#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Elize Restaurant – Downtown Orlando

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers.  The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.

Finally! Elize at Home!

Downtown Orlando’s newest restaurant Elize, located at 55 West, has created a new dinner kit, which, in less than 30 minutes, can be transformed into a wonderful fine dining experience.  The delicious dinner box comes with step-by-step instructions on how to prepare four elaborate, unique, and Dutch-inspired courses.

Of course, part of experiencing great food is the way it’s presented so every box comes with detailed plating instructions from their award-winning Executive Chef Leon Mazairac and if you need additional help, his phone number is provided along with the kit so you can call him with any cooking questions that you may have.

The dinner box menu changes every Thursday and the kits are available for pickup or delivery the following day, Friday, between 3PM and 5PM and can be ordered until 3PM the following Wednesday.  They recommend you serve the food on Friday, Saturday or Sunday.

I was invited by Elize to pick up a dinner kit to try out for myself and with me being a recovering perfectionist and not wanting to fail Elize’s exemplary cooking standards, I was incredibly anxious at first but once I started cooking and getting into the rhythm of it, it turned out to be really easy and fun.  I would totally do it again.  In the end, I felt more experienced and had more confidence in myself in the kitchen.  I would highly recommend this cooking experience for anyone wanting to up their culinary skills.

The Essentials

AppetizerSoup Parmentier – Russet potatoes and basil emulsion with Old Hearth Rosemary Bread and salted butter with pimenton.

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Big Fin Seafood Kitchen – Restaurant Row

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers.  The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.

Big Fin Seafood Kitchen, an award winning seafood restaurant located in the Dellagio Town Center on Sand Lake Road’s “Restaurant Row”, has created a new limited menu available 5pm-8pm every week night and 5pm-9pm every weekend.  They are also offering bottled beer and wine at 50% off with any curbside food order.

If you prefer to stay in, you can also order Big Fin Seafood Kitchen online on DoorDash and have it delivered to wherever you are.

Michael Venutolo ll, General Manager

Family meals are also available for those looking to feed their families at an affordable price.  Menu below.

We had the opportunity to experience their new curbside service and we were highly impressed with convenience of it as well as the taste and quality of our takeout order.  Executive Chef & Partner James Slattery and his team at Big Fin Seafood Kitchen are passionate about serving Central Florida with seafood uniquely prepared from recipes and cooking techniques learned from around the globe.

The Surf & Surf – Big Fin crab cake, shrimp and scallops, lemon beurre Blanc and tartar sauces.  It comes with your choice of two sides so I ordered mine with French fries and garlic mashed potatoes.  The crab cake had a pleasingly crisp exterior with a meaty and soft interior.  The shrimp and scallops were impressively succulent and fresh as if they just came out of the ocean.  The garlic mashed potatoes were rich and creamy.

Shrimp & Scallop Orleans Combo (Blackened) – Gluten-free. Spinach, sun-dried tomatoes, mushrooms, crawfish Parmesan grits, Cajun cream sauce.  This dish is kind of like the one above, but with a Southern twist.

Twin 6oz. Filet Mignon – served with garlic mashed potatoes, asparagus.

When a filet mignon is cooked properly, you won’t even need a knife to cut through the meat, it will literally fall apart under the use of a fork and this cut of filet mignon did exactly that; it was extremely tender with an incredible texture.

French Fries – Every bite of these cajun seasoned crispy fries took me back to my childhood when I would visit my grandparents in Louisiana during the summer and enjoy their homemade crawfish boils.

Mac-N-Cheese – it was cheesy, gooey, creamy, and surprisingly buttery; therefore making it the perfect accompaniment to my garlic mashed potatoes.  I was also impressed with the long cavatappi pasta that they used as oppose to short pasta –  this subtle adjustment made the side dish more fun to chew on.

Scott Joseph Hosts First Virtual Supper Club with Soco Thornton Park on April 30

0

Scott Joseph of Scott Joseph’s Orlando Restaurant Guide is partnering with Soco Thornton Park for their very first virtual Supper Club using the teleconferencing software, Zoom on April 30.

We spoke briefly with Scott Joseph about this virtual supper club via e-mail:

Tasty Chomps: What inspired you to start this event?

Scott Joseph: I’ve been helping someone learn Zoom for teaching online and got to thinking it would be a creative way to hold a Supper Club, since we can’t all gather in one place for the time being.

Is this your very first virtual Supper Club?

I once held a Supper Club in Dublin but this will be the first one in cyberspace.

What is the program going to be like?

Greg Richie of Soco has put together a three-course dinner paired with two wines. Guests will pick the food up at the restaurant on the day of the event between 2pm-6pm then, using Richie’s instructions for reheating the entree, gather the meal in front of their webcams and log in to my Zoom room at 7pm.

