First Look: First Watch releases new menu items for the spring

Change is in the air – from fall to spring, the seasons are changing and so is the seasonal menu at First Watch.

First Watch, the popular daytime café serving breakfast, brunch and lunch daily from 7am – 2:30pm has officially released their new seasonal menu and we were invited to experience and savor their spring flavors.

New on the spring menu are the following yummy items:

1. Shrimp & Grits

Their take on this Lowcountry classic features sautéed shrimp and Cajun andouille sausage reduced with chicken stock, house-roasted tomatoes, onions, green peppers and scallions, and served over Bob’s Red Mill Cheddar Parmesan cheese grits, with artisan ciabatta toast.

2. Pork Carnitas Omelet

Savory pork carnitas, house-roasted onions, fresh avocado, Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses. Topped with tomatillo hollandaise, chive cream, Cotija cheese, pico de gallo and fresh cilantro. Served with a side of black beans.

3. Loaded Smoked Salmon Bagel

A toasted NY everything bagel (made in da’ Bronx) topped with scallion cream cheese, sliced cucumber, tomato, Wild Alaska Smoked Sockeye Salmon, house-pickled red onions and lemon dressed arugula. Served with a side of fresh fruit.

4. Golden Glow Juice

Pineapple, turmeric, orange, coconut water and lemon.

Also pictured:
(M) Kale Tonic – Kale, Fuji apple, cucumber and lemon.
(R) Morning Meditation – Orange, lemon, turmeric, organic ginger, agave nectar and beet.

My favorite was the Loaded Smoked Salmon Bagel!  The toasted NY everything bagel (made in da’ Bronx) was perfection and the smoked salmon topped with scallion cream cheese, sliced cucumber, tomato, Wild Alaska Smoked Sockeye Salmon, house-pickled red onions and lemon dressed arugula took everything to the next level.  Each bite was delicious and bursting with flavor!

Of course, there are still old favorites on the menu available for take out or dine in at First Watch, including:

Tri-Fecta

Two fresh cage-free eggs any style, we chose scrambled, with either a light and airy Belgian waffle or a multigrain pancake. Plus your choice of bacon, savory chicken sausage patty, turkey or pork sausage link.

Floridian French Toast

Thick-cut brioche with wheat germ and powdered cinnamon sugar, covered with fresh banana, kiwi and seasonal berries.

A.M. Superfoods Bowl

Coconut milk chia seed pudding with fresh bananas, berries, blackberry preserves and housemade granola. Served with whole grain artisan toast topped with almond butter and Maldon sea salt.Coconut milk chia seed pudding with fresh bananas, berries, blackberry preserves and housemade granola. 9 of the Best Women-Owned Restaurants in Orlando for 2021

March is Women’s History Month, where we celebrate the incredible contributions women have made throughout history. In honor of the occasion, we are shining a spotlight on some of the best women-owned restaurants in Orlando for 2021.

9 of the Best Women-Owned Restaurants in Orlando for 2021

1. Tabla Indian Restaurant, Nora Jain

Tabla Indian Restaurant serves up some of the best Indian, Thai and Chinese dishes in all of Central Florida. Nora Jain owns Tabla, which has one location in Orlando and one in Winter Park.

“I believe being a woman, we add a fine touch to our industry,” said Nora Jain. “We are driven by passion so we bring perfection and creativity to our dishes. I have had a very comfortable learning curve because I feel most of the chefs are like artists so as long as I understood their vision they are very cooperative with the menu side of things. However, the difficulty I faced was more with operations. Being a lady I feel they do not want to listen and follow instructions related to day-to-day working style. Over the years, I feel I have earned enough confidence from my team that they know that it only makes their life easy if they follow a system. Now they do listen and follow the processes built into our day-to-day operation.”

“Advice for my fellow friends wanting to join culinary will be to know your food, follow your passion, follow your dreams and never ever give up.”

2. Tapa Toro and Taverna Opa Orlando, Katerina Coumbaros

Katerina Coumbaros is the owner of Tapa Toro and Taverna Opa Orlando, two restaurants with unique and delicious menus. Tapa Toro focuses on traditional Spanish food from paellas to tapas, while Taverna Opa offers a variety of Greek eats.

“Traditionally, women have held the position of “chef” at home, but there is a huge discrepancy within the professional world,” said Coumbaros. “In restaurants around the world, men oftentimes dominate, but I’m committed to changing this narrative. As a restauranteur, I consider it my responsibility to serve as a role model for the women I encounter to show that they can own restaurants, run kitchens — and do it well. I’m hopeful for the year ahead and the continued impact we can collectively make to inspire the women of today and tomorrow in the culinary industry. Cheers to progress!”

3. Pom Pom’s Teahouse & Sandwicheria, Pom Moongauklang

Pom Pom’s Teahouse & Sandwicheria is a lovely spot to enjoy an assortment of hand-crafted teas and sandwiches. Pom Moongauklang is the owner of the eatery located in Orlando’s Milk District.

“(A) challenge in my journey 25 years ago was being the only female executive chef while working at Lucky Cheng’s. At that time, it was very rare to have a female in that position. Then moving to Florida and opening Pom Pom’s Teahouse and Sandwicheria in the time before the food scene took off.”

Moongauklang also lists the lessons she’s learned in her role. “Do not get comfortable. Be prepared for anything. Navigate and pivot.”

4. Buttermilk Bakery, Taissa Rebroff

Taissa Rebroff owns Buttermilk Bakery, which is a quaint bake shop located in Winter Park offering freshly prepared baked goods. Whether you’re craving something sweet or savory, Buttermilk Bakery has got you covered. We recommend trying the Strawberry Almond Croissant, the Monkey Bread or the Morning Bun, but you’ll want to get there early because food items are made fresh daily and sell out often.

5. Se7en Bites, Trina Gregory-Propst

Trina Gregory-Propst is the owner of Se7en Bites, which is located right in the heart of Orlando’s Milk District. This restaurant features a unique menu of southern comfort food, breakfast and brunch favorites, coffee and homemade sweet treats.

6. DaJen Eats Cafe & Creamery, Jenn Ross

Jenn Ross owns DaJen Eats Cafe & Creamery, a quick-service vegan eatery offering traditional Jamaican favorites. Ross grew up in Jamaica, and cites her grandmother as the greatest influence in her life and her main culinary inspiration.

“She had lots of kids and so for most of her adult life cooked giant pots of food,” Ross told us. “When all the kids grew up and left home, she never adjusted. She kept right on cooking giant pots of food and would literally call strangers off the side of the road to eat. Her spirit of community has been such a huge influence to my approach to food, being a chef and running a restaurant. I feel food fosters community, right? Let’s get you to the table with a hot meal, and then solve the world’s problems. Differences in opinions are much easier to digest on a full stomach with a dining mate.”

7. The Whiskey, Katie Zagaroli

The Whiskey, owned by Katie Zagaroli, is located right off Sand Lake Road. The Whiskey offers an impressive menu full of gourmet burgers and whiskey-inspired craft cocktails. Some popular menu favorites include the Whiskey Burger, The Southerner, Sweet Potato Waffle Fries, Whiskey Chips and more.

“Starting a business is easy,” said Katie Zagaroli. “Keeping a business is the tricky part. It takes leadership, dedication, patience and… whiskey. Lots of whiskey.”

8. Loading Gastrobrunch, Jahnae Allen

Jahnae Allen is a co-owner Loading Gastrobrunch, located right outside of Orlando in St. Cloud, Florida. Loading Gastrobrunch features southern style breakfast and brunch dishes with a Spana-Flora flair. Some must-have menu items include any of their Omelettes, Pancakes and Avocado Toasts.

9. Tamale Co. Mexican Street Food, Jennifer Tamayo

Jennifer Tamayo owns Tamale Co. with her husband Fernando. The charming hole-in-the-wall is located in Hourglass Social House, and it serves up a variety of authentic Mexican street dishes. They’re known for their tamales, so those are a must-try. Other popular bites include the Elotes, Tacos and Churros.

Women continue to make impressive waves in the  culinary world, and we are excited to watch as the Orlando food scene continues to grow in both diversity and inclusion.

The Ultimate Foodie’s Guide to Historic St. Augustine, Florida: Our 4-Day Itinerary

St. Augustine is a city rich with history, culture and culinary adventure. Originally founded in 1565, St. Augustine really is America’s Oldest City.

Charming restaurants and celebrated architecture can be found all around the city, which continues to serve as a cultural mecca as it has for hundreds of years prior. The cultural and ethnic diversity of St. Augustine is made evident from the vast array of cuisine available at every turn. St. Augustine was recently named one of USA TODAY’s Readers’ Choice 2020 “Best Historic Small Towns” and lonelyplanet.com’s “Top U.S. Destinations with European Style.”  Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or an educational adventure, St. Augustine is a wonderful choice.

We were invited out by Florida’s Historic Coast to discover the city and enjoy the impressive array of food available. Here is The Ultimate Foodie’s Guide to Historic St. Augustine.

The Ultimate Foodie’s Guide to Historic St. Augustine, Florida: Our 4-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Check into the Edgewater Inn

St. Augustine is home to many quaint hotels filled with beauty and history. We stayed at the Edgewater Inn, which is a comfortable bed & breakfast located right on the water, and only steps away from St. Augustine’s historic downtown district. The Edgewater Inn only offers a handful of rooms, so we recommend making your reservation as far in advance as possible.

