Breakfast with Santa at The Alfond Inn

Jolly Old St. Nick – Santa Claus – the patron saint of children everywhere, bringing gifts and merriment everywhere he goes. Who wouldn’t want to have breakfast with that guy?

We all know about The Hamilton Kitchen at The Alfond Inn, but did you know they also have a catering service on site? The team at The Alfond Inn decided to put on a Breakfast with Santa event this year just in time for the holidays – and for those family holiday postcard photos.

And after completely selling out their Dec. 9 Breakfast With Santa, the Alfond Inn at Rollins College in Winter Park added a second date for Breakfast With Santa on Dec. 16.

It’s a fun-filled family event that gives families an opportunity to take photos with Santa Claus while also enjoying a full breakfast buffet.

Plus, the event helps fund The Alfond Inn at Rollins College Scholars Program which awards Scholarships to deserving Rollins College Students. A great cause!

Full Breakfast Buffet with open seating included:

French Toast, Maple Syrup
Belgium Waffles, Bourbon Maple, Whipped Cream, Berries
Sausage, Egg and Cheese Strata
Scrambled Eggs
Ashville Breakfast Potatoes
Pecan Smoked Bacon
Spiral Glazed Ham carved by Chef
Fresh Fruit Platter
Greek Yogurt, Assorted Toppings
Assorted Danish, Breakfast Breads and Muffins
Hot Apple Cider, OJ, Grapefruit Juice, Tea, Coffee, Eggnog

It was our baby daughter’s very first time meeting Santa Claus so we weren’t quite sure what to expect. Her reactions were priceless.

Here are some of the scenes from our memorable Breakfast with Santa:

Croissants
Pecan Smoked Bacon

Ashville Breakfast Potatoes

French Toast
Honey ham

The Alfond Inn is located at 300 E. New England Ave., Winter Park.

First Look: Steak on Fire

We were invited to check out Steak on Fire located on Sand Lakes Road’s Restaurant Row, neighbors to Vines Grille & Wine Bar.

Steak on Fire is a Brazilian steakhouse that serves sandwiches and plates in a fast-casual environment.  It’s counter service, so you order at the register and they deliver your food to your table–but the food is of a sit-down restaurant quality.  They also offer complimentary guest Wi-Fi which came in very handy while we were waiting for our food to arrive.

Filet mignon with chimichurri sauce, roasted vegetables and potatoes.  Great flavors.  Every bite was perfectly seasoned.

Grilled shrimps with a delicious tartar sauce, roasted vegetables and potatoes.  It was the best grilled shrimp & tartar sauce that I’ve ever had!  So juicy and the flavors were on point.

Sofrito Latin Cafe

Mini Arepa, Tostones Sandwich and Cuban Sandwich

We were invited to a media event at Sofrito Latin Cafe, located just a few minutes from Disney Springs.  Sofrito Latin Cafe serves different Latin dishes from different regions.  Ordering takes place at the front counter and then they deliver it to your table.  Sofrito has a variety of board games, old hispanic books and free WiFi so you can hangout in the restaurant for a while.  They believe that their restaurant is not just a business; but rather a place where everyone can feel at home and belong.  The staff was very welcoming and accommodating.  The mini flour tequeños are my newest cheesy addiction.

Canvas Restaurant & Market – Lake Nona

STEAK FRITES – 8 oz oak grilled petite beef tender, French fries, garlic-herb butter, arugula salad & Tom Fruin’s stained glass house in the background.

We were invited to have lunch at the popular Canvas Restaurant & Market located in Lureate Park in Lake Nona.  The Canvas Restaurant menu features new American cuisine influenced by Florida’s Southern and Latin American roots.  Executive Chef Jason Bergeron focuses on seasonal and regional produce as well as an abundance of fresh, Florida seafood.  Our lunch was delicious and the service & ambiance was perfect.

The zen view from where I was sitting inside the restaurant.  My friend witnessed a bird swooping up a fish out of the lake while I was taking pictures around the restaurant.  Nature doesn’t get any better than that!

