First Watch Temporarily Closes All Company-Owned Restaurants Starting 4/13/2020 Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

For the health and safety of First Watch’s restaurant operators, they have made the decision to temporarily close the doors to all of company-owned First Watch restaurants, beginning Monday, April 13. This will help to greatly reduce their risk of exposure to this virus and will allow them to focus on their families as well as their mental and physical health.

Letter from First Watch’s CEO Chris Tomasso: https://www.firstwatch.com/a-message-from-our-ceo/

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. You have come out in droves to support your local First Watch and every dedicated manager who’s been working long hours to ensure we were putting food on your table, and theirs. Throughout these past few weeks of trials and tragedy, through sleepless nights worrying about our people and their families, through daily calls with our leadership team to discuss countless scenarios and make nearly impossible decisions, I’ve seen the best in people.

I’m grateful. Grateful for each one of our people who wears the First Watch brand logo proudly on a polo, chef coat, hat or jacket. Grateful for every person who’s called, ordered brunch on our website or through one of our delivery partners, showed love and support for our incredible teams on social media, purchased a cookbook or a gift card… Grateful for our Home Office team who’s worked tirelessly to support our restaurants and the people within them.

For 37 years, First Watch has operated around one core principle: You First. It’s a simple concept that speaks volumes to us – Our people are our most important asset, and their physical safety and health, as well as their mental wellbeing, are always our priority. I carry that responsibility, and it is not something I take lightly.

Therefore, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close 100% of our company-owned restaurants beginning Monday, April 13, 2020.

Our priority while our doors are closed will remain the protection of our people. We are committed to continuing our restaurant managers’ existing healthcare benefits, and First Watch will cover 100% of out-of-pocket costs, co-pays and deductibles for any medical visits related to Covid-19. We’ve also invested in telemedicine benefits for every First Watch employee and their family, at no cost to them, so all have access to medical professionals who can diagnose, authorize testing and even prescribe medications. Finally, we have committed to making our restaurant managers financially whole by providing a bonus upon their return to work to close the gap between the federal and state benefits they received and their First Watch salary. These benefits are being funded in part by significant cost reductions and senior leadership pay cuts through 2020, to ensure the security and longevity of our restaurant teams.

When we emerge from this event, we will do so stronger, and we cannot wait to bring our entire First Watch family back together to serve you when we open our doors once again.

I wish you and your loved ones the utmost health and safety during these times.

We’ll see you soon.

Chris Tomasso

Dalgona Whipped Coffee Recipe – Popular Viral Food Trend during Coronavirus Lockdown

0

With the current coronavirus pandemic and subsequent quarantine / lockdown situation, people may be finding a lot of time on their hands right now. Why not whisk up some of the latest viral food trend – the Dalgona Whipped Coffee, made popular on social media by South Korean vloggers and the video app Tik Tok.

Dalgona is the name for a Korean toffee candy, brown-sugar-colored and cloud-like and the drink itself is similar to Indian beaten coffee or Greek frappe coffee. This is a super simple recipe that calls for just three ingredients – equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water – whisked – over hot or cold milk. That’s it. Super easy.

Use a hand mixer to speed up the process, or a hand whisk if you have 20 minutes and want to develop powerful arms.

Ingredients
2 tablespoons instant coffee
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons hot water
1 cup milk – substitute with oat or other plant-based milk to make this recipe vegan friendly
Optional – dash of cinnamon, cocoa powder, or honey as toppings

Utensils
Hand mixer or hand whisk

Instructions
1. Add the instant coffee, sugar, and hot water in a mixing bowl
2. Whip the mixture until creamy and thick (ranges from 2 minutes by hand mixer to 20 minutes if by hand whisk)
3. Add dollops of the whipped Dalgona coffee on top of a glass of your desired milk
4. Sprinkle with cinnamon, cocoa powder, or honey as toppings if desired
5. Snap a photo to share on social media with hashtag #dalgonacoffeechallenge
6. Stir and enjoy

#OrlandoToGo – Inside Look of Butter Bliss Bakeshop Including Secret Menu Items

Butter Bliss Bakeshop is owned and operated by Baker Lisa Vasquez in our local city we love so much. We were honored to try a few of her favorites, popular items mentioned by her customers as well as secret menu items while we’re in lockdown.

The Classic Brownie is a soft and cloud-like brownie made with melted chocolate for a real classic taste. If you add a drizzle of warm caramel on top and have it with a glass of warm milk, you’d be golden.

The Bacon Cheddar Chive Scone is a savory exclusive item that you cannot find on the menu. It is made with real bacon, chopped fresh chives, and shredded mild cheddar cheese. I hear it is everything you could want in a savory breakfast scone. Lisa suggests to warm in an oven for a few minutes for the maximum level of enjoyment when taking bites into the scone.

Another secret menu item is the Espresso Chocolate Chip Scone. Some new items may include one of the secret menu items whether it be scones or a savory item. This sweet espresso chocolate chip scone is made with freshly brewed Cafe Bustelo espresso, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and drizzled in a Maple Butter glaze. It is a perfect item to kick start your day with the amazing espresso brew and sweetness of the chocolate and maple butter glaze. However, with this pandemic messing up my sleep schedule, I can eat this caffeinated item all day.

A popular item of our community is the Chocolate Chip Cookie. It is a brown sugar cookie with golden crispiness on the outside.

The Blueberry Lime Ricotta Mini Loaf is a very moist cake, with lime zest, lime juice and fresh blueberries mixed in the batter. It is covered in a lime glaze and can be enjoyed warm or cold, dessert or breakfast. What makes this mini loaf so moist? It’s the ricotta Lisa adds to the recipe to make it what it is. This item was my mom’s favorite. She loves how it is more tart than sweet.

For more information, please visit Butter Bliss Bakeshop to order yourself a box as well as plan for your visit once this lockdown is over. Also, keep an eye out for one of our Tasty Chomps posts with a private interview with Owner/Baker Lisa Vasquez.