We stayed in a king room with waterfront views and a patio. The hotel room interior was clean, spacious and homey.

The highlight of staying at the Edgewater Inn is the spectacular view you can get right from the comfort of your room. A patio door in our room opened up to the clear blue water of the Matanzas River, with the Bridge of Lions and historic downtown area visible. The view alone is undoubtably worth a stay at this hotel.

We were provided with two rocking chairs to sit and enjoy the view with. Bamboo dividers offered privacy from neighboring hotel guests.

Despite being small, the Edgewater Inn has some impressive amenities. A pool is available if you need a quick dip after a long day or if you simply want to lounge under the sun.

After checking into the hotel and getting ourselves situated, it was time to begin exploring St. Augustine.

Free Wine Tasting at San Sebastian Winery

San Sebastian Winery was originally founded in 1996, and today serves as a historic and beloved staple in the city of St. Augustine. This winery offers free wine tastings every day of the week, with no reservations required. Due to COVID-19, our tasting looked a little different than usual, but it was still a great experience for any wine lover. There’s also a rooftop restaurant you can visit for even more food and wine samplings. Two of our favorites were the Cabernet Sauvignon and the Pinot Grigio.

Dinner at Kingfish Grill

Kingfish Grill is a lovely marina-front restaurant with a generous amount of outdoor seating. The menu is pretty extensive, featuring an assortment of fresh seafood and sushi dishes.

We started off with a Sauvignon Blanc and a beer.

As an appetizer, we enjoyed the Fried Clams. They were very similar to a calamari dish, and were equally as tasty.

For entrees, we ordered the Fish Tacos as well as the Cry No Mas roll and the Ultimate Spicy Tuna roll. All three were spectacular. The fish tacos were fresh and seasoned to perfection, and the sushi rolls featured flavors both unique and delicious.

For dessert, we enjoyed the Vanilla Bean Crème Brûlée and the Florida Key Lime Pie. The Crème Brûlée was phenomenal, and the key lime pie was both sweet and refreshing.

Kingfish Grill was a great dinner spot, with an impressive menu. During our visit, quite a few menu items were already sold out for the night so we recommend visiting earlier in the day if you can.

Day 2

Breakfast at the Inn

Another great amenity offered by the Edgewater Inn is the complimentary breakfast available seven days a week. Every morning, you can head to the dining room to enjoy a continental-style breakfast as well as some home-cooked additions which can be prepared fresh at your request. During our stay, we enjoyed the breakfast casserole made with egg, cheese, vegetables and ham.

Historic Red Express Tour

There are various historic tours you can take to learn a bit more about St. Augustine. We boarded the train for the Red Express Tour, where we learned all about the history of St. Augustine from the 1500’s to present day.

In the late 19th century, Henry Flagler (co-founder of Standard Oil) began leaving his significant impact on the city of St. Augustine. Upon arrival, he began building the Ponce de Leon Hotel. The hotel opened to the public on Jan. 10, 1888 with immediate success. It was one of the first buildings in the United States with electricity, even before the White House. Flagler was good friends with Thomas Edison, who installed the generators at the Ponce de Leon Hotel himself. When it opened, hotel guests were so unfamiliar with electricity and distrusting of light switches that children were hired to turn the lights on and off throughout the day.

The former Ponce de Leon Hotel is now home to Flagler College, pictured below.

Throughout the educational tour, we also passed by The Oldest House Museum and Gardens.

St. Augustine is famous for what are referred to as “love trees.” Pictured below, these trees form when two unique species of trees grow through one another. Legend says that if you kiss your loved one underneath a “love tree,” you will remain with that individual for the rest of your life. These particular love trees are located right in front of Bar Harbor Cheesecake Factory, which we stopped by later in the day.

The Red Express Tour lasted a little over one hour, and was a great way to quickly become familiar with the city.

Corks & Forks Strolling Tour with The Tasting Tours

The best way to experience a new city is through its food, and St. Augustine offers a number of unique food tours providing the opportunity to do just that. If you’re looking for a walking tour that covers the absolute best food and wine samplings St. Augustine has to offer, Corks & Forks Strolling Tour is the perfect choice. Hosted by The Tasting Tours, Corks & Forks combines delicious food and wine pairings with historical tidbits and educational opportunities along the way. Plus, it’s an excellent chance to make some new friends along the way.

The first stop on our Corks & Forks tour was Athena Restaurant. Athena is a family-owned Greek restaurant located right in the heart of St. Augustine. Their menu is full of authentic Greek cuisine and beverages, all of which are prepared fresh with care. If you’re a fan of Greek food, Athena is a St. Augustine must.

We were greeted with Kouros’ Agiorgitiko, a traditional Greek red wine.

We also sampled the Saganaki (flaming cheese) as well as some traditional Greek gyros. The wine and flaming cheese dish paired well together. After sipping the red wine, the flavor of the cheese seems to change before your own tastebuds.

Next on the tour was the Old City House Inn and Restaurant. Located within one of St. Augustine’s premier bed & breakfasts, this restaurant offers an outdoor dining experience that is both comfortable and elevated. We had the chance to sample a delicious Whitehaven Sauvignon Blanc, which was paired with a lovely grilled salmon dish.

The next stop was the Cafe Alcazar, an elegant eatery located inside the Lightner Museum, in a space which originally housed the largest indoor swimming pool of its time. The cafe is open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. only. During our visit, we sampled the Escargot Alcazar and the Sesame Shrimp, both of which were fantastic. The wine pairing was the Clifford Bay Sauvignon Blanc, which was equally as tasty.

Next on the tour was Casa de Vino 57. This spot, housed in a historic 1807 building, features a wide array of boutique wines. During our food and wine tour, we had the opportunity to sample three wines or draft beers of our choosing, while enjoying a lovely charcuterie board. Our favorite beer was the Lost Coast Brewery Tangerine Wheat Ale, and our favorite wine was the Sheep Creek Sauvignon Blanc (which we may have even purchased an additional bottle of).

Last and certainly not least on our tour was Bar Harbor Cheesecake Company. Originating in Maine, Bar Harbor Cheesecake Company offers an intimate eating and drinking experience. The St. Augustine location has 20 seats, and reservations are only given to returning customers. The restaurant offers over 40 flavors of home-cooked cheesecake as well as carefully-crafted European cheeseboards, soups, salads, appetizers, entrees and more.

It’s a lovely place to stop if you have the time to sit, relax and enjoy an entirely unique culinary experience. If you’re on a time crunch, you can stop by their take-out window and order your favorite items to-go.

We were greeted with a breathtaking presentation of beautiful charcuterie boards, hummus boards, crab and lobster dips, jams and cheesecakes. The level of care that goes into each and every menu item at Bar Harbor Cheesecake Company is spectacular.

We sampled the Island Grove Blueberry Moscato. It was smooth, with a slight sweetness that is flavorful while not overwhelming.

We also sampled three cheesecake flavors: blueberry lemon, chocolate espresso and amaretto. Each was exquisite. The blueberry lemon was sweet and refreshing, the chocolate espresso tasted rich and decadent while the amaretto was nutty and delicious. While we recommend trying all three, our favorite was the amaretto. The cheesecake samplings also paired wonderfully with the blueberry moscato.

We’d never been to a restaurant quite like Bar Harbor Cheesecake Company. If you only have time to stop by one eatery in all of St. Augustine, it should be this one. You won’t regret it.

The Tasting Tours hosts a number of separate food tours across St. Augustine and Jacksonville, Florida. To learn more, go to TheTastingTours.com.

Relax & enjoy the evening sunset

After an incredibly filling day of food of wine, we recommend a relaxing evening. You can walk around more of the historic downtown area, or head back to the inn. We decided to enjoy the sunset from the comfort of the back patio of our hotel room.

Late night Ghost Tours of St. Augustine

With a city that dates back as far as St. Augustine, a somewhat spooky history is to be expected. If ghosts and ghouls are of interest to you, you’ll definitely want to consider one of St. Augustine’s many unique and thrilling ghost tours. We went with Ghost Tours of St. Augustine, which is a 75-minute walking tour that stops by some of the most haunting spots in the city.

We learned the chilling history of some of St. Augustine’s most haunted locations from the cemetery to haunted hotels, churches, alleyways and even the Castillo de San Marcos.

Once the ghost tour is over, we recommend walking around the empty streets of St. Augustine and taking in their beauty at night. You’ll likely remain full from the generous food and wine tour for the rest of the night, but if you work up an appetite for a late-night snack, we recommend checking out Burger Buckets. The Brauhaus Gourmet Pretzel and the homemade ice-cream deserve a chef’s kiss.

Day 3

Breakfast with a view

Once again, we started our day off with a tasty complimentary breakfast at the Edgewater Inn. This time, we decided to take the food to-go and enjoy our meal on our water-front patio.

St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum

In order to really get a feel for the impact of St. Augustine’s historic past, we recommend visiting as many museums and historical sites as you can fit in your trip. We decided to stop by St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum, where we had the opportunity to learn about the lengthy history of the lighthouse. With admission, you can climb to the top of the lighthouse for some remarkable views of the city, and you can also explore the premises and museum grounds.