All the participants will be able to see and hear the others. Richie will come on and talk about the food (I’ll probably show a video of it being prepared in the Soco kitchen); and we’re hoping to get the winemakers, one from California and one from New Zealand, to Zoom in and talk about the wines.

We’ll also have the usual dinner conversations, hearing from everyone about how they’re adapting and what they’re looking forward to once they’re able to get back out.

How long do you think we are going to be social distancing? Any words of encouragement for restaurants out there right now?

I wish I could be more optimistic, but I’m afraid we’ll be in some sort of distancing for several more months, perhaps through the end of the year. I think it’s great how so many of our local restaurants have adapted to become takeout operations, but I know it isn’t enough to keep their full staffs on payroll. It’s going to take more creative thinking to adapt further and make the current situation profitable. Better distribution of government funds to small businesses wouldn’t hurt, either.

Cost for the food is $45 per person; the wines are priced at $20 per bottle. So cost for a couple would be $130. For an individual, it’s $85 (but you have the wine all to yourself). Tax is extra and so is the gratuity (recommended a minimum of 20 percent to support the staff). Tickets are first come, first serve.

There is also an optional “welcome cocktail” you can order to sip on while we wait for everyone to join the Zoom room.

Taverna Opa and Tapa Toro Re-Open for Take Out and Delivery Service under One Roof at ICON Park

Last month, Katerina and Vassilis Combaros made the tough decision to close their restaurants’ doors. As you can imagine, I-Drive’s traffic had significantly decreased, making it nearly impossible for them to remain open.

After significant restructuring, Taverna Opa and Tapa Toro are cooking again starting today under one roof!

Katerina Coumbaros, Co-owner of Tapa Toro/ Taverna Opa Orlando tells us, “As small business owners, it’s not just about the success of the restaurants. We consider it our personal responsibility to provide stable income for our 100 team members. Unfortunately, we had to furlough 95% of them and recommended that they go on unemployment. The unsettling fact is none of them have received it, and it has been a month.

Delays with funding make it almost impossible for us to not reopen. So we are reopening with limited hours, a leaner staff, and a new way of serving the community, which includes running both restaurants from one kitchen. We look forward to partnering with other organizations to support our fellow hospitality workers in need.”

#OrlandoToGo: Take Out Inside Look: The Capital Grille at Mall at Millenia

The restaurant scene is drastically different than it was just two months ago here in Central Florida. Under the current stay-at-home and social distancing orders by the state and county, restaurant dining rooms have closed with many restaurants either going to take out or delivery model or just straight up closing altogether. This includes fine dining establishments such as The Capital Grille which recently debuted a new take out menu for carry out and curbside service.

It was with great pleasure to see Chef Jason O’Neill at The Capital Grille at the Mall at Millenia recently when we visited to try out their take away service. Amidst a barren Mall at Millenia parking lot landscape, Chef Jason was hopeful that this pandemic would end soon so that people can once again enjoy dining out once the virus is contained.

Curbside takeout occurs 12 – 8 PM daily with The Capital Grille takeout menu featuring many of their most popular offerings as well as family style dinners ready to serve at home. They are also making available a Butcher Shoppe selection of uncooked steaks, hand-carved by their in-house butcher and packaged with house-made seasoning and steak butter for you to prepare as you like – call to place your order to go at (407) 351-2210.

Some of my favorites on the menu are there including the lobster mac and cheese, Chilean sea bass with miso butter, prime aged steaks, tenderloin sliders, cheeseburgers, and fried chicken sandwiches that is battered in a delicate batter similar to that of fried cod.

I first met Chef Jason O’Neill over 8 years ago in 2012 when he served as Sous Chef under Chef Matthew Price at the International Drive location for The Capital Grille. Today, Chef Jason is the Executive Chef and Partner at the Mall at Millenia. We got to interview Chef Jason a little while back and now have a chance to share it again during these difficult times…

Interview with Executive Chef Jason O’Neill of The Capital Grille, Mall at Millenia

Tasty Chomps: How did you get your start in the culinary world?

Chef Jason O’Neill: Growing up in a large Italian family, my Mother and Grandmother were both a large influence in my culinary interest. My first job was at a small catering hall in Bristol, CT, as a dishwasher. While observing the line cooks, their creativity and passion inspired me to follow my culinary passion.

How did you start with The Capital Grille?

In 2007, I began my career with The Capital Grille as a sauté cook at our International Drive location. I have now been with The Capital Grille for 9 ½ years and currently hold the position of Executive Chef at the Mall at Millenia location.

What are some of your favorite changes to The Capital Grille in recent years?

There is a modern twist on new Capital Grille locations being built, which is a refreshing take on the classic concept. The diversity of the new menus is also refreshing.

How does the Millenia mall location compare or contrast with the International Drive location?

The Mall at Millenia location tends to draw in local clientele, whereas the International Drive location is directly next to the convention center.