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Soco – Thornton Park

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers.  The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.

With the statewide ban on in-house dining, downtown Orlando’s Soco – Thornton Park has transitioned to new takeaway menus.

They are also offering a brunch takeaway menu every Saturday & Sunday from 10:30am to 3pm, followed by their regular takeaway menu afterwords till 8:30pm.

Both takeaway menus features Southern contemporary cuisine with a progressive culinary approach under the direction of award-winning Executive Chef/Partner Greg Richie.

Executive Chef/Partner Greg Richie

Guest can place a curbside takeout order by calling the store at (407) 849-1800 or by walking to the restaurant and placing their order with a staff member outside at the takeout booth.  Delivery is available as well.

We had the opportunity to experience this new curbside walk-up service and we were enjoyed the convenience of it as well as the taste and quality of our takeout order.

Extra Crispy KFC Chicken – Pickled Radishes, Benne Seeds, Sweet And Spicy Sauce. The glazed crispy skin will give you something to drool over.

Shrimp And Anson Mills Grits – Fried Okra, Fermented Peppers, Bacon-Tomato Emulsion.  I have had this dish before and it is still the best shrimp and grits that I have ever had.  It is innovative and it had a nice kick to it which I enjoyed.

Pecan Crusted Florida Snapper – Jupiter Rice, Shrimp Hush Puppies, Lemon Butter Sauce.  A delicious, tender seafood dish.

Buttermilk Biscuits – Served With House-Made Butter And Preserves.  They were delightful and I enjoyed how the soft buttery crumbles just melted in my mouth with every bite.  Highly recommended!

Quinoa, Bacon, Avocado And Watercress Salad – Toasted Sunflower Seeds, Coriander-Chili Emulsion.  This was one of the best salads that I have ever had and it will never be forgotten.  It was surprising, wholesome, refreshing and well blended.

Cornmeal Fried Okra – Served With Buttermilk Ranch Dipping Sauce.  It was crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside which made it uniquely satisfying.

Overall, it was a great Southern comfort meal that had the right amount of variety.

Be sure to visit Soco for some delicious Southern comfort takeout!

Crave Bakehouse Brings Donuts into Your Keto, Paleo, & Gluten Free Lifestyles

Crave Bakehouse has a simple philosophy of “Quiet your cravings. Feed your wellness.” They strive to satisfy every human’s desire for ‘sweet and bready’ minus the high glycemic flours and sugar. Not feeling deprived keeps you committed to a life of good health. We can get on board with that, especially during times of quarantine creating such anxiety in most of us!

The Crave Bakehouse family is passionate about creating authenticity in flavor and texture to truly satisfied you with each bite instead of searching for the next treat. All of their products are prepared with the best intentions and ingredients that let you indulge without slowing you down. The donuts are made with organic coconut flour, organic coconut oil, eggs, and a high grade stevia/erythritol blend for sweetening.

The first item I tried was their Cinnamon Sugar and it reminds me of a healthy version of a cinnamon Auntie Anne’s pretzel when I was younger. My mom always ordered the cinnamon sugar pretzels. With that being said, it was definitely my mom’s favorite donut when she tried these. I’m surprised she only ate half the first sitting, but that’s because she’s saving the other half for the next morning to eat with her coffee.

Their Lemon Poppy Crumble is quite refreshing with each bite. It has 3 net carbs, yet no added sugars. This is so refreshing and quenched my cravings for a zesty lemonade.

This Double Chocolate Chip is thus far my favorite! I popped this bad boy into the microwave and heated it up for 10 seconds for a warm, chocolatey hug. I wish I had an unlimited supply of this donut popping out of the oven like cookies popped out of Santa’s sled in the Santa Clause 2 movie. And with a mug of hot chocolate or milk in general.

Let me introduce you to the Maca Pecan. For this donut, they use Maca powder to add delectable flavors to the donut and has many health benefits, which you can google for more information. It creates a sweet and nutty taste with notes of butterscotch. I wish I could’ve tried it, but my dad inhaled this faster than I could say Maca Pecan.

The Piña Colada is unique in every way from scent to taste. I’d recommend having one with a piña colada drink. With the quarantine, what’s stopping you from having it and the drink any time of the day or any day of the week?

This is the Limade with a green stripe made by spinach powder. This is another zesty donut on their menu. This instance, it’s like having a margarita in donut form… Without the salt and tequila. I guess that’s still ok because the donut is still delicious without any tequila.

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Stefano’s Trattoria – Oviedo

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers.  The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.

Therefore the popular Italian restaurant in Oviedo/Winter Springs, Stefano’s Trattoria, is now offering takeout while complying to social distancing guidelines.

With the full menu available, there a few different options for ordering.  Guest can place an order directly from the restaurant’s website, by calling the store at (407) 659-0101, or by walking into the restaurant and placing their order with a staff member.

Once the order has been placed, guest can pick up their delicious food directly in store or have it brought out to their car for a quick and easy contactless pick-up.

Delivery is available as well.

We had the opportunity to experience this new curbside service and we were highly impressed with convenience of it as well as the taste and quality of our takeout order.  The passionate team at Stefano’s Trattoria is dedicated to serving homestyle comfort Italian food using only the best ingredients and it is pretty evident once you have tasted their excellent food.

Calamari Fritti

Flour battered deep fried seasoned squid garnished with lemon and parsley and served with marinara dipping sauce.  It was fresh and perfectly crisp.

Tortellini Alla Panna

Tortellini pasta sautéed in homemade cream sauce with prosciutto.

Wow, what an amazing dish.  If I had to recommend only one item out of their whole menu, it would be this one.  Order the Tortellini Alla Panna and thank me later.

Tortellini Di Stefano
This dish is very similar to dish above.  They use tortellini pasta with a touch of prosciutto but cook then it in a creamy meat sauce, baked and topped with provolone cheese.