St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park

To learn more about some of the species native to St. Augustine along with wildlife from around the globe, stop by the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park. Serving as an educational zoo, funds from the Alligator Farm go to wildlife research and conservation efforts. It’s a great place to stop by if you have any animal lovers or small children in your group.

Lunch at Meehan’s Irish Pub & Seafood House

For lunch, stop by Meehan’s Irish Pub & Seafood House, located right across the Matanzas River. You can find traditional Irish bites here, from the Shepherd’s Pie to the Meatloaf Dinner. Head upstairs to enjoy Johnny’s Oyster Bar on a spacious outdoor deck overlooking the water.

The Hand-Cut Irish Chips are unmatched. Perfectly crispy and tossed in garlic, parsley and parmesan, you’ll find yourself finishing off the entire bowl if you aren’t careful.

The Oysters Meehan are another must-try. These delicious fresh shucked oysters are baked with lemon garlic herb butter and topped with parmesan.

We also ordered the Fresh Catch Sandwich, which is served over fresh tomato and zesty slaw, and topped with a key lime aioli. During our visit, the featured catch of the day was Blackened Mahi-Mahi. Once again, this dish was fantastic.

Everything we tried at Meehan’s genuinely impressed us, and we’ll definitely return the next time we’re in St. Augustine.

Lightner Museum

After lunch, stroll over to the Lightner Museum for an afternoon of art and history. This historic museum occupies the old Alcazar Hotel, a Gilded Age resort built by Henry Flagler in 1888. Now, the Lightner Museum — named after Chicago publisher Otto C. Lightner — is home to an impressive collection of 19th and early 20th century fine and decorative art.

Free tour & tasting at St. Augustine Distillery

St. Augustine Distillery is another exciting place to visit while in St. Augustine. It offers complimentary distillery tours and liquor tastings throughout the day. During the COVID-19 pandemic, tours are still happening but they are currently self-guided. Along the way, you can learn more about the brewing and distillery process while tasting some signature cocktails like the Florida Mule, New World Gin & Tonic, Rum Tiki and the Old Fashioned.

The Florida Mule featured all the best parts of a typical Mule cocktail, with an added layer of flavor. In short, we loved it.

The Gin & Tonic was our favorite of the four cocktails. It was refreshing, tasty and not too strong.

The Rum Tiki had all the flavors of a tropical beach beverage, and would only be made better by adding it to a frozen cocktail.

You either love or hate an Old Fashioned, and if you love them this is definitely one you’ll want to sample.

Vodka, gin, rum and bourbon are available to purchase at the end of the tour, as well as the cocktail mixes, all of which are prepared right on-site in the distillery.

Dinner at St. Augustine Fish Camp

For dinner, we stopped by St. Augustine Fish Camp. This new restaurant recently opened in 2020 with the goal of combining a welcoming neighborhood atmosphere with fresh and creative seafood dishes. From our perspective, it achieved just that.

To drink, we ordered the Cucumber Basil Gimlet which features Nolet’s Gin, St. Germain Elderflower Liquor, cucumber, fresh basil, simple and lime.

To start with, we ordered the Broiled Oysters. They were cooked to perfection with horseradish bacon cream. We highly recommend this appetizer.

For dinner entrees, we enjoyed The Catch of the Day, which was flounder, as well as the grilled salmon with horseradish hollandaise, steamed spinach and parsley new potatoes.

For dessert, the Signature Bread Pudding is a must. During our visit, the flavor was cookies & cream, but it changes day-to-day so be sure to ask. It was mouthwatering, and our only regret was not being able to finish the entire dish.

Believe us, it was even more delectable than it was beautiful.

Day 4

Check out of the Inn

As the trip comes to an end, it’s time to pack up your belongings and say goodbye to the Edgewater Inn. If you have the time, we highly recommend making a few more stops before you have to leave, though.

Castillo de San Marcos National Monument

The Castillo de San Marcos is a famous national monument located right along the Matanzas River. The historic fort was originally built by the Spanish to defend Florida. The monument now preserves the oldest masonry fortification in the continental U.S. and maintains over 450 years of cross-cultural history. During your visit, you’ll get to see where soldiers once slept and where strong walls of coquina stone protected against cannon fire.

Wednesday Farmer’s Market at the St. Augustine Beach

If you’re going to be in St. Augustine on a Wednesday, we highly recommend making a quick trip to the Wednesday Farmer’s Market at the St. Augustine Beach. Local merchants and small businesses gather to sell fresh produce, homemade goods and more. It’s important to support local businesses, so this is a great pit-stop to make before you head home.

Calling all coffee lovers! Stop by the Growers Alliance booth for some freshly brewed Kenyan coffee, served both iced and hot. You can choose from a variety of flavors, sweeteners and milks (both dairy and nondairy options are available).

Founder of Growers Alliance, Martin Kabaki, grew up on a coffee farm in Kenya. Now a resident of St. Augustine, he created Growers Alliance Cafe & Gift Shop. Profits go to supporting coffee growers, clean water initiatives, orphanages, hospitals and education in Kenya. To learn more about how they’re giving back, click here.

If you’re not able to make it to the farmer’s market, you can still try some Kenyan coffee at the Growers Alliance cafe storefront located just down the street from the St. Augustine Beach, at 322 Anastasia Blvd.

You can also find other vendors selling products like fresh honey, jams and much more.

Lunch at Sunset Grille

For a final lunch in St. Augustine, we made our way to Sunset Grille on A1A. 2021 is Sunset Grille’s 30th year in operation, and it’s no surprise after you’ve tasted their food. Much of the menu is fairly simple, offering a variety of seafood dishes as well as more traditional American fare. But the quality of the food paired with the friendly staff at Sunset Grille truly sets it apart.

We started off with a classic, the Mozzarella Sticks. They were simple but delicious, served with a homemade marinara sauce.

For our entrees, we went with the Sunset Chicken Sandwich and the Baja Salad. Both were incredibly filling and made for a fresh, tasty lunch by the beach.

Wave goodbye to beautiful St. Augustine

Now it’s time to wave goodbye to a beautiful city full of history and culture. St. Augustine has a lot to offer, and it’s nearly impossible to do everything in just one trip. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or an educational adventure, St. Augustine is worth your consideration.

6 cups chicken stock, high quality
2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
1 small onion, finely chopped
1 1/2 cups Arborio rice
Pinch of saffron threads
1 cup dry white wine
3/4 cup freshly grated Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 tablespoons chopped flat-leaf parsley
Salt and freshly ground pepper

Risotto Milanese Preparation:

In a small saucepan, bring the chicken stock to a simmer; keep warm on the side. In a wide, large saucepan, gently heat the olive oil. Next add the onion, season with salt and pepper and cook over moderate heat, stirring, until tender and translucent, about 5 minutes. Stir in the Arborio and cook for 1 minute, making sure to thoroughly coat rice with oil. Add the wine and saffron to the rice. Cook, stirring with a flat bottom wooden spoon, until the wine is absorbed making sure to get the corners of the pot. Add 1 cup of the warm stock and cook over moderate heat, stirring constantly, until nearly absorbed. You should be able to drag your wooden spoon across the bottom and the rice hold its place. Continue adding the stock 1/2 cup at a time, stirring constantly, until it is nearly absorbed and repeat additions. The risotto is done when the rice is al dente and suspended in a thick, creamy sauce, about 20 minutes total. Turn off your heat and check your seasoning and adjust with salt and pepper. Stir in the cheese, butter and parsley.

Osso Buco Ingredients:

4 (12-ounce) veal shanks
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup canola oil (or substitute another neutral oil)
1 yellow onion, medium diced (bite size)
4 carrots, peeled and medium diced (bite size)
2 celery stalk, medium diced (bite size)
6 garlic cloves, minced
3 bay leaf
1 rosemary sprig
2 thyme sprigs
8 oz tomato paste
10 cups veal stock or high quality beef stock
1 cup dry red wine
2 (14.5-ounce) can whole peeled plum tomatoes, drained and crushed
10 flat-leaf parsley sprigs, plus more, chopped, for garnish
1 tablespoon lemon zest, for garnish
Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper

Osso Buco Preparation:

Preheat oven to 350°F. With butcher’s twine tie each veal shank once around the circumference so that it holds the bone and meat together in the center. Season the veal shanks with salt and pepper. Then dredge the veal shanks in flour, and pat off the excess.

Heat the canola oil in a Dutch oven or other heavy bottomed braising pan until shimmering. Add the veal shanks, and cook until well browned,4 – 5 minutes per side, adjusting the heat as needed to avoid burning the flour. Avoid overcrowding of the pan to ensure a proper sear. Once seared move and set aside.

In the same pan, add the carrots, celery, onion, and garlic, and cook over medium to high heat, stirring constantly, until slightly caramelized and translucent, 3-4 minutes. Add the tomato paste, and stir around to coat the vegetables. Continue cooking for another 4 minutes. Deglaze the casserole with the red wine. Bring to a boil, and cook until the wine is reduced by half. Add in the veal stock and add the crushed tomatoes, thyme, rosemary, bay leaf, and parsley.

