property at 1901 E Colonial Drive to an investor who would redevelop and expand his business operation at this location, we are here to announce : our business will be operated until 11/20/2020 (Friday) up to lunch time.

We feel honor to witness the vibrant business growth of Orlando City, and, along the downtown East Colonial Drive area over these years. We have collected many precious memories from operating Chans Chinese Cuisine, meeting many friends, and establishing good relationship with our local communities. While it is sad to say goodbye, we look forward to having a new chapter of life and more time with our families.

Best Wishes From,

Chans Restaurant

Partners Tony Yeung and Annie Wong opened Chan’s Chinese Cuisine in late 1996 in Orlando, and have now been open for over 20 years here in Orlando serving authentic Cantonese Chinese cuisine. On June 5, 2017, the City of Orlando proclaimed it “Chan’s Chinese Cuisine Day” in honor of their anniversary.

Annie Wong’s uncle Chan opened Tom’s Chinese Cuisine in Daytona Beach many years ago. Annie, who operated her uncle’s restaurant, wanted to continue the success and opened an authentic Chinese cuisine in Orlando with Tony Yeung as a partner in 1996.

Chan’s Tony Yeung and Annie Wong

With over 45 years of experience, Chef Tony Yeung first started his chef career in Hong Kong at the very young age as 14. Prior to coming to Orlando, he worked as a managing chef in New York.

Special Roast Pork, Cucumber, and Dried Squid Appetizer
Special Roast Pork, Cucumber, and Dried Squid Appetizer

20 years ago when Annie and Tony founded Chan’s, they discovered that many customers did not know what authentic Chinese Cuisine consisted of, with many more knowing just the Americanized Chinese take-out version of the cuisine.

When they first opened, Tony and Annie had to explain and educate the customers about dim sum and authentic Chinese cuisine. Other challenges they faced including sourcing. Inside Look: Snack Swag – Orlando Bakery / Cakes / Pastry by Meiji May

My wife and I recently celebrated our 7th Wedding Anniversary and for that occasion, I called upon Snack Swag’s Meiji May to create a beautiful anti-gravity malteser cake that I knew my wife would just love with some coconut and raspberry filling. It turned out fantastic and absolutely beautiful.

You may have seen the fabulous cakes found by local Orlando bakery @snackswagorlando on Instagram.

Orlando based Meiji May is a fashion stylist/ graphic designer working in cake and all thing sweets under the name Snack Swag, known for their artfully crafted cakes and pastries.

Meiji was born and raised in Bangkok, Thailand – where she started her passion in food. She studied Art Advertising at Assumption University, Thailand, and after graduating applied her creative skills to creating her brand Snack Swag in 2014.

At the age of 28, she decided to come to the U.S. to support her husband, Jack Tawa, in his restaurant dream (it’s now Sea Thai and Tuun.)

She decided to complete 2 degrees at the same time; culinary management and baking & pastry management from Valencia College.

Meiji then combined her passion for baking and design to form, Snack Swag!, a yummy and pretty – high quality and crafted sweets inspired by Asian flavors and everything she loved when she was in her home country.

Seeking to bring people together over cakes and lifestyle, Snack Swag debuted in Summer of 2014 with the cartoon characters French macarons.

Since then, Snack Swag Has developed a thriving bespoke cake program, and created edible works of art to serve Orlando for all kinds of events and celebrations.

The most popular item at Snack Swag is the cookie cake. It can be made in any shape, numbers, letters, and any sizes.

The cookie cake is made with 2 layers of vanilla shortbread, hand cut then bake to golden brown and then filled with seasonal fruit filling and Italian meringue buttercream frosting and then I’ll freestyle decorating the cake to fit the requested theme and color tone so each one is pretty unique.

If they need any special request for the decoration, design, or topping, they are welcome to do it too… something like custom people face cookie, a puppy sugar fondant sculpture or personalized message over an imprinted fondant cookie.

It’s very fun way to create a unique dessert.

Snack Swag is now in the process of the online ordering testing. People will fill out the form online at https://form.jotform.com/202757824354056 and then they will get back to each inquiries in details later once they review the ordering form they submitted.