Overall, I highly recommend Stefano’s Trattoria.  Add them to your takeout rotation and enjoy delicious Italian food from the comfort of your own home today.

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Delaney’s Tavern – SoDo District

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers.  The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.  Patrons can order alcoholic beverages to go with food either through pick-up or delivery with valid identification.

Delaney’s Tavern current special: $4 import, $3 domestic, $22 six-pack import.

Delaney’s Tavern at The Delaney Hotel, located directly across from Orlando Health, is open for business and has implemented a new contactless takeout system.

Guest can walk through the automatic sliding doors at The Delaney Hotel which will then lead them to the restaurant’s side door (pictured above) where they can pick up their order at the bar or they can simply call the restaurant when they have arrived at the parking lot and have their order brought out to them curbside.

Delaney’s Tavern is currently offering a special takeout menu that includes some of their Tavern favorites as well as daily Family Meals specials available at 4pm everyday.  All family meals feed four people and feature a house salad and Parker House rolls for $45.

Executive Chef Anthony Albino and his team have been working together for the past 10-12 years and they certainly know what they are doing.

I recently had the opportunity to try their Tavern Burger with a side of crispy potato wedges and it was one of the best burgers and best crispy potato wedges that I have ever had in my life.

The Tavern Burger consists of brisket, chuck, short rib blended patty, smoked gouda cheese, caramelized onion aioli, crispy onion frizzle, and chipotle bbq in between a toasted brioche bun.

The finished product.

For a limited time only, guest can order a Tavern Burger ($13) and receive a free beer.  Choices are: Budweiser, Michelob Ultra, or Bud Light.

I would 100% recommend this burger.

I took my burger togo and enjoyed it in my scenic backyard.

I hope to return soon after the quarantine is over for a staycation at The Delaney Hotel and dinner *inside* Delaney’s Tavern.  Until then, takeout will do.

Edible Orlando and Walt Disney World Host Seventh Annual Field to Feast Dinner 2020

Edible Orlando and Walt Disney World team up to host an outdoor feast featuring locally sourced dishes at Long & Scott Farms benefitting Second Harvest Food Bank.

It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day to enjoy the Florida outdoors with alfresco dining on a farm in Zellwood, Florida. The 7th annual Field to Feast dinner was situated beautifully in Long & Scott Farms under an open pavilion with outdoor string lights hanging from the ceiling. This year, the dinner raised funds for the Kids Cafe Program and all proceeds benefitted Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

Food stations surrounded the main dining area showcasing a variety of talent and creativity from Walt Disney World’s top chefs. Each food station was paired with a wine, beer or cocktail selection served by a master sommelier. One of my favorite stations was from Epcot Festival’s catering team with the prime steak tartare served in a hollow bone marrow and sprinkled with edible flowers.

We ended our dinner with a hayride tour of the farm on the Sweet Corn Express, which was a large covered wagon pulled by a tractor. It was a fun and tasty experience and I can’t wait to see what Edible Orlando has planned for next year’s event!

Eating My Way Through a Masquerade at The Edison at Disney Springs

Walking into The Edison, I entered a fantasy world of electrifying mystique and intrigue during The Edison’s inaugural Masquerade on February 22. From the moment I crossed the threshold, I was happily surprised walking around every corner with all the decor and effort put into the night.

Appetizers were coming around on trays to enjoy while drinks were being poured all night.

Blackened shrimp cocktail with cocktail and remoulade sauces.

BBQ short rib with kimchee.

Oyster shooters with mignonette. You can taste the ocean with every bite.

Cucumber canapés with salmon mousse. This was my favorite food item of the night! Very light and refreshing, yet packed with creamy protein.

Buffalo meatballs. These were very tasty even though they’re not very pretty.

Portobello fries with siracha. These were very unique, moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. The siracha added a nice spice to each bite, but doesn’t overpower the earthy taste of the portobello.

After the savory bites, the sweet ones came rolling out. These cake pops were the bomb and the pistachio white chocolate pops were amazing even though I’m not a fan of white chocolate.

For something more tart, here are some lemon tarts with a fresh raspberry on top to quench your thirst.

Eyeing down the food will make you super thirsty and want a cocktail from their special menu for the night.

The Butterfly Effect was my favorite. It consisted of Grey Goose vodka, St. Germain elderflower, lime juice, simple syrup, and pea flower infusion. Smooth and simple with a splash of color.

The Masked Mule is a bolder choice with Maker’s Mark bourbon, lime juice, honey, blackberries, and ginger beer. Still a delight, but strong as ever.

Sip In Moderation is made with Plymouth gin, simple syrup, hibiscus cordial, pineapple juice, lemon juice, and chambord. A little dryer, but still refreshing.

Don’t be fooled that the five cocktails are the only drinks offered because the bartenders can make anything else you’d like to order. Also, fairies were flying around offering a variety of shots for $10 each.

Check out The Edison on the daily as well as for their special events.

Inside Look: Galeria Restaurant in Baldwin Park

Galeria was founded from a group of international service and hospitality entrepreneurs whose background in classical performing arts and culinary arts were inspired to offer great food and great art, giving artists a place to showcase their work.

Spinalis Sliders – Espresso rubbed spinalis, caramelized onions, Hawaiian slider bun, arugula, and wasabi cucumber sriracha aioli. These buns add a light sweetness to a flavorful spinalis.

The Bacon Flight includes thick cut Compart Duroc bacon, jerked, agave sriracha glazed, dazed and glazed maple chipotle, served with bacon jam. This was one of my favorite dishes at dinner. Why? Because bacon is the best thing ever. I most likely had two plates of this dish on my own and I don’t regret a single bite.

The Van Gough is their $65.99 Tomahawk Steak, which is to die for. I can’t wait to come back for more!

Look how beautiful Chef Matt made this Tomahawk steak. It is just as tender and moist as you see it in this photograph. I also wish I brought home the bone for the pup.