Return the veal shanks to the casserole, and bring to a simmer over high heat. Once the liquid simmers, cover, transfer to the oven, and cook for 2 1/2 hours, checking tenderness with a knife. Once tender remove from pot and set aside.

Using a colander remove the vegetables herbs from the braising liquid and reserve on the side. Continue to reduce the braising liquid until it comes to a consistency of your liking. While reducing skim any grease off the top with a large spoon. Check your seasoning and adjust with salt and pepper.

Place a bed of risotto in the bottom of a serving bowl. Next place a shank on top being sure to discard the twine before serving. Ladle the reduced braising liquid on top. Add a spoonful of braising vegetables in the bowl and garnish with lemon zest and chopped parsley.

City of Winter Garden presents: Shop, Dine, & Stroll – March 27th

City of Winter Garden presents: Shop, Dine, & Stroll – March 27th

Sidewalk Sale in Celebration of National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day!
All-Day (Open to Close)
Location: Winter Garden Downtown Historic District, 300 W. Plant St.

The Love Local campaign, launched by the City of Winter Garden last fall, continues in 2021 with a line-up of programs and activities to help small businesses recover from financial losses due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The intent of the Love Local campaign is to build awareness of the importance of shopping and dining local to support small businesses and community organizations that are vital to the city.

Winter Garden is well-known for its small town charm – and it’s no surprise with the plethora of mature trees and beautiful flowers to the authentic historic brick buildings that line the city’s downtown area. Winter Garden also features an award-winning farmers market and is home to many one-of-a-kind locally owned restaurants, unique shops, art, and entertainment. Local businesses are the heart and soul of Winter Garden, and they need our support.

Each and every one of us can have an impact. Every time you make a purchase, you are making an impact. Choose to go to a local restaurant over a national chain. Shop at local boutiques instead of big-box retailers. Shopping online and at national chains is convenient, but when you support local businesses, you are strengthening the backbone of a community. According to the organization Independent We Stand, for every $100 spent at local businesses, $68 will stay in the community. Whereas only $43 remains in the community when shopping at a national chain.

From now through the summer, the Love Local campaign will include monthly activities and programs that support local businesses and community organizations and on Saturday,
March 27th, Downtown Winter Garden and Citywide will celebrate “Shop, Dine, & Stroll”.

Shop, Dine, & Stroll – Saturday, March 27th

In celebration of National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day, come out to an outdoor shopping and dining experience to support the independently owned businesses that make Downtown Winter Garden so unique! The nationally observed holiday serves an even greater purpose this year as small businesses strive to recover from the pandemic.

March’s ideal weather makes it the perfect time to stroll the charming streets, shops, and outdoor dining areas. Peruse the outdoor sales racks, fresh spring apparel, accessories and home goods to get ready for the new season. The independently owned shops will also feature in-store and online specials/promotions, as well as curbside delivery.

Take a shopping break to enjoy freshly prepared menu items and beverages at Downtown’s one-of-a-kind eateries, and grab a seat at one of the many outdoor umbrella tables that line the historic streets to enjoy a side of Florida sunshine.

Shop, Dine & Stroll will be held rain or shine. Sales, special offers, delivery methods, and operating hours vary per merchant. For more information, visit www.downtownwg.com/everything-you-need-to-know-about-shop-dine-stroll.

Inside Look: Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park Reopens with New Food, Drinks & Merchandise

After shutting its doors nearly one year ago, Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park has officially reopened to the public. Guests can once again experience the park, which is themed around a ski resort built in Florida after a surprise snowfall, that is now in the process of melting away into Blizzard Beach Water Park.

Whether you prefer to lounge in the sun in front of Melt-Away Bay, get your heart racing down Summit Plummet or stuff your face at Lottawatta Lodge, Blizzard Beach has something for you. Disney invited us to experience a media preview of Blizzard Beach just days before it reopened on March 7, 2021. We sampled some new food and beverage items, and even got a sneak peek at the new merchandise available in 2021.

Inside Look: Disney’s Blizzard Beach Water Park Reopens with New Food, Drinks & Merchandise

Blizzard Beach is bringing back some of its most popular eats, while introducing other brand-new menu items to the various snack stands and quick-service restaurants throughout the park. Some of the best food and drink spots at Blizzard Beach include Lottawatta Lodge, Avalunch, Warming Hut, Cooling Hut and the Polar Pub.

Menu items throughout Blizzard Beach are diverse, offering many options for individuals with dietary restrictions. Vegan and gluten-free bites are aplenty throughout Blizzard Beach.

During our trip, we had the opportunity to sample some of the snacks and beverages available for purchase at the water park. Here are some of our favorites.

Honey Butter-Chicken Sandwich

Available at the Warming Hut, the Honey Butter-Chicken Sandwich is an appetizing dish made with tasty fried chicken, topped with honey and pickles. The honey is a sweet addition to a classic sandwich, and the combination of flavors is delicious. This sandwich is served with your choice of chips on the side.

Shrimp Louie Lettuce Wrap

Tasty shrimp and pico de gallo fill this lettuce wrap, making for the perfect healthy bite during your fun in the sun at Disney’s Blizzard Beach. It’s a light meal that’s surprisingly more filling than you might expect. The wrap is also served with a side of chips.

White Cap Flatbread

You can find this yummy white sauce flatbread at Lottawatta Lodge. It comes topped with chicken breast, bell peppers, parmesan, bacon and tomato. This menu item is filling without being too heavy, making it a great option during a long day at the water park.

Plant-Based Bratwurst Sandwich

This plant-based treat is a fantastic option for anybody looking for a heartier bite. Whether you’re a vegan or a meat-lover, the delicious flavors in this sandwich are sure to impress. This dish is served with roasted pepper, pickled onions and a side of house-made chips.

Banana Cabana Cocktail

The Banana Cabana cocktail is made with Cruzan Mango Rum, Parrot Bay Coconut Rum, Bols Crème de Banana, orange and pineapple juice and a splash of grenadine. This adult beverage is a great refresher on a sunny Florida afternoon. The cocktail is nothing short of delicious, and we highly recommend trying it the next time you find yourself at Blizzard Beach.

You can find the Banana Cabana as well as the Piña CoLAVA, Blue Blizzard Margarita, Rum Runner and many more at the Polar Pub.

Mark Dukes, general manager of Blizzard Beach Water Park, welcomed us and emphasized how excited he and the Blizzard Beach cast members are for the park’s reopening.

First Look: Loading…Gastrobrunch Restaurant in Historic Downtown St. Cloud, Florida

Loading…Gastrobrunch restaurant is a hidden gem located in historic downtown St. Cloud, just a short drive away from Orlando, south of Lake Nona and east of Kissimmee.

I didn’t even know there was a historic downtown St Cloud – but it does appear that downtown St. Cloud is experiencing a bit of a renaissance lately with new hotels and other developments in the works – understandable since there have been quite a few new residential developments in the area recently.

Owned by friends James Brady, Matt Rody and Jahnae Allen, Loading…Gastrobrunch restaurant also serves as the in-house dining option for the recently renovated adjacent Hunter Arms hotel.

The owners of Loading… are all veterans of the local restaurant industry including Disney World and Universal Orlando with a focus on service and ambiance. They opened in 2020 during the pandemic so word is just getting out now about the place.

The menu, led by chef Vaughn Collins features “Spaniflora” (Spanish and Florida style) influenced dishes, breakfast and brunch items, and a newly expanded dinner menu. Chef Vaughn Collins hails from the storied kitchens of Charleston, South Carolina, so you know their shrimp and grits and other Southern influenced dishes will be top notch. The stone ground corn grits are sourced all from local St. Cloud area Mick Farms.

I had the shrimp n’ grits here on a recent visit and it was one of the best renditions I have had, creamy corn grits with a savory pork a la minute sauce and full of fresh and plump local shrimp.

The brunch items like the cinnibun French Toast and the Spaniflora chicken chorizo waffle tacos are also quite the delight.

Cinni-bun French Toast – $12
Thick semolina smeared w/ brown sugar & spices, icing & cream cheese butter.

Spaniflora Chicken Waffle Tacos – $15
Waffle cone taco shells with waffle cone encrusted chicken, chorizo, peppers, onions, corn, heirloom tomatoes, cotija cheese and sriracha cream

Shrimp N’ Grits – $24
Mick Farms stone ground grits, shrimp, peppers, onions & pork a la minute sauce.

We recently spoke with Chef Vaughn Collins – who fell in love with the restaurant industry’s fast pace, sh– talking, knuckle burning atmosphere – about his background as well as upcoming plans at Loading…

Interview with Loading…Gastrobrunch’s Chef Vaughn Collins

Tasty Chomps: As the chef of Loading Gastrobrunch, what are some upcoming plans that you have for the menu and restaurant? What are some changes that guests might see?

Chef Vaughn Collins: Over the next few weeks we will be launching an ever rotating specials menu. It will be very small plate forward and have diverse selection. This is something St. Cloud hasn’t seen before so it will be interesting to see people shake from the chain restaurant vibe and experience something different. Coming soon will also be a more refined brunch menu, composed dishes rather than an over abundance of prepared menu items that beg for every dollar.

– What are some goals you have for Loading Gastrobrunch in 2021?

