First Look: Saltgrass Steak House in Lake Buena Vista

We were invited to check out the new Saltgrass Steak House in Lake Buena Vista (near the Orlando Vineland Premium Outlets) and we were very impressed with this Texas-based chain restaurant owned by Landry’s Inc.  We had a flawless steak dining experience and the service was second to none.  Our server was very friendly and down to earth, he actually started at the Saltgrass Steak House in Texas so he was very knowledgeable and his recommendations were spot on.  While I was ordering my Silverstar Porterhouse Steak I was about to upgrade it with sautéed mushrooms/onions toppings but our wonderful server stopped me in my tracks and suggested that I get an off the menu topping of crab meat/pepper flakes/scallions/lemon butter and I’m so glad he did because it really took my steak to the next level.

Fun fact: the owner of Landry’s Inc. also owns the Houston Rockets professional basketball team, a team that a few of my friends have played on, so it really doesn’t get any better than that!

Complimentary house bread

The “Range Rattlers” are sooo good and spicy!  I highly recommend these as your appetizers.  Shrimp, jack cheese and cilantro, wrapped in a jumbo jalapeño, then battered and fried and served with a side of ranch dressing.

The Wedge Salad was very satisfying.  The dressing was sweet and the lettuce was deliciously crisp.

My friend ordered the New York Strip with Creamy Peppercorn Sauce (our server’s #1 steak recommendation) with sautéed mushrooms, caramelized onions, herb butter with a side of herb rice.  He enjoyed his meal.

Sweet Potato Fries

Be sure to check out Saltgrass Steak House next time you are in the Lake Buena Vista area!

Oktoberfest at Yard House

We were recently hosted by Yard House for an exclusive tasting of their celebration of Oktoberfest now until Oct 28, 2018. This Oktoberfest, they’re serving a New American twist on some German favorites.

The Jumbo Bavarian Pretzel is a Traditional Bavarian pretzel paired with horseradish mustard and beer cheese sauce. Even the smallest section of the pretzel would make you believe it isn’t soft and chewy; however, you’d be mistaken because each bite of the entire pretzel is soft, chewy and delicious. If I could, I’d eat 10 pretzels a night.

I have found Heaven on Earth and it is disguised as a Double Pork Burger: served with white cheddar, arugula, red onion, tomato, bacon tomato jam, Dijon mustard on a pretzel bun. The pork is juicy, tender and full of flavors.

Another delicious dishes is the Chicken Schnitzel, which is a traditional schnitzel chicken served with a side of ripped potatoes and Brussels sprouts topped with malt vinegar aioli. The chicken is nice and crispy, while the vegetables are seasoned to perfection. They must have heard I love Brussels sprouts because they brought out plenty for me to enjoy. Good news for me is how these Brussels sprouts can be enjoyed year round at Yard House.

Not only the Brussels sprouts are enjoyed year round, but so is the Poke Nachos full of flavor and fresh ingredients on house-made wonton chips.

To finish off, we tasted 3 different desserts in a mini trio sampler. Although they were associated with words like “mini” and “sampler,” there’s nothing small about the portions provided.

The Chocolate Soufflé Cake is like a lava cake that is rich in dark chocolate and topped with vanilla ice cream.

Cheesecake Brûlée comes out looking like flan, but tastes like a delightful cheesecake with crisp sugar like a creme brûlée.

Last, but not least is the Peach Apple Cobbler that was my favorite out of the three desserts we tried. It may be the Southern girl in me, but I can never deny a warm cobbler served with ice cream!

Yard House boasts the world’s largest selection of draft beer, and this Oktoberfest, the restaurant is pouring a number of extra beers.