The Claude Monet is Galeria’s blend of fresh salad mix, candied walnuts, applewood smoked blu cheese, sliced strawberries, and Guava balsamic dressing. The guava balsamic dressing is definitely unique for this dish; however, it draws all of the flavors together.

The Day Boat is seasonal fish, tomato watermelon kimchi, roasted fingerling potatoes, and roasted vegetables. It was as light as it sounds, but still SO flavorful.

As for dessert, it all depends on the day and what the chef has in mind for you. Chef Joshua will create beautiful and delicious treats after you’ve enjoyed a beautiful meal by Chef Matt.

Grab the menu, a glass of wine or cocktail and laugh the evening away with friends and family while your eyes feast on the local artwork on display throughout the restaurant.

For more information, visit Galeria yourself.

Great Harvest Bread Company Feeds You & Our Community During Crisis

Brad and Rachel Cottle are a husband and wife team focused on finding healthy options to delicious foods. They only opened their location 4 months ago in the downtown Orlando area and they’re already supporting our Orlando community by donating loaves of bread to local food banks and coalitions. Right now, they’re donating a loaf for every 2 loaves you buy.

Great Harvest is a slice of their life that they wanted to share with the Orlando community they have grown to love. Great Harvest is a “freedom franchise.” It is locally owned and operated, with Brad milling the wheat and mixing the ingredients every morning to make fresh breads and goodies, but they also get the support of a like-minded community of other franchisees sharing ideas and recipes.

The bread they bake is fresh and they only use honey to sweeten their bread.

Not only do they have fresh bread for you, they also make dishes and desserts for you to enjoy on location or on the go (more so of the latter now because gathering is illegal at the moment). One of their popular sandwiches is their Breakfast Sandwich, which can be customized by your preference in meat, bread, cheese, etc. They’ll all have an egg in the middle, which is nicely sliced and displayed. It’s not only photogenic, but it’s also delicious with a blend of flavors.

Aside from bread and sandwiches, they also have items in the store to buy. This includes fresh and organic items like preservatives, peanut butter and honey.

There are seasonings for soups and other dishes you’d like to make at home.

Not to mention all the freshly in-house baked dog treats they sell and offer your 4 legged friends.

For more information, check out Great Harvest yourself. I know I’ll be back!

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Saffron Indian Cuisine – Restaurant Row

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers.  The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.

Saffron is an Indian restaurant located on Sand Lake Road’s “Restaurant Row” owned by restaurateur Sunny Corda.  Sunny has implemented a new contactless pick-up system at Saffron where guest can walk through a partially open door and pick up their order from an assigned table or they can call the restaurant when they have arrived at the parking lot and have their order brought to them in their car.  Free delivery is also available as well.

I had the opportunity to try a few takeout dishes and they were all so good!  The whole time I was eating my food at home I kept thinking to myself, “Indian food is such a blessing.”  It really spoke to my soul!

Naan – a light & fluffy bread.
Chicken Tikka Masala – Chicken tikka, cashew paste, house special tomato gravy. It was seriously delicious.

Kesari Nazarana Vegetable Dinner

Assorted platter with samosa, vegetable cutlet, onion bhajiya and hara bhara kabab in a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce.  This dish made me happy every time I took a bite of it.

Tandoori Chicken

Marinated chicken, spices, herbs in a bed of onions and green peppers.  The marination, spices, and herbs of the chicken was perfection.  Highly recommended!

Takeout menu below:

Overall, the food was quite enjoyable and I will say that Saffron has become my new favorite Indian restaurant in town.  I hope to return soon after the quarantine is over to try some of their other dishes *inside* the restaurant next time.

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Christini’s Ristorante Italiano – Dr. Phillips

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers. The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.

Therefore the beloved Christini’s Ristorante Italiano in Dr. Phillips is now offering curbside pick-up and delivery from 12pm to 9pm daily.  Guest can call the restaurant at (407) 345-8770 to place an order and then have their meal brought out to their car for a quick and easy contactless pick-up.

We had the opportunity to experience this new curbside service and we were highly impressed with convenience of it as well as the taste and quality of our food.  The culinary team at Christini’s Ristorante Italiano has put together an outstanding menu of original recipes blending the flavors of selective regions from Italy.

Ciabatta Bread – served with roasted eggplant dip and shaved Parmesan that comes with every order.  Made fresh in house.

Fusilli Boscaiola – Spiral pasta with shitake mushrooms in a light tomato, dry sherry and brandy cream sauce.  Addictive and delicious.

Filetto al Barolo – Prime filet mignon in a Barolo wine sauce with shitake mushrooms, pearl onions.  This dish will surely fulfill your steak cravings.

Ricotta Cheesecake – strawberry sauce, strawberry, raspberries, chocolate sticks, mint, topped with an edible flower.  A rich and decadent dessert.

All wine bottles are discounted at 50% off and can be ordered for take-out as well.

Christini’s Ristorante Italiano has been around for 35 years, as far back as when a majority of the Dr. Phillips area was just a lonely pasture farm.  We should continue to support this locally owned and family operated restaurant as much as possible during these unpredictable times.

Cafe Linger

Good morning, Orlando!

In the midst of the global pandemic, maintaining normality has become very difficult for everyone, including small businesses. We will continue to serve our community the best we can by offering pickup and delivery from 8am-3pm Tuesday-Sunday.

Cafe Linger is on UberEats, but during this time, we ask that you call us and we will deliver directly to you. It lowers the amount of people handing off your order, making it safer for you, your loved ones, and for our team. We would also like to inform you that Uber takes a 1/3 cut of everything ordered through them, so asking for delivery directly through us would ensure that all orders go back into our small business. We will continue to be available through the app, as we do understand some prefer Uber, however please keep this in mind during the stay home order.

Remember to support your favorite local places during this crisis whenever you can. We cannot express our gratitude for the love and support we have received in all directions and because of you, we get to continue to do what we love most—serving our beautiful city.