I can say with confidence that our bar produces dinner cocktails that would compete with Charleston’s craft bars and speakeasies. Jahnae Allen is our Bar Manager/Partner, and does a fabulous job at being the curator and mind behind our bar drinks. Best part about it is she has little to no bar experience and can still surprise. I would like the bar to get more love from our customers, skip the bud light and go for the hand selected craft beers at minimum. So to answer the question, for 2021 I would like to attract more people towards cocktails, Jahnae puts a ton of work into them.

– What are some of your favorite dishes on the menu right now and why?

Spaniflora waffle tacos , hands down. I’m a sucker for gimmicky food. It’s our least ordered taco as well.

– What are the most popular dishes right now at Loading?

Without going into number land I will say our chicken and waffle is a big seller, along with our tacos. Our biggest seller is our Meat, Eggs and Flip on our brunch menu.

– What are some lessons you have learned during 2020 – especially opening in the middle of a pandemic?

Honestly, having a hopeful outlook. I wouldn’t say we had any lessons that were learned besides praying we would make it. We were on the verge a few times – The partners had sleepless nights. It was terrible to turn staff away knowing they couldn’t pay their bills. Being grateful for the business you have is something we learned.

– Tell us about the dinner menu and what are some highlights there that people should really try?

Pretty much the whole dinner menu are simplified versions of finer dining entrees I brought with me from Charleston.

People need to try our shrimp and grits for sure. We have local stone ground grits. I will put my grit recipe against any other.

The beef short rib is a big underdog. It is braised to perfection, comes with a butter mounded bordelaise, broccolini ( which is the stalks that grow of the sides of broccoli) with succotash. Problem is people focused on the meat, starch, veg dinners of the 90’s that it gets pushed to the side.

– What are some childhood memories around food that sticks with you to this day?

My grandmother making red rice, red rice is a very southern dish. I have memories standing at her leg watching her mix all the ingredients. I also remember the short in the oven that buzzed all the time. When I heard that buzzer randomly going off I knew she was making something, half the time it was red rice.

– What are some lessons you have learned along the way as a chef?

I have learned things from inexperienced restaurant owners all the way to narrow minded industry tycoons. Knife time is something I would like to highlight, a small young kid from Guatemala taught me the resting knife trick, he explained the more you have to pick up and put down your knife, you waste time. Top and bottoming an onion, then peeling it, after that you cut it in half and julienne the onion and repeat. However top and bottoming all the onions first without putting your knife down to peel saves time.

Learning to open an oyster with just about anything…… seriously everything from a hair pin to a flat head screw driver.

– Tell us about your time in Charleston, South Carolina – tell us about the food scene there and what makes it unique / special.

Charleston is a booming city while still keeping its history. Its food scene is certainly different, having chefs that run smaller restaurants sometimes with only 15 seats, to huge establishments that need 8-10 chef in a kitchen to manage to line and prep.

A lot of it is southern cuisine, which is mainly from Africa, bringing a cultural and historic blast from the past. Although with African cooking came terrible and hard times with slavery and bondage, we have learned so much from African culture. Full of fat and salt, braising and smoking, Charleston IS southern cooking.

– What are some personal resolutions you have for 2021?

Spend more time with my family! I was kinda of absent as I pursued my career while keeping food on the table. God bless Bonnie (wife) for sticking by my side and taking care of the home front. It has surely paid off in more ways then one. We are an unstoppable family unit and they deserve my time.

– Favorite local St Cloud eats?

Touch of Basil. I have had pizza from all over the country, Touch of Basil isn’t the absolute best however using St. Cloud water to activate yeast and Florida weather to allow proper rise I have the upmost respect for them.

GoFundMe Campaign – Help Bring Local Orlando Snacks to Orange County Convention Vaccination Workers

0

Let’s organize some snack/food drop offs for the front line workers at OCCC !! We are fundraising to purchase snacks/bites from local Orlando restaurants and markets to help feed the front line workers at the Orange County Convention Center vaccination site!

“At the Orange County Convention Center’s vaccination site we have lots of EMS and health dept folks out there. They welcome any snacks/food drop offs – if any place ever wants to drop off anything as a thank you or a treat or something, they are more than willing to have them there. And it always helps morale. The team can’t really go anywhere because of time constraints.   It’ll be a gesture and is such a great morale thing since the site is staffed 6 days per week for 12 hours a day. ”

This week , Tien Hung Market / Banh Mi Boy’s Benjamin Phan delivered over 200 Vietnamese Spring Rolls and gallons of Vietnamese coffee to support the Orange County Convention Center vaccination workers. Tien Hung is one of the oldest Vietnamese owned markets in Orlando located in the historic Mills 50 District.

Mr. Phan donated the coffee while money raised through a gofundme by Ricky Ly of TastyChomps.com the local Orlando food guide was used to purchase the food and support local Orlando businesses –

HARVEST FARM TO FORK LUNCHEON

When a hotel is located in an abundantly rich agricultural area like Florida — and has an on-site farm — you know the appeal of local, sustainable food and farm-to-table dining takes center stage. The Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes features seven dining and lounge options while the adjacent JW Marriott Orlando, Grande Lakes has another eight. The harvest farm to fork luncheon highlighted a variety of curated food and beverage experiences available throughout the resort.

WINE PAIRING DINNER & MINI CONCERT WITH JOEY FATONE

Grande Lakes Orlando is home to an extensive agricultural operation, Whisper Creek Farm. This 7,000-square-foot fruit and vegetable garden also features local chickens and an apiary to create a truly authentic farm to-fork experience. This culinary highlight showcased a sit-down dinner with farm-fresh ingredients and wine pairing. Dessert and a mini-concert by multi-platinum *NSYNC recording artist and star of Broadway, film and television Joey Fatone and special guest Ryan Cabrera ended the evening on the sweetest of notes.

FALCONRY SCHOOL

The pursuit of wild game in its natural habitat, using a trained bird of prey — is one of the world’s oldest traditions, and a closer look at this intriguing ancient practice has now come to Grande Lakes Orlando for guests to experience. With the resort situated on over 500 acres of the most enchanting natural surroundings found in Florida, the opportunity to participate in a Falconry class is an exciting addition to their ecological and outdoor activities.

KNIFE & SPOON CHEF’S TABLE CAVIAR BRUNCH

Joined by Michael Passmore, founder of Passmore Ranch, an ever-growing 86 acre ranch nestled in the rolling grasslands of Sloughhouse, California, shadowed by the Sierra mountain range. Passmore Ranch is known for its sustainably raised and sourced fish, and perhaps more so, for making of some of the world’s finest small batch caviar for his chefs. Passmore Ranch fish have received a “Best Choice” rating from The Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch program, its highest ranking possible for sustainable practices and positive environmental impact.

My Selected Curated Experiences:

FLY CASTING DEMONSTRATION

Captain Mark Benson and a representative from G. Loomis led the G. Mark Benson, a native of Central Florida, caught his first fish at the age of four, and he’s been hooked on the sport ever since.

ITALIAN COOKING DEMONSTRATION

We were taught how to prepare contemporary, fine Italian cuisine inspired by the original Primo, a world-class restaurant in a 19th century Victorian house in coastal Maine. With a “homegrown” concept, Primo at JW Marriott Orlando emphasizes using the freshest local ingredients to create imaginative and dazzling recipes.  Primo chefs led a fun, tasty, and educational class on the art of pasta and pizza-making.

BOURBON & BOW TIES

We enjoyed sipping barrel-aged bourbon while discovering the technique in tying the perfect bow tie. After the presentation, we were given a special gift provided by The Mall at Millenia, Orlando’s luxury shopping destination that offers an unparalleled shopping experience with 150 stores, services and eateries including Hermès, Louis Vuitton, Gucci and Tiffany & Co.

Thank you Grande Lakes Orlando for generously hosting us and for the first class service all weekend from all of the team members involved.  Everyone did a phenomenal job making us feel incredibly special from the start to end of our staycation.  We are looking forward to coming back to the next Curated Experiences weekend on April 23-25, 2021!

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is always a must when you’re visiting the city. Other Busch Gardens festivals and events throughout the year include the Food & Wine Festival, Sesame Street Kids’ Weekends, Summer Nights, Bier Fest, Howl-O-Screem and Christmas Town. If you’re visiting Busch Gardens during a festival, we also highly recommend purchasing a food and beverage sampling lanyard to truly get your money’s worth.

If you keep your eyes peeled, you might catch a glimpse of some giraffes, tigers, gorillas, elephants or even flamingos. In fact, Busch Gardens Tampa Bay is home to over 200 different animal species.

Iron Gwazi is coming soon to Busch Gardens Tampa Bay! The brand-new hybrid coaster is expected to open sometime soon in 2021.

After a long day at Busch Gardens, it’s time to check into your hotel. We stayed at the Epicurean Hotel, which is one of Marriott’s Autograph Collection Hotels. The amenities were just what we needed for a short weekend trip, and the location made the Epicurean the ideal choice. It’s walking distance from many of Tampa Bay’s best restaurants in SoHo, and only a short drive away from its greatest attractions. Most importantly, the culinary options at the Epicurean are unmatched.

We stayed in a Classic King room, with views of the street.

The bathroom had a spacious walk-in rainfall shower. (Once you’ve experienced the luxury of a rainfall shower, you’ll never want to go back.)