  • Sam Adams Octoberfest: A blend of rich malts for a hearty, smooth flavor with notes of caramel creating a brew that’s perfect for the season
  • Weihenstephan Festbier: This Festbier produced by the world’s oldest continuously operating brewery has a rich body with a balanced finish and represents the Bavarian way of celebrating
  • Ayinger Oktoberfest: A beer with a deep golden color tinted with amber, lightly sweet with a malty nose balanced with floral hops
  • Paulaner Oktoberfest Wiesn: This German beer has a deep golden color and is full-bodied from Munich and Pilsner malts with a balanced fragrance of hops
  • Goose Island Oktoberfest: A bold American take on the German style, this beer provides a dry, malty body with notes of toffee and burnt sugar

After our tasting, we were able to go upstairs and check out the amazing keg room that overlooks the dining area. How does this look? Amazing, right?

If beer isn’t your fancy, check out some cocktails like this one that changes color when adding some agave to a tequila cocktail.

The Swan and Dolphin Food & Wine Classic offers guests unlimited tastings at more than 70 stations featuring culinary selections from the hotel’s award-winning restaurants and wine from more than 30 wineries amidst a festive backdrop of live entertainment on the hotel’s scenic causeway. New to the event this year is The Pig and the Poke, a luau-themed area serving Kalua pork, tuna poke and shaved ice. Upgraded ticket options allow guests to enjoy access to a beer garden featuring a wide selection of craft beers and Oktoberfest-inspired cuisine. Football Season brings Football Features to Duffy’s

Duffy’s Sports Grill welcomes you to try their new features this football season as you cheer on your favorite team to win with your family and friends!

Share some loaded nachos with Nachos, Seven Ways to Sunday with housemate corn tortilla chips topped with slow simmered black beans, creamy white queso, pico de gallo, cilantro-onion relish, locally grown jalapeños, sour cream, fresh guacamole, and your choice of protein. The price varies by protein. For us, we picked the seasoned ground beef, which was slightly more salty than I’d like, but this dish is great to share with friends or a party of one.

After a plate of nachos, try the Smokey Brisket Burger Melt which is served with a side of french fries. This dish is tender and filled with flavor. It has to be my favorite of all the football features. However, I do wish it was a bit more moist.

The Lobster Roll is a taste of New England bites made with fresh lobster and it is served cold. Have a taste with some fries or coleslaw.

Maybe you’re not a brisket or lobster person. How about a beef hotdog? Duffy’s Sports Grill offers the Frito Dog, which is a chargrilled, all natural, uncured beef hotdog served with Duffy’s signature chili, cheddar jack cheese, onion, signature sauce, and Fritos. I’m a sucker for hotdogs and this is a different twist. It was definitely a mouthful.

Don’t forget to wash down the delicious bites with some cocktails! Here, we have the Pineapple Martini and Gummy Bear Martini. Both were made well.

2nd Harvest Food Bank – Chefs Night- Wine Cheese and Chocolate

0

It was Chefs Night at 2nd Harvest Food Bank where everyone indulged in Wine, Cheese and Chocolate. Guests entered the in the main area where there was a choice of wine, beer and appetizers. The wines to choose from was Quantum Leap’s Pinot Grigio and Pedaler’s Hard Cider.

One of the passed appetizers was a butter toasted Olde Hearth Baguette with Goat Cheese and white chocolate whip topped with chopped strawberries with basil and white chocolate drizzle.

The Mini Tacos had two versions. One had Grilled Chicken Mole with Roasted Corn & Poblano Salsa, Prairie Breeze Cheddar and Micro Cilantro. The other had Black Bean Mole with Jicima, Roasted Corn & Poblano Pepper Salsa, Prairie Breeze Cheddar, Pickled Shallots and Micro Cilantro.

After the starters, we were moved to tables for a salad, entree and dessert. The salad was Butter Lettuce with Roasted Butternut Squash, Meredith Dairy Sheep & Goat Feta, Milk Chocolate Cashew Brittle. Dressed with Apricot and Mermaid’s Gold White Port vinaigrette made with Second Harvest Honey for Good. The dish was served with a glass of Quantum Leap’s Tramonto Sul Lago.