Inside Look: Dragonfly Robata in Dr Phillips Area

Dragonfly Robata invites you to make memories and meaningful connections whether it is with loved ones or professional colleagues while enjoying fresh and creative items from their menu. While indulging on dishes, President Hiro Leung may walk around to greet you and see how you’re doing or if you need anything while visiting Dragonfly Robata. If you get to meet him, you’ll find that he is one of the most humble human beings you will ever meet in this life time.

Yellowtail is one of my favorite fish to eat and this definitely does it justice in the Yellowtail Crudo dish with all the flavors and freshness. It is served with heirloom cherry tomatoes, avocado, ponzu, citrus oil, and shiso to accompany the yellowtail on your palate.

For vegetarians, there’s the Heirloom Cauliflower Salad as a starter. It includes carrots, mustard seeds, walnuts, yuzu vinaigrette, and micro wasabi greens. Make sure you eat it hot for the cauliflower to be crispy.

Another very popular vegetarian dish is the Maitake Mushroom Fritters. This has to be my absolute favorite dish of the night; I’d order this over the Yellowtail Crudo any day so that’s saying a lot. This plays with truffle salt and a tentsuyu sauce to create unique flavors for you to enjoy. The texture is also moist and tender on the inside, yet crispy on the outside. This isn’t only my favorite dish, but the favorite of many of the Dragonfly employees.

If you’d like hand held item, consider the Steamed Buns where you can choose the protein base. For protein, you can either get the braised ribs or braised pork belly and both are served with pickled vegetables and red chili paste to add a kick. We couldn’t decide on the protein so we ended up getting both to try and I’m not mad about it.

This is the Smoky Dragon roll. It is made with salmon, crab delight, red onion, temp flakes, cucumber topped with avocado, torched tuna, lemon zest, kobachi, and eel sauce. So many different textures, flavors and amazingness for you to explore with your tastebuds. This was quite a delight and I have no complaints.

This visit was the first time I’ve had Foie Gras Nigiri, which is seared foil gras, plum tamarind and candied garlic. This is definitely a chef’s recommendation and an interesting treat. However, it will break into pieces while picking it up with chopsticks due to how delicate it is. I would suggest using a fork or spoon.

Once done with all your little bites, don’t forget about dessert. One of their unique desserts is the matcha creme brûlée. It is so earthy, yet creamy and refreshing. I highly recommend getting this dish to share.

Not to mention, they had an event for the Dogs of Orlando where your dog can enjoy a dish right by your side on the patio. These dishes were created by the chef with ingredients that even you could eat…if you’d like it in the shape of a bone. However, your furry friend might not want to share.

The Bangers & Mash is quite a popular one amongst the four legged friends that evening.

Another is the Chicken & Rice dish being the second choice. This event was a one time thing as of now, but they’re working on adding it to their schedule to have again. Whether or not there’s a dog event, you can still bring your dogs out while you dine on the patio.

For more information about Dragonfly Robata, please visit their local location in Orlando or their website for their other locations in Florida.

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers. The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.

Executive Chef Greg Thompson

Del Frisco’s on International Drive has created a special prix fixe curbside pick-up menu for only $35 and I was invited to check it out, while maintaining a 6-foot distance at all times. This new special menu is available from 11am to 8pm daily and guests can receive an additional 10% off discount when ordering to-go.

Then three-course curbside pick-up menu offers the choice between two starters – a fresh Classic Caesar or Blue Cheese Wedge, two exquisite entrees – Filet Mignon with Chateau Mashed Potatoes or Del’s Jumbo Lump Crab Cake with Chateau Mashed Potatoes, and a delicious strawberry sauce pecan crusted cheesecake for dessert.  Each entrée can be upgraded for an additional price.

Amazing house bread, made fresh daily.

Iceberg, Cherry Tomatoes, Bacon, Blue cheese Dressing & Danish Blue cheese Crumbles.  It was crisp and delicious.

Strawberry Sauce on the side, Pecan Crust.  It was heavenly.

The regular menu is also available for to-go orders from 4pm to 8pm daily.  All wine bottles are discounted at 50% off and can be ordered for take-out as well.  Guests can also visit the Del Frisco’s website and purchase a variety of grocery items such as: steaks, lobster, shrimp and lots of high-quality, fresh produce.

Delivery options will become available in the near future.

PRESS RELEASE: 4 Rivers Smokehouse Announces “Groceries 4R You”

4R Restaurant Group has announced the launch of a Groceries 4R You, a new affordable grocery marketplace that offers consumers access to a limited list of hard-to-find items at 4 Rivers Smokehouses and The COOP during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Designed to provide essential food, kitchen and hygiene items that are currently scarce at many traditional retailers, Groceries 4R You offers Paper Towels, Toilet Paper, Disposable Plates, Ground Beef, Chicken Breasts, Half Chickens, Spaghetti, Black Beans, White Rice, Milk, Beer and more.  These items will be sold until supplies last. Products can be ordered online at www.4riverssmokehouse.com, www.thecoopwp.com, or through the 4 Rivers app.  Other 4 Rivers products such as BBQ sauces, rubs and jerky will also be available to order through this service.

“More so than ever before, providing a safe and healthy environment for our Guests and Team Members remains our top priority. The launch of Groceries 4R You creates a safe one-stop-shop for our guests to pick up essentials from the convenience of their car.” said John Rivers, Founder/CEO 4R Restaurant Group.

Grocery 4R You products will be available daily during normal business hours at The COOP in Winter Park and all 4 Rivers restaurants (except the downtown Orlando location) via the new “Pop-Up Drive-Thru” tents that were recently added to all stores.  As inventories are limited, this program will sell items until supplies last.

Brix & Mortar Urban Winery Offers $20 Bottles & FREE Delivery in Times of Need

Brix & Mortar is exactly what the name implies. It’s an urban winery that plans on making wine at this location instead of import the wine from their Texas location. However, with COVID-19 at bay, that’s going to make it a while longer before they can make their wines in Sanford, FL or you can sit in their beautiful winery with friends.