A pool deck is located on the bottom floor, with plenty of seating and privacy throughout.

Drinks at The EDGE Rooftop Cocktail Lounge

Before dinner, we decided to start the night off with some drinks. Conveniently located right on the top floor of the Epicurean Hotel, The EDGE is a modern rooftop cocktail lounge that offers a range of tasty drink concoctions. We enjoyed the Mixed Berry Mojito (right) and the Motorworks Pulp Friction (left).

The Pulp Friction is a tasty grapefruit IPA brewed and bottled locally in Bradenton, Florida. The Mixed Berry Mojito combines sweet berry flavors with rum and seltzer water. Both are incredibly refreshing options on a warm Tampa Bay day.

Dinner at Bulla Gastrobar

For dinner, we walked to Bulla Gastrobar, which is located just down the street from the Epicurean Hotel. This restaurant, with multiple locations across the state of Florida, offers an impressive assortment of hand-crafted cocktails, tapas, entrees and desserts.

For drinks, we ordered the Lemongrass Commons (left) made with gin, Elderflower, lemongrass syrup and cucumber, as well as the Moscow Mule (right) made with vodka, ginger beer, cardamom & currant infused syrup, candied ginger and lime.

We knew we had to try a few tapas during our visit. We enjoyed the Ham Croquettes, Patatas Bravas and the Tuna Tartare. The croquettes were paired with fig jelly, which turned out to be quite the delicious pairing. The potatoes were reminiscent of breakfast potatoes (in the best way) and the tartare was both fresh and flavorful. While all the tapas were tasty, if you are only ordering one we highly recommend trying the Tuna Tartare – you won’t regret it.

For the entree, we ordered the 5 oz. Salmon, and our only mistake was not ordering the 7.5 oz. With no exaggeration – this is likely the best salmon we’ve ever tasted. It’s also certainly a contender for one of the best dishes of our entire Tampa Bay trip. This salmon was cooked to absolute perfection, and came served with baby spinach, chickpeas and a lemon cream sauce that added the ultimate chef’s kiss onto this entree.

For dessert, we went with both the Torrija and the Churros. The Torrija is a mouthwatering dish made with caramelized brioche, mascarpone ice cream and honey. Think bread pudding meets french toast, and it’s even better than you’d imagine. The churros were sweet, crunchy and came served with warm chocolate and dulce de leche sauces.

We cannot recommend Bulla Gastrobar enough. Other restaurant locations include Coral Gables, The Falls in Miami, Doral, Winter Park, Atlanta, Charlotte and even Plano, Texas.

Saturday

Brunch at Oxford Exchange

Inside Oxford Exchange you can find a restaurant, a coffee bar, a bookstore and a variety of home decor available for purchase. The 1891 building is an incredibly stylish and sophisticated spot, effectively transporting guests to the many historic clubs, libraries and shops of London. Architectural Digest even named Oxford Exchange one of the 50 Most Beautiful Independent Stores in the U.S.

After exploring the building a bit, we started brunch off with a lovely vanilla oat milk latte and a caramel latte.

We ordered both the Poppy Seed Pancakes and the Super Simple Sandwich on rye bread. The pancakes were tasty and a great choice for anybody with a sweet tooth. The Super Simple Sandwich, made with eggs, cheese and bacon, was simply exquisite.

Brunch is served at Oxford Exchange on Saturdays and Sundays from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Ybor City Historic Walking Tour

After brunch, it was time to meet up with a tour guide to explore the Tampa Bay area a bit further. Ybor City Historic Walking Tours offers private, educational walking tours of the city. We learned all about the lengthy and impressive history of Ybor City, which was founded by Vicente Martinez-Ybor.

The bricks which lay the foundation of the city throughout its roads are all original from 1886. Even many of the historic buildings have been impressively preserved over the years, with minimal restoration work except when required. Since the city is designated as historic, whenever new infrastructure is built (such as a parking garage) they too must be designed to match the original 19th century architecture.

With the influx of immigrants during the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, cultural social clubs became a popular means of escape. They were a safe place for working immigrants to go so they could speak their native language, listen to their native music and celebrate their native culture together. These social clubs also provided essential services like health care to all members and their families. All of these services were provided for a shockingly low monthly fee, making them critical to the flourishing of these nationalities in Ybor City.

Some of these social clubs like the Spanish Social Club (pictured below), the Italian Social Club and the Cuban Social Club are still standing today. In fact, the current owners of the Italian Social are direct descendants of members that helped lay the bricks of the very building that stands tall today.

When Mr. Ybor invited immigrants to come to the city and work, he provided shotgun style homes that were of considerable size for the time. Often times, the immigrants would invite their entire families to America and they would share these homes together. Three of these original Ybor City houses remain standing today, pictured below.

Ybor City is also famous for its abundance of chickens and roosters wondering throughout the city.

The Cuban Social Club (pictured below) still stands today, with the majority of its original architecture preserved over the years.

We ended the walking tour at the Parque Amigos De Jose Marti, which celebrates Jose Marti as a historical figure who was critical in the foundation and overall success of Ybor City. The small area of land is actually owned by Cuba, complete with soil imported from the island. So, by walking into this park you are literally walking on Cuban soil.

Our tour guide, Max Herman, was incredibly personable, articulate and knowledgable. Being an Ybor City native, he had a personal connection to each location that was beautifully transparent throughout the tour. He loves Ybor City, and by the end of the walking tour, so did we.

Lunch at Casa Santo Stefano

After working up an appetite walking around Ybor City, we made our way down the street toward Casa Santo Stefano for lunch. This authentic Sicilian restaurant will make you feel like you’re enjoying a home cooked meal from grandma, except perhaps in a more extravagant venue. Historic photos scatter the walls, depicting many of the founding Sicilian families of Ybor City. Even Casa Santo Stefano’s colorful backsplashes, tabletops and countertops are all hand-painted and ordered in person from a family in Caltagirone, Sicily. It doesn’t get much more authentic than that without heading over to Sicily yourself.

The restaurant is also housed in an original 1925 Ybor City Macaroni Factory, as celebrated by small details in its decor (notice the light fixtures made from dried spaghetti on the right in the photo below).

For starters, we ordered the Calamari Fritti, served with Calabrian pepper spicy tomato sauce and zucchini strings. Calamari is always a win, and theirs does not disappoint. The spicy tomato sauce pairs excellently with the calamari, and the fried zucchini strings were a surprisingly delicious substitute for your typical fries.

Complimentary focaccia bread is provided, which is equally as delicious.

We also ordered the Arancia cocktail, a wonderfully refreshing orange flavored gin drink.

For our main course, we ordered the Ravioli Di Ricotta and the Cartocciata Salsiccia. The home-made ravioli was exquisitely cooked with ricotta and pesto, tossed in tomato sauce with a sprinkle of Grana Padano cheese. The Cartocciata is a popular Sicilian street food similar to a calzone, and ours was filled with tasty Italian sausage, green peppers and onions. We highly recommend either of these lunch entrees, as both were delightful.

Perhaps most exciting of all, for dessert we enjoyed the delicious Panna Cotta. Made with classic vanilla panna cotta and fresh berries coulis, this dessert dish is nothing short of decadent.

Careful – you may find yourself wanting to lick the bowl clean.

The Florida Aquarium

Next up, to continue with the historic and educational themes of the day, we made our way The Florida Aquarium. The sizable aquarium is home to over 20,000 aquatic plant and animal species. It’s a great destination for visitors of all ages. Plenty of interactive activities and games are available for children, but there’s just as much to learn about and admire as an adult. It’s definitely a fun way to kill an hour or two during your trip.

We stopped to observe and gently pet some stingrays.

The Florida Aquarium is also located right in the heart of Tampa Bay, making it a convenient stop during your day.

Dinner at Ulele

For dinner, Ulele is an absolute must-try. Located right on the banks of the Hillsborough River, Ulele is a beautiful restaurant with an exciting menu that celebrates Tampa’s Native American history. Ulele pays careful attention to fresh, organic ingredients, and all craft beers are made on-site at Ulele Spring Brewery by Brewmaster Tim Shackton.

For drinks, we started off with the limited-edition Honeymoon Lager, made with Florida strawberries locally sourced from Plant City. The brew is both refreshing and tasty without being too sweet, and we can’t recommend it enough.

For our appetizer, we went with the Charbroiled Oysters, which are barbacoa-grilled with garlic butter, grated Parmesan and Romano cheeses, and served with warm bread. These oysters were simply delectable, and definitely a must.

For entrees, we ordered the Bone-In Ribeye and the Gouda Grouper. All entrees are served with your choice of vegetables and potatoes or golden jewel rice blend with cranberry beans.

The ribeye was large, juicy and seasoned perfectly. The portions are quite generous, so you’ll definitely want to go on an empty stomach.

The grouper was fantastic as well. The fresh fillet is paired with a mouthwatering smoked Gouda ale béchamel sauce.

For dessert, we treated ourself to the Naviera Espresso Chocolate Swirl and the Key West Key Lime Stack. The espresso ice cream was rich, smooth, creamy and delectable. The key lime stack was just as amazing, adding a refreshing twist to a classic dessert dish. Either of these desserts alone are worth a trip to Ulele.