Once the salad was served, we moved to the entree. This dish consisted of Lineage Coffee Rubbed Filet Mignon, with Quantum Leap’s Winemaker’s Cuvee & Dark Chocolate Reduction with Bing Cherries. Served with Smokey Blue Gratin with caramelized onions, Balsamic Glazed Rainbow Carrots tossed with Cocoa Brown Butter and topped with a 36 Month Parmigiano Reggiano. This was served with Quantum Leap’s Winemakers Cuvee.

The night ended with a brilliant dessert , which was Peterbrooke Chocolatier of Winter Park’s Award Winning Ultimate Dark Chocolate Brownie with Gjetost Fondue. Quantum Leap’s Kaley’s Rescue Red was the wine paired with this.

This night was made possible by The Tasty Trio. They are three deliciously experienced food and wine experts by the names of Tonda Corrente, owner of La Femme du Fromage, Lisa Wilk, founder of Orlando Uncorked, and Jill Ramsier, co-owner of Quantum Leap Winery.  This was a 4-Course Dinner journey where Wine, Cheese and Chocolate were featured in every course.

Dining in the Dark with Orlando Police Department SWAT Team – Recap

Dining in the Dark is a Lighthouse Central Florida original that has grown in scale and popularity since it was first introduced in 2010.  Attendees are treated to a multi-course, gourmet meal prepared by celebrated, local chefs and are served by members of the Orlando Police Department’s SWAT team — who navigate the pitch-black room outfitted in night-vision goggles.  After dinner the lights slowly come up and diners are encouraged to offer telling, empathetic, testimonials about their experience.  Featured menu selections were from Muddy Waters Orlando, B&A Catering, Oudom Thai & Sushi, Soco Thornton Park & Wildtree.

My thoughts:  The event was well-organized and the guest servers from Orlando Police Department SWAT team were all focused and treated us with genuine respect and humility.  I have never experienced service like that before in my entire life.  They have all inspired me to become a better person and I am grateful to have these wonderful men as role models for our community.  I never got the name of my guest server, maybe because he did not want to make it about him, but I trusted him and felt safe with him taking care of our table.  As a naturally quiet & independent person, it was eye-opening, literally, to experience how important communication is when one of your five senses, sight, is taken away from you.

3 hours later, after the lights were turned back on, I felt humbled and empathetic towards those who live with blindness or any degree of vision impairment everyday.   It was definitely the most humbling experience in my entire life.

I couldn’t tell you what we ate (they all tasted delicious, by the way) but I do know one thing that’s for sure.  I have nothing bad to say about the service and I believe that everyone should experience the Dining in the Dark dinner at least once in their lives if they want to be truly humbled.

Thank you Reggie Timones for being my last minute plus one!

These leftover desserts were the only dishes that I got to actually see.

All the lights were turned back on so that guests can share testimonies about their Dining in the Dark experience.

Thank you chefs for preparing such delicious creations for a wonderful cause!

Magical Dining Month Featuring K Restaurant

K Restaurant invited us to taste a sample menu of what you can expect to receive during Visit Orlando’s Magical Dining Month. Here is a look at the menu we got to try.

The evening began with three appetizers. The first on the list was Deviled Eggs. It contains mustard egg yolk, tomato jam, bacon lardons and herbs.

We then moved onto Crispy Brussels Sprouts containing hot sauce honey, bacon lardons and herbs.

The last appetizer was Duck Liver Mousse. On it was seasonal accompaniments, grilled chiabatta bread and herbs. This item is not always served on the menu.

Just like the appetizers, we were served three entrees. We hit the ground running with Eggplant Parmesan as the first entree served. It contained panko breaded eggplant, tomato and eggplant ragu, fresh mozzarella, parmesan cheese and basil.

Afterward, the Seasonal Fish was served. It was a fresh serving of Cobia fish. According to the restaurant, they caught it the previous day at New Smyrna Beach. The fish was plated with vegetable risotto, herb butter and micro green salad.

The very last entree was called Pork Porterhouse. It had creamy polenta, seasonal vegetables, and cider barbecue sauce.