CALAMARI FRIES – buttermilk marinade, roasted red pepper aioli.  So good.

HABANERO GLAZED CHICKEN WINGS – clover honey, lime zest, garlic-buttermilk dipping sauce.  Thick and crispy.

LOBSTER ROLL –
mango dressing, buttered roll

Dragonfly Robata hosts Tokyo Soul

Dragonfly Robata hosted an encore seating of their Tokyo Soul dinner event on December 6-7, 2018. The event and dishes were inspired by street food classics born in Tokyo, and seasoned with the flavors of the deep South Southern Kitchen, making this dinner event unique to Dr. Phillips.

The event consists of a limited number of seats at a long table where you can sit with familiar friends as well as make new friends with others next to you.

This event consisted of a 6-course meal beginning with a Japanese Inspired Souse with braised daikon, carrot, scallion, and inari. This dish starts the event by warming your soul with brilliant flavors, which is great on a chilly night.

Family-Style Tempura Corn Fritters served with Shirasu shies and Japanese horseradish. The corn fritters are crispy with each bite and sweet from the corn. There are slight distinct notes of the horseradish, which is not overwhelming to the palate.

The corn fritters is served with a Sake cucumber Masu Box, which traditionally signals the wealth and generosity of the restaurant to the person who drinks from it. The sake itself is light, refreshing and floral.

The Beer Batter Spanish mackeral is served with Tsukemono and a house-made house sauce. This dish consists of a crispy batter with fish that has a soft texture and disintegrates in the mouth.

Sapporo-hibiscus shandy is paired with the mackeral and flavors resemble grapefruit seltzer.

The next dish is a 36 hour Sous-vide brisket served with potato salad, Jus and micro wasabi. The brisket is very soft, moist and falls apart easily. Flavors are fresh and delightful. However, not each dish is consistent in texture.

The Japanese whisky-tea cocktail is paired with the brisket. It tastes like sweet tea with intense honey flavors.

Dish number 5 is the Chef Choice Seasonal Omakase, which is Cajun crusted salmon sashimi and crawfish maki-roll photographed above. The Salmon is fresh with simple seasoning to bring out natural salmon notes. The Crawfish maki-roll has a sweet honey taste along with a crispy texture of the crawfish and softness of the rice coating.

This fresh seafood dish is paired with the Shochu-pomegranate cocktail, which is sweet and tart at the same time.

The final dish is the Honey Carrot Castella, which is a Japanese sponge cake, carrot ginger mousse, persimmon, and candied bacon. The sponge cake is dense and solid, but moist at the same time; there are notes of a unique taste thanks to the ginger and cinnamon. The persimmons seemed to be soaked or infuse with sweet ginger flavor. Paired with the dessert is the Umeshu (Plum) cocktail, which is sweet in flavor.

While waiting for the event to begin or for the next dish to roll out, feel free to ask for a drink menu. Photographed here is the Green Tea’s Knees cocktail, which consists of fig infused Jim Beam, matcha honey and yuzu. It is a delicious and strong drink that is sweetened just right.

For more information on Dragonfly Robata and their future events, pease visit their website.

Holiday Night of Lights at Rosen Hotels & Resorts

What are your plans for Christmas?

Every year, my family dines at one of the Rosen Hotels for their Christmas Day buffet and we take a picture with Mr. Rosen himself, pictured above.  It’s become a family tradition of ours ever since we met him during a Christmas Day buffet back in 2014 when he greeted our table and asked us how we were doing.  My mom immediately recognized him from reading about him in the papers and asked him if he was Mr. Rosen and he confirmed and allowed us to take a picture with him.  He’s seriously the best.

Life came back to a full circle when I was invited to attend Rosen Hotels & Resorts’ first-ever Holiday Night of Lights media event to preview what each hotel is doing for their Christmas Day buffet & holiday events this year.  The night started with all 50 bloggers and friends hopping onto a snazzy two-story bus (our “sleigh” for the night that was generously donated by City Sightseeing Tours Orlando) to visit all 7 Rosen properties and see their holiday lights, with delicious bites at each stop.