The restaurant is actually named after young Native American Princess Ulele, who’s bronze sculpture is illuminated near the restaurant’s entrance.

Sunday

Brunch at Élevage

Brunch is always a good idea, so we had to do it all over again on Sunday. This time, we brunched at Élevage, which is conveniently located right on the first floor of the Epicurean Hotel. You can essentially roll out of bed and enjoy delicious bites and bubbles within minutes.

We started off with some delightfully refreshing mimosas.

To eat, we enjoyed a beautifully plated Acai Bowl and the Classic. The Acai Bowl was served with acai, granola, berries, banana, coconut and organic peanut butter. The dish was fresh, filling and delicious. The Classic came with two lake meadow naturals eggs (we ordered them scrambled), meat (we chose turkey sausage), breakfast potatoes and toast. Both brunch dishes were spectacular, and surprisingly filling.

The Laxer family, which owns Élevage along with nearby Bern’s Steak House and Haven, built the world’s largest private wine collection — some of which is available to sample right at Élevage.

Explore Sparkman Wharf

Located in the Channel District along the Garrison Channel, Sparkman Wharf is Tampa Bay’s latest outdoor and entertainment destination. It features one acre of family-friendly park space surrounded by refurbished shipyard crates that house a variety of unique craft brews and dining experiences. The sound of live music echoes throughout Sparkman Wharf, creating the perfect atmosphere to sit back and take in the warm Tampa Bay sun.

Refreshing Craft Brews

Tampa Bay is also home to an impressive number of craft breweries. For visitors over the age of 21, we highly recommend checking out at least one during your trip. The breweries typically never get too crowded throughout the day, and they offer a chance to sample some local brews. During our trip, we stopped by Brew Bus Brewing.

We enjoyed Florida Avenue Brewing Co.’s Passion of the Heights and the Florida Avenue Lager, both of which were delicious and refreshing brews.

Other local breweries to consider include BarrieHaus Beer Co., Cigar City Brewing, Zydeco Brew Werks, Tampa Bay Brewing Company and many more. Visit Tampa Bay has a complete list of breweries here.

Dinner at JoToro Kitchen & Tequila Bar

To end our night, we made our way back to Sparkman Wharf for dinner at JoToro Kitchen & Tequila Bar. JoToro is an exciting new Tampa Bay restaurant created by Michelin star chef, Joe Isidori. It brings modern Mexican fare to Tampa Bay’s newly developed Channelside area. Chef Isidori has created dishes like Mexico City-style street corn and spicy Vietnamese steak, that add global twists to old school Mexican classics.

We ordered the Supreme Guac & Chips as an appetizer. It’s made with fresh avocado, roasted corn, pico, jalapeño, pickled onion, tajín, cotija and parmesan cheese. We loved it.

To drink, we tried the Blueberry Gin Fiz. This cocktail is made with delicious Ford’s Gin, fresh lemon, blueberry puree, agave and Topo Chico. It’s a great choice if you’re looking for something light, and you love the taste of blueberries.

For our entrees, we went with an order of Chili Queen Tacos and Adobo Chicken Al Carbon tacos.

The Adobo Chicken Al Carbon tacos include generous amounts of grilled chicken, salsa crudo, onion and cilantro. The Chili Queen tacos are made with tex-mex chili, lettuce, pico, crema and Colby-Jack cheese. JoToro’s tacos are incredibly tasty, and more filling than you might imagine.

For dessert, we tried the large Piña Colada Sundae and we were pleasantly surprised. The ice cream has a light and refreshing piña colada flavor, that mixes wonderfully with the fresh strawberries and kiwi slices. It’s a lovely dessert treat fit for a tropical paradise.

Monday

Wave goodbye to Tampa Bay

On Monday morning, it’s time to check out of the Epicurean Hotel and leave sunny Tampa Bay, Florida behind. If you have the time, you should consider visiting one of Tampa’s beautiful beaches before heading home. It’s never too late to sit back and soak in the sun for a few hours before a long car or plane ride.

Whether you want an educational adventure or a relaxing escape, Tampa Bay is a wonderful choice for your next long-weekend getaway.

First Look: First Watch Opens Winter Park location with Egg-Cracking Ceremony Featuring First Watch CEO Chris Tomasso & Mayor Jerry Demings

First Watch, a popular daytime café serving breakfast, brunch and lunch daily from
7am – 2:30pm opened their newest eatery this morning in the heart of Winter Park at 140 N. Orlando Ave.  The new location marks the 21st restaurant for the company in the greater Orlando area.

We stopped by the brand new First Watch – Winter Park today to attend the inaugural “Egg-Cracking” ceremony with (left to right) Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings, First Watch CEO Chris Tomasso, President and CEO of the Winter Park Chamber of Commerce Betsy Gardner Eckbert, Chief Development Officer of Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida Greg Higgerson, and Orlando Solar Bears mascot Shades.

Part flagship, part prototype evolution, the Winter Park restaurant is a thoughtful response to drastically altered customer preferences that evolved over the past 12 months.

Among the new features are:

Dedicated Take-out & Delivery Entrance

A 360° Indoor/Outdoor Bar & Cocktails

Expansive Patio & Outdoor Lounge seating

A spacious interior with new design elements

“Our original plans to open First Watch in Winter Park were postponed at the onset of the pandemic, and we used the opportunity to listen to our customers and reevaluate how we approach our restaurant design, in order to better serve our community.  Part of that evaluation meant revisiting and elevating our patios, as well as improving accessibility through carry out, delivery and curbside,” said Chris Tomasso, president and CEO of First Watch.

“We went back to the drawing board to reimagine the First Watch experience, and our Winter Park restaurant really brings this new vision to life.”

The interior of the restaurant is bright and maximizes the abundant daylight that enters the dining room, which is surrounded by tall windows. It builds upon First Watch’s Urban Farm design prototype with the addition of warm blue tones, quartz countertops and artwork that nods to its longstanding history in Central Florida.

First Watch’s curated menu takes an elevated approach to traditional and innovative offerings made to order using farm fresh ingredients.

It includes crave-able items such as Avocado Toast, Smoked Salmon Eggs Benedict, Farm Stand Breakfast Tacos and Lemon Ricotta Pancakes.

The new restaurant will launch with a seasonal menu featuring Crab & Avocado Toast, Huevos Rancheros Tostadas, Triple Berry Acai Bowl and the perfectly Instagrammable Purple Haze Lemonade.

The new restaurant will also feature First Watch’s Fresh Juice Bar with offerings including the best-selling Kale Tonic and Morning Meditation – juiced in-house daily using only the highest quality fruits and vegetables.

First Watch – Winter Park is now open for dine-in, as well as mobile and online ordering for contactless curbside pick-up or delivery at firstwatch.olo.com or on the First Watch app.

Guest can dine in this week anytime from 7am – 2:30pm from Monday, 3/1 through Friday, 3/5 to receive a FREE cup of Project Sunrise Coffee, coffee made by widowed or orphaned female farmers in Colombia.  First Watch pays a premium to these female farmers, in addition to a quality incentive payment for those whose coffee exceeds its top-tier quality standards.

First Look: itsthepizzaslut by Kaleigh Gardner

0

Kaleigh Gardner is the founder of the pizza-loving-instagram-turned-pizzaiolo @itsthepizzaslut . She recently spoke with us about her background and her jump leaving behind her old job to make pizza full time.

Tasty Chomps – How did you find your love of pizza?

Kaleigh Gardner @itsthepizzaslut – Growing up in a household ran by two chefs on the beach in South Florida, I learned from a young age that food and cooking have always had my heart. When I was a kid my parents were always in the kitchen which meant a lot of fresh fish, steaks, crazy Italian, Irish recipes, and more. So we never really eat out very much and having pizza was a rarity for me (only on Fridays, if we were lucky).

From elementary to high school I remember sitting at lunches and I would trade my homemade subs with anyone who would swap me a slice of pizza in return.

After I graduated, I began traveling the world with the sole purpose of eating the best food and known dishes in each state or country, and began a food blog with my best friend because I truly loved sharing food with others but, the quest was ALWAYS, ALWAYS PIZZA.

And it wasn’t just, oh grab a slice and go, I wanted to see how they made their dough, and ask whoever was making the pizza or the owner what encouraged them to start making pizza or how they learned.

On a quick 24 hour trip to Manhattan, standing on 39th st., I had found myself 20 something pizza stops in … and it hit me, I was literally flying around, or “getting around” to every pizza shop that was named or known … I was, in fact, a PIZZA SLUT.

I had this fear I was gonna miss out on a slice or square, and I wanted to find the best one and tell everyone about it … I took out my phone and immediately changed my Instagram, @itsthepizzaslut.

Soon it was 5-day trips with things like hitting 7 different states and 64 pizza spots in 120 hours. I started attending Pizza festivals, attending and judging competitions, jumping behind the oven at spots that would allow me and events all over the world!

I was meeting pizza people from all over the world, some world champions, many Italians, and aspiring pizzaiolos. Anthony Falco, Tony Geminani, Chris Decker, Vincent Rotolo, Matt Hyland, Scott Weiner, Nicole Bean, and many more. Always watching very carefully and soaking up as much as I could like a sponge.