What is your favorite comfort food at The Capital Grille and at home?

At The Capital Grille, I love our Lobster Mac ‘n’ Cheese and Mini Tenderloin Sandwiches. At Home, my mother’s macaroni pie, a spaghetti pie with pepperoni and cream cheese and crock pot stuffed bell peppers (ground beef, bell peppers in a tomato sauce).

What are some of your favorite things to do when not at The Capital Grille?

I am an avid golfer, I enjoy saltwater fishing and spending time with my wife, Julie, and my two young children, Jamison and Jillian.

Here are some highlights from The Capital Grille’s Take Out Menu:

The Capital Grille Cheeseburger with Fries

First Watch Temporarily Closes All Company-Owned Restaurants Starting 4/13/2020 Due to COVID-19 Pandemic

For the health and safety of First Watch’s restaurant operators, they have made the decision to temporarily close the doors to all of company-owned First Watch restaurants, beginning Monday, April 13. This will help to greatly reduce their risk of exposure to this virus and will allow them to focus on their families as well as their mental and physical health.

Letter from First Watch’s CEO Chris Tomasso: https://www.firstwatch.com/a-message-from-our-ceo/

From the bottom of my heart, thank you. You have come out in droves to support your local First Watch and every dedicated manager who’s been working long hours to ensure we were putting food on your table, and theirs. Throughout these past few weeks of trials and tragedy, through sleepless nights worrying about our people and their families, through daily calls with our leadership team to discuss countless scenarios and make nearly impossible decisions, I’ve seen the best in people.

I’m grateful. Grateful for each one of our people who wears the First Watch brand logo proudly on a polo, chef coat, hat or jacket. Grateful for every person who’s called, ordered brunch on our website or through one of our delivery partners, showed love and support for our incredible teams on social media, purchased a cookbook or a gift card… Grateful for our Home Office team who’s worked tirelessly to support our restaurants and the people within them.

For 37 years, First Watch has operated around one core principle: You First. It’s a simple concept that speaks volumes to us – Our people are our most important asset, and their physical safety and health, as well as their mental wellbeing, are always our priority. I carry that responsibility, and it is not something I take lightly.

Therefore, we have made the difficult decision to temporarily close 100% of our company-owned restaurants beginning Monday, April 13, 2020.

Our priority while our doors are closed will remain the protection of our people. We are committed to continuing our restaurant managers’ existing healthcare benefits, and First Watch will cover 100% of out-of-pocket costs, co-pays and deductibles for any medical visits related to Covid-19. We’ve also invested in telemedicine benefits for every First Watch employee and their family, at no cost to them, so all have access to medical professionals who can diagnose, authorize testing and even prescribe medications. Finally, we have committed to making our restaurant managers financially whole by providing a bonus upon their return to work to close the gap between the federal and state benefits they received and their First Watch salary. These benefits are being funded in part by significant cost reductions and senior leadership pay cuts through 2020, to ensure the security and longevity of our restaurant teams.

When we emerge from this event, we will do so stronger, and we cannot wait to bring our entire First Watch family back together to serve you when we open our doors once again.

I wish you and your loved ones the utmost health and safety during these times.

We’ll see you soon.

Chris Tomasso

Dalgona Whipped Coffee Recipe – Popular Viral Food Trend during Coronavirus Lockdown

0

With the current coronavirus pandemic and subsequent quarantine / lockdown situation, people may be finding a lot of time on their hands right now. Why not whisk up some of the latest viral food trend – the Dalgona Whipped Coffee, made popular on social media by South Korean vloggers and the video app Tik Tok.

Dalgona is the name for a Korean toffee candy, brown-sugar-colored and cloud-like and the drink itself is similar to Indian beaten coffee or Greek frappe coffee. This is a super simple recipe that calls for just three ingredients – equal parts instant coffee, sugar, and hot water – whisked – over hot or cold milk. That’s it. Super easy.

Use a hand mixer to speed up the process, or a hand whisk if you have 20 minutes and want to develop powerful arms.

Ingredients
2 tablespoons instant coffee
2 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons hot water
1 cup milk – substitute with oat or other plant-based milk to make this recipe vegan friendly
Optional – dash of cinnamon, cocoa powder, or honey as toppings

Utensils
Hand mixer or hand whisk

Instructions
1. Add the instant coffee, sugar, and hot water in a mixing bowl
2. Whip the mixture until creamy and thick (ranges from 2 minutes by hand mixer to 20 minutes if by hand whisk)
3. Add dollops of the whipped Dalgona coffee on top of a glass of your desired milk
4. Sprinkle with cinnamon, cocoa powder, or honey as toppings if desired
5. Snap a photo to share on social media with hashtag #dalgonacoffeechallenge
6. Stir and enjoy

#OrlandoToGo – Inside Look of Butter Bliss Bakeshop Including Secret Menu Items

Butter Bliss Bakeshop is owned and operated by Baker Lisa Vasquez in our local city we love so much. We were honored to try a few of her favorites, popular items mentioned by her customers as well as secret menu items while we’re in lockdown.