Right now, the owners themselves are delivering bottles of their wine for only $20 a bottle with FREE DELIVERY around Central Florida. Tips are greatly accepted to be dispersed amongst their employees.

From light to dark, Brix & Mortar Urban Winery has them all. Their wines are delightful. I’m not fond of white wines or rosés, but they make pretty great ones here.

Order enough to set up your own wine tasting for those who you’re quarantined with…or even for yourself alone.

Maybe pour a glass or two and have the bottle by your side while taking a bubble bath. Treat yourself to your own spa day.

While you’re at it, make a charcuterie board too until you can enjoy a Brix & Mortar board in their lounge after we are cleared of COVID-19.

Here’s a close up of what you can have on your board like they do, but make sure you rotate daily so you can refine your palate and keep things interesting.

Hopefully we can enjoy the winery in the summer because that’s an excellent time to enjoy one of their frozen wine drinks.

For the future when you get a chance to enjoy the urban winery on location, think about what items you could pick up as a souvenir too. They offer mugs, wine glasses, candles, corks, shirts, etc.

Until you enjoy a seat in the winery, check out their menu and order some bottles for delivery. It’s such a steal for them to sell for only $20 a bottle.

For more information, check out the Brix & Mortar Urban Winery website.

From OCLS

How to Social Distance and Still Use Your Library

Amid ongoing concerns about COVID-19 and directives from public officials to implement social distancing practices, Orange County Library System has decided to cancel all events and classes. The library takes the safety and wellness of our customers and staff very seriously and will do its part in mitigating the current health crisis.

Despite these well-intentioned efforts, we know unplanned time at home can mean resources to keep yourself (or your children, if you’re a caregiver) entertained and away from stressful news coverage during this time can be a challenge to find or afford. You might be wondering how to find entertainment without taking on unexpected expense or where to find learning resources for your children when you’ve suddenly been thrust into homeschooling.

Here is a list of resources you can take advantage of remotely:

The library offers access to a number of digital lending platforms that offer e-books, digital magazines and audiobooks. If you find yourself stressed, this may be a good time to practice some self-care—a light-hearted memoir by your favorite comedian or a compelling suspense thriller may be exactly what you need at this time.

In addition to our online lending platforms, we also offer free home delivery. At this time, the library plans to operate the service as normal. Through our home delivery program, you can request books, CD Books, CDs and DVDS (as well as new release entertainment DVDs). Visit our catalog to make your requests.

If you discover that you’ve exhausted your Netflix queue or that you want to find movies you can’t see anywhere else, we also have a comprehensive collection of TV series and films available through several lending platforms.

Kanopy is offering a collection of credit-free movies and documentaries for 30 days thanks to its partners.

Music is a healthy tool to quiet the mind and raise your spirits. If you have children at home, an impromptu dance party can be a great way for them to burn off extra energy.

Experts recommend trying your best to stick to routines when caring for children during crises. This means that even though schools are closed that it’s helpful to encourage regular wake-up times and to provide structured activities throughout the day. While our digital lending services all offer something for kids, we also have free subscriptions to numerous online learning resources.

First Look: New Vietnamese Fast Casual Restaurant Opens in East Orlando – Phoresh Noodles

A new delicious Vietnamese restaurant hits the streets with popular Vietnamese dishes. It is owned and run by a local family who wants to share Vietnamese street fare with the Orlando community. I’m glad they’re not saving these dishes for only their family gatherings and are sharing the dishes with everyone instead.

Take a look at their menu:

What’s better than delicious, flavorful dishes that are also great for your wallet!? A little bird also told me how they have special menu items here and there on weekends. Make sure you ask them if they have any if you visit during the weekends.

Don’t forget to Pho It Up with a bowl of pho, where you can decide each step what to add from the broth to how much noodles and protein you’d prefer. They even have vegetarian options (photographed here)!

The next popular Vietnamese dish is the Vermicelli, which I love with their well-seasoned pork. Their fish sauce isn’t as fishy as other places, which is nice. It has a sweetness to it, but it’s not overpowering because they are pretty good at making their own. Many of you may not know that fish sauce served to you with dishes isn’t coming directly from the bottle you find in stores, but it is diluted with vinegar, sugar, etc.

Street Fare options also include Roti Paratha Cakes. The sauce is like a curry and the roti is made nice and warm. Be careful because it comes out steaming. I crave this every day since I have had it. I can’t wait to have my foodie meet up and share it with other foodie enthusiasts so I hope I see you there.

Phoresh Noodles also has chicken wings, which are super crispy on the outside yet moist and tender on the inside. They’re made with garlic butter and fish sauce. It sounds odd, but it tastes great. Trust me.

Yum Squid is another that you may not run into often. The squid is served shredded with papaya, red onion, cilantro, and a Thai chili sauce. Although it says Thai chili, it’s not Thai hot so don’t sweat it.

While you wait for your food, enjoy some fresh lemonade. It was my first time having fresh lemonade the Vietnamese way and I wish ordering this had free refills because I’d drink it all day.

Don’t forget to grab a Vietnamese iced coffee, which is known to be made with condensed milk. I fancy my Vietnamese iced coffee with less condensed milk so I can taste all the notes coming from the coffee. Shout out to Made In Orlando for being one of my hand models.

For more information on the Foodie Meet Up, visit Yelp or check out my Flyer. With COVID19-19, the meet up is currently on hold for further notice. Do still RSVP so we have your information for updates when we do have the event!

For more about Phoresh Noodles, visit their website.

Interview: Life in Beijing Two Months After Coronavirus / COVID-19 Outbreak

As of today, March 20th 2020 – globally, the virus has infected over 270,000 people and killed just over 11,000 and climbing, according to the WHO. Almost 90,000 people have recovered from the infection, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University. The first several cases appeared in late December of 2019, with Wuhan, and many other cities beginning quarantine in China on January 23, 2020. This week, China reported no new domestic cases.