What made you want to start your own pizza company?

I’ve hit over 400 pizzerias in the country and counting, I always felt like something was missing. But eating the best pizzas all over the world, how could I compare and also if I ever made pizza, I wanted it to be the kind I loved the most to begin then master all doughs in the future.

Going into it with a different mindset, I thought I’ve learned from some of the best , why not put that into action… so I began my journey in making sourdough Neapolitan-ISH pizzas.

I bought one little Roccbox woodfired ovens and offered to make pizza for a few friends, they said it was good enough to buy, so I figured I’d try and sell it solely to share my love of pizza with the world.

My second popup resulted in selling out 63 sourdough pies in an hour and fifteen minutes at a little coffee shop in MT. DORA.

Soon I was finding popups at breweries, wine shops, and even coffee shops. Demand called for more ovens and it became three Roccboxes, more tables, more boxes, and bringing more like 130 dough to each pop-up! Selling out or getting very close to sell out each time! (Thank you Orlando & all my following pizza sluts) I was finally doing it! But I wanted it to be called more of a “Pizza PARTY!” I loved the sense of pop-ups because you can switch the menu to compliment each venue, or your always running into new people or your regular followers who are in the “KNOW” !

What are some pizzas you can find on the menu?

Although my signature pie which you can find every time, She likes it HOT” is a spicy pepperoni pizza with pickled chilies and mikes hot honey!

Some in the know pizza, for example, my “Flat White” pizza , which is fresh mozzarella, goat cheese, honey, lavender espresso pecorino, and brown butter breadcrumbs was made for Qreate Coffee Shop!

I love infusing pizza with things you wouldn’t naturally expect to taste good! My sourdough is a good base for lots of yummy ideas! Or one of my favorite Venues, Conrad Shanty’s has the “Thai ME UP” which is a spicy Thai chicken pizza with sprouts and chili oil! Or bringing Wally’s Bar and liquor store a special chicken alla vodka pizza! Or my French Dip ZA w/ side of JUS will only be brought out for special ones!! So you can almost always try a different pizza while finding me!

I think everyone knows I’m pizza obsessed but I do just want everyone I meet to love pizza as much as me, and enjoy my style and creativity!

Upcoming Plans?

My plans are to continue to pop-up around mostly Mills50 District, but also all around Orlando and maybe even the country at some point! I do know that I love making pizza and sharing my love for pizza is absolutely my calling.

Where can people find you?

So basically Instagram and Facebook will be all the location drops! Every Friday Saturday, and soon Sundays and Tuesdays!

After 27 years, First Watch Maitland location closing this Sunday 2/21, relocating to Winter Park , plus a Sneak Peek

First Watch in Maitland, after more than 27 years, will be flipping its final pancake this Sunday, February 21 at 2:30pm. The restaurant has been serving the Maitland community breakfast, brunch and lunch since 1993 and is a long-time favorite of local residents. The restaurant, along with most of the staff, will be relocating to a new location just down the road in Winter Park.

The move comes after the Maitland restaurant’s lease was nearing expiration and the decision was made to relocate to a nearby space in Winter Park that accommodates an updated design, outdoor patio and a bar.

The iconic Maitland art will be donated to a local church.

The new First Watch in Winter Park opens at 7am on Monday, March 1, and is a mile down the road from the Maitland restaurant at 140 Orlando Ave, across the street from Trader Joe’s.

The location – formerly Cinco Tacos and Carmel Cafe, just across from Trader Joe’s – will serve as a new flagship for First Watch in the region, featuring an expansive outdoor dining and lounge area and a new, separate dedicated to go and delivery entrance. The new flagship prototype restaurant will also offer First Watch’s crafted cocktail program that recently rolled out in locations across Central Florida.

Foodie’s Guide to Universal’s Mardi Gras 2021: International Flavors of Carnaval

Mardi Gras has officially returned to Universal Orlando Resort. Now through April 11**, guests are welcome to enjoy exciting entertainment and tasty bites inspired by Carnaval celebrations from around the world.

The festivities may look a bit different this year, but the food is just as delicious as ever. Traditional dishes are available to sample from New Orleans, Puerto Rico, Germany and many other regions. For $55, guests can purchase a Mardi Gras tasting lanyard good for 10 specialty food dishes or beverage samples. Annual passholders can also purchase an exclusive 15-item lanyard for $65. We recommend these lanyards in order to get the absolute best deal during your visit. They are particularly helpful if you plan on splitting the samples with a small group.

We were invited out by Universal to try 10 of the best food items the festival has to offer, and we were far from disappointed. Here is our Foodie’s Guide to Universal’s Mardi Gras 2021: International Flavors of Carnaval.

Foodie’s Guide to Universal’s Mardi Gras 2021: International Flavors of Carnaval

New Orleans, USA

Crawfish & Shrimp Boil, Beignets and Abita Purple Haze

It isn’t a Mardi Gras festival without some crawfish and beignets. We ordered the Crawfish & Shrimp boil, which was delectably seasoned and mixed with flavorful andouille sausage, red bliss potatoes and corn on the cob. As expected, the beignets were light, fluffy and delicious. We also ordered the Abita Purple Haze, which is a refreshing raspberry fruited lager. Together, this classic New Orleans combo was the perfect way to begin our Mardi Gras experience.

Other New Orleans food items available for purchase include the Crawfish Boil, Shrimp Boil, Jambalaya, Shrimp Gumbo, Etouffee, Twisted Taters, Andouille Twisted Taters and the Muffaletta Sandwich.

Puerto Rico

Picadillo Empanadas and Quesitos

Next up we stopped by the Puerto Rico booth, where we enjoyed a traditional picadillo empanada and quesito. The empanada was filled with the tastiest mix of ground beef, tomatoes, peppers and seasoning. The quesito was the ideal sweet treat, filled with guava and cream cheese. Both Puerto Rican pastries were delightfully flaky and cooked to perfection.

Pernil & Mofongo is another delicious option available at the Puerto Rico booth.

Germany

Pork Schnitzel Sliders and Bavarian Pretzel

At Germany, we tried the Pork Schnitzel Slider and the Bavarian Pretzel. The schnitzel slider was served on an adorably small pretzel bun with spicy mustard, braised red cabbage and gruyere cheese. The pretzel was large, warm and served with a tasty spicy mustard cheese sauce. Both were spectacular, and surprisingly filling for theme park bites.

You can also enjoy Bratwurst with Beer Braised Onions as well as a vegan Bratwurst option at Germany. While we didn’t have the chance to try any, the selection of German alcoholic beverages also looked impressive.

Bahamas

Jerk Jackfruit

If you cannot handle spicy, stay away from this dish! The Jerk Jackfruit at the Bahamas is a wonderful vegan bowl served with jerked marinated jack fruit, rice, peas, scotch bonnet salsa and a lime. We loved it, but it was definitely the spiciest food item we can recall ever ordering at a theme park, so beware.

A non-vegan option is also available with the Jerk Chicken dish at the Bahamas booth.

Belgium

Belgium Liege Waffles

This delicious Belgium classic features sweet liege waffles topped with strawberries, whipped cream, chocolate sauce and powdered sugar. It’s simple yet mouthwatering, and we highly recommend trying it if you’re looking for a tasty dessert during your Mardi Gras festivities.

Belgium also offers Brussels Frites with Roasted Garlic Veganaise, which is an excellent snack option.

Trinidad and Tobago

Pholourie

The last item we tried was the Pholourie at Trinidad and Tobago. This dish consists of deep fried spicy split pea dough, turmeric and curry powder. It’s served with either a side of tamarind chutney or powdered sugar. We went with the tamarind chutney, which provided just the right amount of sweet and sour flavor.

You can also find traditional Pineapple Trini Chow at the Trinidad and Tobago booth.

Other Must-Try Eats

Although we loved the 10 Mardi Gras dishes that we tried, there are still many more food items we look forward to tasting in the future. Here are some of the Mardi Gras bites we didn’t get a chance to try.

Brazil

  • Moqueca de Camarao: Shrimp coconut cream stew with white rice and sweet potato curls
  • Stuffed Coxinha: Pulled chicken fritters
  • Brigadeiros: Sweet chocolate treats made with condensed milk, cocoa powder, sprinkles and toasted peanuts

Canada

Colombia

  • Carnitas Arepas: Arepas filled with avocado, carnitas, mayonnaise, ketchup and cilantro

Cuba

France

  • Poached Pear Crème Brulee Crepe: Red wine poached pear, vanilla pastry cream, toasted almonds and caramel topped with crispy sugar

Italy

Universal Mardi Gras Tribute Store

The Mardi Gras Tribute Store features an exciting combination of theming, music and delicious bites. You’ll walk through different rooms showcasing the very best Mardi Gras has to offer, from jazz bands to pirates and even a mystical New Orleans cemetery.

In the final room, you can choose from an impressive assortment of themed treats like King Cakes and Vegan Skulls Brownies. While these items aren’t covered by the Mardi Gras tasting lanyards, we can confirm that they are definitely worth the purchase.

We are looking forward to our next trip over to Universal Orlando Resort, so we can taste even more Mardi Gras delights. To learn more about Mardi Gras 2021: International Flavors of Carnaval, go to UniversalOrlando.com.