At Rosen Hotels, their attention to detail is always impeccable, nothing ever gets overlooked and the customer service is top-notch.  I am so looking forward to making it out to the Christmas Day buffet at one of the Rosen Hotels this year with my family.

First Stop – Clarion Inn Lake Buena Vista for chocolate peppermint mocktinis, Santa Claus mopolitan, crab cakes, caprese skewers, dunking donut station, sweets, and a tour of the beautiful Bella Vista event venue.

Second Stop – Rosen Inn Closest to Universal for a hibachi performance from the Shogun chefs (I wasn’t able to get a picture of them in action because they were super fast) and sushi & sake from the Sakura Bar.

Third Stop Rosen Inn International for “The Rosen Tree” lighting, cesar salad cups and sweet & spicy meatballs

Fourth Stop – Rosen Inn at Pointe Orlando for selfies with an elfie, chicken wellington, mushroom puff and Christmas cookie

Fifth Stop – Rosen Plaza – for a sneak preview of the upcoming Dec. 15 Iced Out! event (free to the public), an ice luge with a signature cocktails, fig & manchego lollipops, lobster corndogs and baby lamb chops prepared by Executive Chef Michael and team.

Sixth Stop – Rosen Centre – for a greeting by Christmas carolers, a real gingerbread house, Harry’s ropa vieja empanada, pineapple ceviche, strawberry cheesecake, pumpkin cheesecake, and drinks from Harry’s Poolside Bar & Grill

Seventh Stop – Rosen Shingle Creek for a sneak preview of the charity trees (which will be displayed in the hotel’s grand lobby) decorated by 24 local non-profits throughout Orlando, and a festive mix and mingle with the hotel and charity partners.

Thanks Mr. Rosen for hosting us in such a family way!

First Watch has spent close to four decades laying the groundwork for this cookbook that includes stories and recipes that span generations!  At First Watch, they begin each morning at the crack of dawn, slicing fresh fruits and vegetables, baking muffins and whipping up their French toast batter from scratch.  They are morning people.  And now, they’ve included some of their delicious recipes in this easy-to-follow cookbook with chapters including: First Watch Essentials, Eggs & Omelets, Toasts & Batters, Handhelds & Sandwiches, Bowls & Salads, Hashes & Skillets and Juices & Coffee.

“The cookbook guides our loyal customers through the First Watch way of using the freshest ingredients available, to create unique dishes – something that is practiced daily in our restaurants.” said Chris Tomasso, First Watch CEO.

Chef Shane Schaibly, First Watch’s corporate chef & vice president of culinary strategy (pictured above), has also included some helpful cooking tips in “Yeah, It’s Fresh”.

Fun fact: The Glass Knife gave away 365 pieces of cake on Saturday, November 10, 2018 to celebrate their one year anniversary.

The holiday season is upon us – and what better place to learn about all the traditions from around the world than at EPCOT’s International Festival of the Holidays?

From Nov. 18 through Dec. 30, Epcot brims with holiday magic, as guests will be able to sample international seasonal delicacies, delight in live entertainment, and enjoy festive decor. We were recently invited to a media preview of all the happenings – especially with the food and beverage aspect – for this year’s International Festival of the Holidays.

This year, savor seasonal food & beverage specialties at the expanded Holiday Kitchens, including holiday favorites such as yule log pastries and pastelon with plantains, and the new Holiday Cookie Stroll.

Also not to be missed – watch as Santa Claus, Papa Noel, and many other time-honored traditions are brought to life throughout World Showcase.