I spoke with my friend and fellow foodie Kirsten Harrington about her time in China and how life is going on there right now, as well as any advice she may have for us living through this in Central Florida now. Kirsten is a former Orlando freelance writer currently living Beijing, China with her two sons and husband Mike who works for Universal Studios, set to open in Beijing in 2021. She writes about her adventures on her blog at http://peelinganorange.com

Recently, she shared some photos on her social media of scenes in Beijing this week as life started to get back to “normal” with 6 feet / 1 meter distanced chairs in restaurants and mandatory face masks even today.

Ricky: How was it in Beijing when the coronavirus first began to spread in China?

Kirsten: I’ll admit I didn’t really get it when it started here. I had the same thinking “what’s the big deal? I’m probably not going to get sick and if I do it won’t be that serious.”

But still I abided by the Chinese government regulations that seemed very strict. It’s only now, in hindsight as I watch this virus spread around the globe, that I realize the measures weren’t taken so I didn’t get sick as an individual. It was about stopping the spread into Beijing from other provinces.

It worked. We had less than 500 cases in Beijing.

Ricky: When did you first realize this was going to be serious?

Kirsten: I first realized how serious this was when we were in Japan for the New Years holiday at the end of January. We were ready to head back to Beijing and received an email that the boys school would go online after break. Then we heard that some countries would not allow their carriers to fly into China. And that Chinese travelers would be quarantined if they came to the US.

We wondered if we would be stuck in Japan, unable to get to China and barred from the US. We stayed a few extra days in Japan and then returned to Beijing. Everything was closed, except the Western grocery store in my compound. I heard the virus had spread to Japan and S. Korea, where we had just traveled. More people in Wuhan were dying. I knew it was serious. All of my Chinese friends kept texting me, telling me to be careful, not go out

Ricky: I think that is the phase we are at right now in America. The state is shutting things down and encouraging us to do social distancing, take out / delivery at restaurants, work from home, universities / schools are closed till who knows when. What were some of the measures that they took in Beijing?

Kirsten: As of early February masks became mandatory in public places. Some stores had a limit so people wouldn’t hoard. All schools were closed, including public, private, day care, preschool, after school, art school, sports etc.

Any business who defied this and stayed open lost their license to operate. (Except online). Gyms, movie theaters closed, churches closed in December. Temperature checks became mandatory everywhere – entering the subway, a shop, a mall, shuttle bus, office building.

Banners are hung all over the city urging citizens to stay home, wear a mask, check for fever, not panic, wash hands. Microphones throughout public places carried the same message. All Chinese New Year celebrations were cancelled.

Temples were closed at that time. Transportation was restricted into and out of Beijing. For example at one point private cars or ride share vehicles were not allowed to cross the city limits. Villages on the outskirts barred visitors by blockading roads with vehicles, this happened in Beijing too. Students and employees at various companies had to fill out surveys daily to report their whereabouts and health status.

All Starbucks and Apple stores and large retailers closed for a time, some are reopening just now. All tourist places – the Great Wall, forbidden city, museums, etc closed. Some are still closed. All neighborhoods I know of are still “closed” – residents only, no visitors. Must show ID and submit to temperature check to get in or out. Arrivals into Beijing by foreigners require two week quarantine.

Over 10 million people left BJ (Beijing) for new year. The government imposed restrictions on which provinces were allowed to return to Beijing. I read as of last week there are still 800,000 people in BJ under quarantine of some sort.

Most shops and restaurants were closed for a period of time. It’s really only been in the last 2-3 weeks that some places are open again

The regulations change daily, sometimes twice a day. It’s hard to keep up. Oh and most people worked from home, many are still not back at work. Sometimes it’s company policy, sometimes government policy.

It was like a ghost town from the end of January until about two weeks ago. Chinese people receive texts on their phone telling them not to go out. Foreigners were the only ones out, because we did not have that same level of fear instilled into us (because of the language gap in part) and we are naturally more rebellious!

I went out for groceries everyday because my online ordering skills are not very good in Mandarin.

Also I forgot to mention some places (including restaurants) make you scan an app that asks the phone company to share your data to prove you have been in Beijing at least two weeks or they won’t let you in.

Ricky: Wow – how did the people of China survive through this period without working or businesses in operation?

Kirsten: Some employers were ordered to keep paying people. Many small mom and pop shops are still not open. I don’t know if they will survive. Many vendors in the markets aren’t back yet.

Ricky: Did the Chinese government implement any new measures to aid?

Kirsten: I don’t know but I’m guessing the barriers to entry are lower here- noodle stands come and go often. I am very worried for our restaurant and hotel industry here. Hotel capacity is down 90 percent here, roughly. Mandatory quarantines are not good for business

Some restaurants survived on delivery. Our favorite Italian place is still not open to dine in, but they deliver. Chinese people are used to having food delivered, many people eat this way everyday, or twice a day, so that was an easier hurdle to jump

Restaurants were required to record the temperature of chef, handler and delivery guy. It was written and included with your order. They are not allowed to come to the door, food handlers all wear masks and gloves.

Ricky: May be a good idea to start implementing that here …lol

Kirsten: When entering and restaurant that is open now you have to check you temperature and leave your phone number. You are not allowed to sit across from each other, Must keep one meter apart. Mask on unless eating. Rules vary to one diner per table to max of 4. It’s constantly changing

Ricky: There are very few people with masks on here – I wonder if that will change

Kirsten: Paying by phone is preferred-no touching money etc. some places like Starbucks at first you had to order the drink on the app from outside the store and they would hand it to you with gloves on.

Restaurants are fined or managers are detained if the allow too many customers in. Some places have signs on the table asking you to comply with the rules so they won’t be penalized

Many places have reopened with limited hours – like a cafe that used to open at 8 now opens at 11.