Afterward, we were served three desserts – Chocolate torte, Chefs Choice Cheese Cake (seasonal)and French Toast Bread Pudding.

Shown below is the Chocolate torte with salted caramel buttercream. It is actually flourless (gluten free)!

Next up was the Chefs Choice Cheese cake. The cake is seasonal and does vary. Our cheese cake had more of a chocolate base and was very delicious.

We also got to taste this amazing French Toast Bread Pudding. It had pecan streusel, cinnamon maple glaze, and vanilla ice cream.

K Restaurants Executive Chef, Chad Phelps says, “I ate here during magical dinning month several years ago and enjoyed it and came back on and off throughout the years and eventually bought it when I heard the restaurant was for sale.”

As for how the menu is put together, it depends on what’s growing locally and what’s available. Phelps’ favorite menu item is the pork chops. He also has a liking for the brussels sprouts. After being fried, they are tossed in honey and sriracha sauce. The restaurant is well known for them.

Magical Dining Month continues now through September 30! Make sure to check this place out. In addition, one dollar from each meal goes towards Best Buddies and Down Syndrome Association of Central Florida through Visit Orlando.

K Restaurant is located on 1710 Edgewater Dr, Orlando, FL 32804. You can also check them out on their website at https://www.krestaurant.net/

Tapa Toro: Chef Frank Galeano’s Tasting Menu

Absolutely outstanding experience last night at Tapa Toro. Chef Frank Galeano, who is set to take on the executive chef position at Tapa Toro on the month of October, 2018  and I had been talking about doing something like this for a small group of people for a while until we finally pulled the trigger and finalized the details about 2 weeks ago. The goal was to have a fun tasting menu in a casual setting and let the creativity and talent run free but most important of all to have a great time. Chef Frank was truly thrilled and enthusiastic about doing this dinner and it showed all throughout the night. I think I speak for all us who attended the dinner that every single dish was just Fantastic. The play of different flavors profiles and cultural influences on the dishes were super well balanced and beautifully harmonized.

The first Dish was the perfect one to awaken the palate followed by the incredibly delicious Veggie dish which was of my personal favorites, those two dishes were key to set the rest of the fantastic dinner going forward. The Marinated Foie, Lobster, Octopus, Uni, Duck, Aged Ribeye with Cured Jamón Ibérico Lard and last but not least the excellent dessert made by Chef @Lucy Champeaux was the perfect ending.

It is evident that our local talent is scattered all over the city and International Drive and possibly other areas that carry the same touristy stigma are not always talent-deprived

The meal I had last night was EASILY one of the best meals I’ve ever had in Orlando. You just never know where you gonna find your next great meal, ironically, I found it in one of the areas I avoid the most.

If any of you fellow foodies ever want to do something like this, please do not hesitate to contact Frank or Wendy and they will be happy to set something up for you that will suit your taste and budget, in fact they were encouraging us to request special dinners as they love to do it and it gives them the opportunity to be creative and do what Chefs love to do.

I’m looking forward to do this again at Tapa Toro and also with Different Chefs around town that are willing to do this kind of stuff. Already in the talks with a few of our favorites restaurants in town to possibly do another tasting.

Special thanks to all my guests for Joining me basically blindfolded as none of us knew what we were in for and  of course Tapa Toro for the Hospitality and incredible dinner.

First Look: Plant Street Food Tour in Winter Garden

Plant Street Food Tour Owners & Experience Guides, Matt Kent & Alyssa Hostetler are all smiles at The Whole Enchilada’s one-of-a-kind rooftop bar.

Launched in August, Plant Street Food Tour is a new walking food tour owned by Matt Kent & Alyssa Hostetler, a Winter Garden couple who are passionate about showing off the culinary scene on Plant Street in Historic Winter Garden.  They have hired their friends as Experience Guides, all of whom are foodies and entertainment professionals from the theme park and theater market in Orlando!  The food tour lasts from 90 mins to 2 hours and consists of taking a brisk walk down historic Plant Street with many tasty stops along the way, sampling delicious food and drinks from a variety of restaurants while learning some surprising history about downtown Winter Garden and their many small businesses.