Local Orlando Thanksgiving Specials for 2020 – The MegaList

0

This year, Thanksgiving may look a little different due to the ongoing pandemic situation – as I write this on 11/13/2020, there appears to be a national uptick in cases. Hopefully Floridians have learned from past waves and continue to wear masks, socially distance, wash their hands thoroughly, and take great precautions. If we are able to keep cases low, we won’t have to have another lockdown type situation as what other countries and areas have done and will do.

Whether you are dining with your immediate family / quarantine pod or not this year, be safe – and…

Taverna Opa and Tapa Toro on I-Drive Extend Magical Dining 3-Course Menu till December 30th

Taverna Opa and Tapa Toro will be extending the 3 course menus as “Keep the Magic” at both brands through December 30th. Three-courses for $35 – with  $1 donation from each menu sold going to support local charity, One Heart for Women and Children.
Belly dancer Stephanie Gibson

Taverna Opa‘s Magical Dining menu offers authentic Greek cuisine with nightly belly dancing entertainment.  Guest can enjoy fine Greek cuisine in a festive atmosphere and dance alongside the belly dancers as a confetti of napkins surround you.  Everyone is encouraged to participate – the more the merrier!

Taverna Opa

Menu Highlights
Crispy Calamari – Crispy fried with lemon.
Lamb Chops (GF) – Marinated for 36-hours with fresh herbs and garlic, served with Lemon Potatoes and YiaYia’s vegetables.  I normally do not eat lamb but I actually enjoyed their lamb chops.  The taste was very similar to steak.  It was not gamey at all because they use domestic lamb which is the most expensive, high-quality lamb that is fed grass and corn.
Flaming Saganaki cheese

Tapa Toro

Menu Highlights

Seafood Paella and Steak and Frites

Seafood Paella, the quintessential Spanish rice dish, is expertly prepared with a very generous amount of fresh seafood, including: shrimp, mussels, calamari, clams, and chorizo. For the full signature Tapa Toro experience, I suggest sitting at their 12-seat paella pit from where you can watch the Flamenco dancers and enjoy your delicious meal.

Grilled Skirt Steak, Truffle Fries, and house-made Chimichurri

My dining companion ordered the Skirt Steak and Truffle Frites, an excellent cut for the grill and further enhanced by being cooked to at least medium, which we learned, allows for caramelization and tenderizing. The house-made Chimichurri offered the perfect balance by adding a touch of acidity and brightness to this powerhouse of a dish.

First Watch to Open New Flagship Restaurant in Winter Park

0

Since entering the market in 1993 with its first restaurant in Maitland, First Watch has built a loyal, passionate following throughout Greater Orlando, now serving up breakfast, brunch, and lunch with 20 locations in the Central Florida area.

First Watch’s 27-year-old Maitland location will move to a sleek and modern new 4,100-square-foot redesigned space in Winter Park in early 2021. This is the location at 140 Orlando Ave, Winter Park, FL 32789, formerly home to the Mario Lopez-owned Cinco Tacos (briefly) and Carmel Cafe before that, right across from Trader Joe’s. Construction is currently underway with this newest location to serve as First Watch’s new flagship restaurant, and yes they are getting rid of that big, ugly green grass wall.

The location was originally slated to open in summer of 2020, but then the coronavirus pandemic hit and everything went back to the drawing board for a new re-design, tailor-made for the new habits among restaurant patrons. The new modern design builds upon the “Urban Farm” design that was rolled out with the new builds in recent years.

First Watch’s off-premise business has increased by a multiple of five since the pandemic began, whereas before 2020, the brunch concept focused almost solely on the dine-in occasion.

The new Winter Park restaurant’s design will help First Watch deliver on convenience and elevate the takeout experience, becoming the first First Watch restaurant with a new, separate dedicated to go and delivery entrance.

In the kitchen, the new Winter Park restaurant will be First Watch’s first with two separate cook lines – one for regular dine in and one dedicated solely to takeout and delivery orders.

With that addition, the new restaurant is larger than First Watch’s typical footprint, coming in at more than 4,000 square feet, not including the outdoor dining and lounge area.

“One of the keys to our growth and success at First Watch has always been our focus on ensuring our relevance by staying ahead of long-term consumer trends. We use that information to evolve and elevate the First Watch experience, whether it’s with new technology, our restaurant footprint and décor, new menu options or our service philosophies,” said Chris Tomasso, president and CEO of First Watch. “That evolution for us was fast-tracked during 2020, and we used this opportunity to think outside the box and offer an even more enjoyable experience for our customers, whether they choose to dine in our restaurant or take brunch home. Since we opened here nearly 30 years ago, Orlando has proven to be a fantastic home for First Watch, and we cannot wait to introduce this elevated experience to our friends in the Winter Park community.”