Two cooking schools I know of have posted online cooking classes- easy dishes to cook at home. I don’t think it helps them financially but it it’s good marketing

The restaurant restrictions (capacity restrictions, takeout only, hours, etc) vary by district in Beijing and they have changed constantly, making it very difficult for owners to comply. This confusion – along with the fear local citizens have in venturing out – has led to the demise of some longtime beijing restaurants. Even if they were allowed to stay open the demand is not there because citizens were told to stay inside

We just got back from dinner. This restaurant was limited to 15 diners, at a restaurant that could hold 60 on a normal day.

Ricky: What do your kids do with school being out? How is society spending its time? What made you want to return to Beijing? Were there signs it would be safe? or was it just the same as in the States?

Kirsten: This week is spring break, but otherwise they have a full high school course load online. They have a more relaxed schedule, since they don’t have to commute, so they have time to cook breakfast every day. We go out for lunch to see which places are open and support the economy. There aren’t really any social opportunities for them yet, as gathering in groups is still not allowed and they can’t have friends over. We did take a break to go to the states to have a little more freedom, that was just when the outbreak started in Washington.

Mike, my husband did not leave Beijing, we returned to be together as a family. And the number of new cases in China had fallen dramatically. China is our home. In retrospect is what’s the right decision because if we had waited travel would have been very problematic.

Today – More people are out, walking in the park, going back to work – oh but the haircut place may be still closed ?

Things are much safer in China now (than in other countries). The virus is under control. All of the strict measurements were meant to limit the movement of people and thereby reduce transmission. It worked. It was extreme. People in Wuhan paid a price. Some are still in lockdown I believe. It was uncomfortable and inconvenient. There is a cost, economic, social and physical.

Ricky: What are some of the costs you are expecting to see lay bare in the coming days or even right now as you look around Beijing? How long till you think it will take to return to normal if ever?

Kirsten: People will lose jobs, businesses will fail, here and abroad. Is it worth it to save lives? I think so. But this is where we need to pull together. Help you neighbor, share resources, do what you can.

I’m still waiting to see if my favorite baozi restaurant will reopen. It’s too early to tell what the full impact will be. The spring weather helps, people want to get out

Many expats won’t come back, the restrictions are too onerous for quarantine.

Some schools may finish the year online. The tourism industry has been hit really hard

But the welfare of the people is more important

Back to normal? Maybe this summer – We see signs of normalcy in that places like the Summer Palace is open again with capacity limits. More restaurants are open. More traffic on the street. It’s a purposely controlled reawakening to prevent a flare up. When schools open it will be slowly, a few grades at a time

It really is amazing for Beijing that there were only 500 cases – I read that if they had closed off travel out of Wuhan one week later, there would have been 60% more cases

Ricky: What do you have to advise people of Orlando ?

Kirsten: Advice:

Listen to the scientists. Practice social distancing. It’s not about you.

Be willing to be inconvenienced to keep others safe and slow the spread of the virus. Wash your hands and don’t hoard toilet paper. Look out for your neighbor.

Share what you have. Can you order groceries or food delivery for someone who can’t get out? Do it. Encourage a friend, bake cookies, don’t panic.

Practice soul care. Mediate, pray, go for a walk (if you can), listen to music, pet the dog, watch a movie. This is likely to be a marathon, not a sprint. Slow down and breathe. We will all get through this if we act rationally and do our part.

If you are able, pour money into the economy in any way that is safe to do so. Cover someone’s rent for a month or give $20 to the food bank.

Chef Laurent Hollaender Spotlights New Dishes from The Boheme

Located inside The Grand Bohemian in downtown Orlando, The Boheme is an upscale restaurant featuring amazing dishes from Chef Laurent Hollaender. We had the opportunity to experience a selection of The Boheme’s newly reimagined menu featuring brand-new vegan items.

Starting with appetizers, there are options such as Beef Carpaccio, Tomato & Burrata, Calamari, and Grilled Peach Salad.

The Beef Carpaccio is marinated dry aged Wagyu with shaved parmesan, arugula, crispy capers, and mustard aioli. The dry aged Wagyu was just as tasty as you could imagine!

The Tomato.& Burrata is great for cheese lovers as the Burrata is served with heirloom tomatoes, olive oil, aged balsamic, fresh oregano, fleur de sel, and cracked pepper.

My favorite appetizer was definitely the Calamari. The calamari is fried perfectly with jalapeños, olives, pequillo peppers, Capote capers, Meyer lemon, oregano, and Moroccan harissa sauce. The calamari and Moroccan harissa sauce pair so well together!

For those who love their salads, the Grilled Peach Salad (filed greens, pecans, goat cheese, raspberries, cornbread croutons, fig and sherry vinaigrette) is a pretty and delicious option.

Next, we were able to sample items from their brand new Vegan menu!

The Spiced Chickpea and Lentil Soup has a lovely flavor and a perfect starter to a meal.

However, it was the Beet Poke Bowl blew me away. If I hadn’t had known beforehand, I would have never guessed these were beets. They’re marinated so well, that they have such a similar flavor to the fish you typically would get in poke bowls. And it’s served with kimchi cucumbers, radish, carrots, grilled scallions, avocado, and jasmine rice.

The Vegan Linguini Bolognese is made with ground cauliflower, mushrooms, carrots, onions, pumpkin seeds, and sun-dried tomatoes topped with cashew parmesan. And to make it even better, the linguini was cooked perfectly al dente.

Now for my favorite part of the evening, The Tomahawk Experience. A 42 oz. 1855 beef tomahawk is flambéed and carved table side for a fun little show. It’s served with Porcini mushroom sauce and sides of grilled asparagus, grape tomatoes, Yukon golden potatoes, and a yellow beet mash.

We finished the evening with two different dessert offerings. The Black Bee Honey Cheesecake is an orange blossom honey cheesecake, Grand Marnier caramel sauce, and a honeycomb waffle crisp. And you can’t forget about the cute, little chocolate bees!

The Blueberry Lavender Gelato is served with a lemon almond crisp. The lemon almond crisp was like a light cookie (somewhat comparable to the texture of a macaron).