Plant Street Food Tour offers 5 different food tours: Mornin’ Sunshine Brunch Tour, The Flavorhood Tour (the tour that I got to experience), Booze & Brews, A Sweet Treat, Date Night, or you can customize your food tour to your specific tastes and group size, making it perfect for any special occasion.

Prices start at $30 per person, but you can save $5 on any tour by using promo code CHOMP5 at checkout on plantstreetfoodtours.com

We began our tour by meeting at the Citrus Fountain on the intersection of South Boyd St and Plant Street.  Fun fact:  The spot where the Citrus Fountain is located was once a railroad track used to ship oranges.

First stop: Chef’s Table at the historic Edgewater Hotel

Duck fat fries with aioli from Chef’s Table was the first dish on our food tour.  I could not stop eating them, they were seriously addicting!  I wanted to eat all of it in one sitting but Matt let know me to save room for the other culinary delights that were remaining on our food tour so I took a few bites and packed the rest of the fries in a to-go box.  I am glad that Matt warned me because I was full by the end of our 2 hour food tour.

Everything is made from scratch at Chef’s Table.  Pictured: Mini beef wellington.

After dinner, we got to meet the manager at Chef’s Table, Matt Womick.

The cuban sandwich from Savoree were sooo good!  It was the best cuban sandwich that I’ve ever had!

The pastry selection at Axum Coffee.

Snickers iced coffee from Axum Coffee, it was good.  This coffee shop gives away all of their profits to a variety of charities.

Hasselhoff tacos and skrimp tacos (yum!) from The Whole Enchilada.  I loved the ambiance of their rooftop bar, I would have not known about this rooftop bar had it not been for the food tour.  I am so grateful and I am excited to share this restaurant with my friends.

A Gatsby Evening at The Edison

0

“Celebrate Labor Day by getting all dolled up in your flapper attire, jazzed up in your 1920’s style suits and dance the night away. From the moment you step on the red carpet and enter the opulent party setting, be prepared to be entertained. From flairtenders serving swanky spirits, flying aerial champagne performers, flapper dancers, cigar rollers, live band, stilt walkers and more, you will be dazzled till the end.”

A Gatsby Evening at the Edison located in Disney Spring was a homage to the classic, to the vintage, and to the debonair. The Edison with its steampunk setting that was a backdrop for a roaring party that celebrated all the great things of the 1920s from Flapper dancers to its classic cocktails.

The cocktails for A Gatsby Evening were unique and offered a taste of classic cocktails that even Jay Gatsby would serve them at his soirees.

Fried Calamari and Lighting Shrimp

The Edison Burger

Black Cherry Cream Shake

If you are ever at Disney Springs do not pass up a chance to sample some great cocktails and tasty morsels.

7th Great Irish Hooley Music Festival at Raglan Road 2018

This weekend, Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant in Disney Springs celebrated their 7th Great Irish Hooley Music Festival, featuring a colorful live playlist of traditional Irish, Celt grass, folk, blues and soul as well as food and drink.

Many of the new dishes featured “Wild About Ireland” products like Chutneys and dressings, similar to our “Fresh from Florida” labels which help promote “from” Ireland food products.

We were invited for a preview of some of the new dishes on the menu, as well as listen to the very talented Lisa Canny, 7-time All-Ireland champion on harp and banjo, and an emerging Irish force blending pop and hip-hop with traditional Irish rhythms.

The festival runs from Friday August 31 through Monday September 3rd (Labor Day weekend).

Here are some scenes from the event:

Chick n Pea Skewer – a play on chickpeas with chicken (spicy) grilled with rosemary that reminded me a bit of tandoori chicken, and a lovely fried potato ball topped with crispy toasted chickpeas!

The Pork Blah Blaa – shaved pork porchetta, Wild about Celtic chutney, caramelized onions, and crispy crackling chicarrones.