Here are some of the festivities guests will enjoy:

  • NEW! Holiday Cookie Stroll – Guests can enjoy World Showcase and purchase delicious cookies from cookie stroll locations. As they indulge in these sweet treats, they may collect stamps for each cookie. Guests who get five stamps will be rewarded with a complimentary “completer” cookie and a cold glass of milk! The Holiday Cookie Stroll can be completed at guests’ leisure, with the ability to bring the passport back until Dec. 30.
  • NEW! Tastes at Holiday Kitchens – Guests will savor some of the most delectable holiday dishes from across the globe at 12 specialty kitchens set around World Showcase. New items this year include black forest roulade with cherry whipped cream at the Bavaria Holiday Kitchen in the Germany pavilion and sofrito-marinated beef with sweet plantains and olives at the Feast of the Three Kings Holiday Kitchen. A brand-new kitchen this year, L’Chaim!, will feature traditional Jewish dishes such as pastrami on rye, chicken and matzo ball soup, egg cream and more.
  • Candlelight Processional – The story of Christmas is powerfully told by a celebrity narrator accompanied by a full choir and a 50-piece orchestra in a performance that inspires joy and holiday spirit. New narrators this year include Helen Hunt, Alfonso Ribeiro, Bart Millard and voice of Moana, Auli’i Cravalho. Returning favorites include Neil Patrick Harris, Whoopi Goldberg and voice of Ariel, Jodi Benson. This elegant showcase is performed three times nightly, and for the first time will be presented on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22.
  • Candlelight Processional Dining Packages – Guests can add more magic to their holiday celebrations with a delicious breakfast, lunch or dinner followed by reserved seating at a performance of the Candlelight Processional. Dining options include some of the tastiest restaurants in Epcot and the adjacent Disney’s BoardWalk Resort and Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts. To reserve Candlelight Dining Packages, guests can call (407) WDW-DINE.
  • Storytellers and Holiday Entertainment – Costumed performers will bring the traditions of their home countries to Epcot with holiday stories and music told around World Showcase, along with a variety of other international festive entertainment.
  • Chip ’n Dale’s Christmas Tree Spree – Guests will join these playful chipmunks on their quest to collect ornaments for their Christmas tree. Guests may purchase a map and stickers from select merchandise locations and then travel World Showcase hunting for ornaments. A surprise is in store for those who complete the hunt!
  • IllumiNations: Reflections of Earth – This nighttime spectacular of fireworks, special effects, flame torches and more includes a special holiday finale from Nov. 18 to Dec. 30. This will be the final holiday season for IllumiNations, as the show is currently scheduled to conclude at the end of summer 2019, with new thrills on World Showcase Lagoon set to debut immediately afterward.

We were invited to check out and taste the new Slapfish in Waterford Lakes Town Center (located in between the Regal Cinemas and LA Fitness) which just opened last month.   This Slapfish location is special because it is their first location in Florida.  The backstory of Slapfish is that they started off as a popular seafood food truck in California back in 2011 and now they operate 13 stores nationwide, with plans to open up in Arizona, Colorado, Washington D.C., Idaho, Nevada, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Texas, Utah,  Virginia, and overseas in London soon.

Slapfish – Waterford Lakes is a beautiful, clean, bright and airy establishment with plenty of extra outdoor seating.  The friendly and energetic area manager Joshua and his awesome team members took very good care of us.  We got to try a lot of their menu items and out of them all, my favorites were the traditional lobster roll & clobster grilled cheese, which were super fresh and rich in flavor.

7th annual Cows ‘n Cabs raises funds for After-School All-Stars & Elevate Orlando

Cows ‘n Cabs, one of Central Florida’s premiere culinary and philanthropic events, returned to 150 North New York Avenue in Winter Park’s Central Park West Meadow for its seventh year on Saturday, November 3 from 7 p.m. – 10 p.m.

More than 25 of Central Florida’s top chefs and restaurants showed up to serve some of their favorite dishes, making it a night full of delicious gourmet food and drink pairings.  Hosted by 4 Rivers Smokehouse founder John Rivers and ABC Fine Wine & Spirits’ David Larue, the open-air country-western themed event benefited two local non-profit organizations: After-School All-Stars and Elevate Orlando.

Over the last six years, Cows ‘n Cabs has donated more than $520,000 to local charities.