Customers are also looking for more outdoor dining, and the new design has an expanded outdoor patio design with an inside / outside open air bar and lounge, perfect for enjoying mimosas with that Avocado Toast or Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict.

The patio is also north facing patio to reduce exposure to the intense Florida sun, and an extended hard cover to protect diners from the ever present potential of rain in Central Florida.

The new flagship prototype restaurant will also offer First Watch’s crafted cocktail program that’s currently available locally only in its Waterford Lakes restaurant. Popular unique alcoholic brunch cocktails include Vodka and Kale Tonic – a variation of the restaurant’s popular Kale Tonic drink featuring gluten-free vodka. Classic brunch cocktails like Mimosas and a Million Dollar Bacon Bloody Mary are also available.

In addition to its cocktail offerings, First Watch’s elevated beverage program includes the restaurant’s Project Sunrise coffee, grown by an independent group of female farmers in Huila, Colombia, called Mujeres en Café.

The new restaurant will also offer options from First Watch’s Juice Bar – including the best-selling Kale Tonic and Morning Meditation – juiced in-house daily using only the highest quality fruits and vegetables.

The new flagship prototype restaurant is expected to open in Winter Park this coming March 2021. In the mean time, you can visit any of First Watch’s 20 locations in Central Florida, serving its entire menu seven days a week from 7 a.m. until 2:30 p.m for dine-in or take-out.

5. The BOATHOUSE at Disney Springs

The BOATHOUSE might just be one of our all-time favorite restaurants at Disney Springs, and that’s partly because of its unmatched outdoor seating. Guests can enjoy their meals and watch the vintage Amphicars drive past from the sizable water-front dock. At the BOATHOUSE, you can’t beat a great view.

Enzian Theater is Central Florida’s only alternative cinema, offering classic, foreign and independent film screenings. 7. Capa Steakhouse & Bar at Four Seasons Orlando

Capa is a rooftop steakhouse and bar located at Four Seasons Orlando. As you can expect, the food is delectable, but perhaps even more impressive is the view from this restaurant. It seems to overlook the entire city of Orlando, and if you look close enough you can actually spot some iconic theme park landmarks like EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth. Our favorite time to enjoy the views from Capa’s outdoor terrace and dining area is just around sunset.

Most of the restaurants throughout Universal’s CityWalk feature outdoor seating, but one of our top picks is The CowFish. Southeast Steel Celebrates 80 Years in Orlando this Nov 11-14

0

This week, Southeast Steel Appliance Warehouse celebrates 80 years in Orlando with a special 80th anniversary sale.

“We are honored to have been part of the Central Florida community for 80 years” says Stu Kimball, President of Southeast Steel Appliance Warehouse.

Founder Irving Lippton, Stu’s Father-In-Law, established Southeast Steel in 1940, providing Central Floridians with various types of hardware, home supplies, and whatever consumer appliances that were available at the beginning of WWII.

Driven by consumer needs ever since, they have continued to thrive in the appliance arena and today are known as locally as the “Appliance Experts.”

Kimball continues… “We know that selecting what’s right for you, your family and lifestyle can be a daunting task. Our staff’s product knowledge distinguishes us from all our competitions.

In their past, most of them actually worked for manufacturers directly, so they know the products thoroughly and are able to educate and guide customers in finding products that best fit their particular needs, budget and lifestyle.

“We have very little staff turnover, with most of our staff having been here for over 18 years. Many have even served two generations of family members!”

“We never forget that it’s our personalized customer service and highly experienced sales team that keeps these families generationally loyal to us. In today’s retail environment, shoppers are armed with more knowledge and expectations than ever before. They want every different feature and benefit explained to them on each model so they can make the wisest purchasing decision. This personalized experience won’t be found at the big box stores.” says Kimball. He and his entire team take pride in saying “We sell appliances, and ONLY appliances!”

“We are truly excited to host our 80th Anniversary Sale November 11 – 14th and invite all former customers to stop in and see the exciting new models, even if they’re not currently in the market for a new appliance. “Everyone who does will even receive a thank you gift!”