Lusty Lobster – a kind of fun play on avocado toast and lobster rolls – lobster with avocado, egg, mayo, pancetta, and watercress on a multigrain roll

The Chunk Monk featuring beer battered monkfish (the poor man’s lobster) and fried zucchini chips and tartar sauce

Wild about Wild – wild mushroom and fried goat cheese terrene with quinoa, purple beets

Super Cauli Caponata Tasty N Delicious – spiced curried cauliflower, eggplant caponata, with lentil and pumpkin seed dressing.

Stewbaa – braised lamb with root vegetables and herb dumplings

Bangin Bangers and Mighty Mash – guiness and onion bangers, mashed potatoes, onion gravy

Pumpkin Creme Brulee Tart

PRESS RELEASE:

7th Annual ‘Great Irish Hooley’ Music Festival Rocks Labor Day Weekend at Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant in Disney Springs

Central Florida’s high-voltage boutique Irish music festival serves up a colorful live playlist of traditional Irish, Celt grass, folk, blues and soul Aug. 31-Sept. 3 during the 7th Great Irish Hooley at Raglan Road Irish Pub & Restaurant in Disney Springs.

Celebrating Irish song, dance, food and drink over the long Labor Day weekend, the Great Irish Hooley kicked off performances by nine Irish bands and the new Raglan Road Irish Dance Troupe beginning at 3 p.m. Friday, August 31, and continuing all day Saturday through late Monday, Sept. 3, and into the wee hours.

Paired with Orlando’s finest contemporary Irish cuisine, local and national craft beers, new hand-crafted cocktails featuring Wild Irish syrups and day-into-night entertainment, the Great Irish Hooley promises a high-energy music festival for families and revelers alike.

A traditional Irish social celebration, the “Hooley” combines music ranging from trad to rock tunes with entertainment and fun for the whole family (no cover charge). The Hooley also will feature Celtic face-painting throughout the festival. This year’s Hooley entertainment headliners include:

JigJam — The multi-award-winning Irish quartet will bring their captivating brand of “CeltGrass” (a.k.a. I-Grass) – blending the best of traditional Irish music with Bluegrass and Americana. (Friday through Monday)

Lisa Canny – The outrageously talented Lisa Canny, 7-time All-Ireland champion on harp and banjo, is an emerging Irish force blending pop and hip-hop with traditional Irish rhythms. (Saturday through Monday)

Billow Wood – Known as Flat Out when they played Raglan Road in 2016, this male/female four-piece band fuses their unique brand of instrumentation with multi-vocals and harmonies for a blend of Irish and folk music. (Monday)

The Raglan Road Irish Dancers, plucked from the casts and stages of the world’s greatest Irish dance shows, will perform throughout the Great Irish Hooley. And champion Irish dancer Ciaran Keating, Raglan Road’s show choreographer, will host an entertaining workshop that traces the origins of Irish dance from earliest jigs and reels through contemporary times.

Additional music acts throughout the long weekend will include:

Strings & Things — Strings & Things are an original Irish folk/trad crossover four-piece band from Tipperary/Galway. Over the years together they have created their own original sound and produced a variety of crossover songs by putting their own stamp on them.

They are Luca, 13 (button accordion); Finn, 11 (banjo, mandolin and whistle); Dempsey, 8, (whistle and bodhran); and father, Tommy (guitar, Uilleann pipes, fiddle, whistles, bagpipes and bodhran). Their show combines traditional Irish tunes with modern dance beats, and they love to interact with every audience.

Reel Republic –- Hailing from the southwest corner of Ireland, Reel Republic are four seriously talented musicians revving up audiences with a solid spectrum of Irish tunes and songs.

TradGad – Three talented lads from Kerry, Dublin and Edinburgh charm Raglan Road audiences singing and playing guitar, fiddle, mandolin, uileann pipes, tin whistle, banjo and bazouki.

High Road – Three talented musicians hailing from Dublin, Kilkenny and Glasgow meet in the middle to play a crowd-pleasing symphony of traditional Irish tunes and songs.