The Classic Brownie is a soft and cloud-like brownie made with melted chocolate for a real classic taste. If you add a drizzle of warm caramel on top and have it with a glass of warm milk, you’d be golden.

The Bacon Cheddar Chive Scone is a savory exclusive item that you cannot find on the menu. It is made with real bacon, chopped fresh chives, and shredded mild cheddar cheese. I hear it is everything you could want in a savory breakfast scone. Lisa suggests to warm in an oven for a few minutes for the maximum level of enjoyment when taking bites into the scone.

Another secret menu item is the Espresso Chocolate Chip Scone. Some new items may include one of the secret menu items whether it be scones or a savory item. This sweet espresso chocolate chip scone is made with freshly brewed Cafe Bustelo espresso, semi-sweet chocolate chips, and drizzled in a Maple Butter glaze. It is a perfect item to kick start your day with the amazing espresso brew and sweetness of the chocolate and maple butter glaze. However, with this pandemic messing up my sleep schedule, I can eat this caffeinated item all day.

A popular item of our community is the Chocolate Chip Cookie. It is a brown sugar cookie with golden crispiness on the outside.

The Blueberry Lime Ricotta Mini Loaf is a very moist cake, with lime zest, lime juice and fresh blueberries mixed in the batter. It is covered in a lime glaze and can be enjoyed warm or cold, dessert or breakfast. What makes this mini loaf so moist? It’s the ricotta Lisa adds to the recipe to make it what it is. This item was my mom’s favorite. She loves how it is more tart than sweet.

For more information, please visit Butter Bliss Bakeshop to order yourself a box as well as plan for your visit once this lockdown is over. Also, keep an eye out for one of our Tasty Chomps posts with a private interview with Owner/Baker Lisa Vasquez.

Extra Crispy KFC Chicken – Pickled Radishes, Benne Seeds, Sweet And Spicy Sauce. The glazed crispy skin will give you something to drool over.

Shrimp And Anson Mills Grits – Fried Okra, Fermented Peppers, Bacon-Tomato Emulsion.  I have had this dish before and it is still the best shrimp and grits that I have ever had.  It is innovative and it had a nice kick to it which I enjoyed.

Pecan Crusted Florida Snapper – Jupiter Rice, Shrimp Hush Puppies, Lemon Butter Sauce.  A delicious, tender seafood dish.

Buttermilk Biscuits – Served With House-Made Butter And Preserves.  They were delightful and I enjoyed how the soft buttery crumbles just melted in my mouth with every bite.  Highly recommended!

Quinoa, Bacon, Avocado And Watercress Salad – Toasted Sunflower Seeds, Coriander-Chili Emulsion.  This was one of the best salads that I have ever had and it will never be forgotten.  It was surprising, wholesome, refreshing and well blended.

Cornmeal Fried Okra – Served With Buttermilk Ranch Dipping Sauce.  It was crunchy on the outside and creamy on the inside which made it uniquely satisfying.

Overall, it was a great Southern comfort meal that had the right amount of variety.

Crave Bakehouse Brings Donuts into Your Keto, Paleo, & Gluten Free Lifestyles

Crave Bakehouse has a simple philosophy of “Quiet your cravings. Feed your wellness.” They strive to satisfy every human’s desire for ‘sweet and bready’ minus the high glycemic flours and sugar. Not feeling deprived keeps you committed to a life of good health. We can get on board with that, especially during times of quarantine creating such anxiety in most of us!

The Crave Bakehouse family is passionate about creating authenticity in flavor and texture to truly satisfied you with each bite instead of searching for the next treat. All of their products are prepared with the best intentions and ingredients that let you indulge without slowing you down. The donuts are made with organic coconut flour, organic coconut oil, eggs, and a high grade stevia/erythritol blend for sweetening.

The first item I tried was their Cinnamon Sugar and it reminds me of a healthy version of a cinnamon Auntie Anne’s pretzel when I was younger. My mom always ordered the cinnamon sugar pretzels. With that being said, it was definitely my mom’s favorite donut when she tried these. I’m surprised she only ate half the first sitting, but that’s because she’s saving the other half for the next morning to eat with her coffee.

Their Lemon Poppy Crumble is quite refreshing with each bite. It has 3 net carbs, yet no added sugars. This is so refreshing and quenched my cravings for a zesty lemonade.

This Double Chocolate Chip is thus far my favorite! I popped this bad boy into the microwave and heated it up for 10 seconds for a warm, chocolatey hug. I wish I had an unlimited supply of this donut popping out of the oven like cookies popped out of Santa’s sled in the Santa Clause 2 movie. And with a mug of hot chocolate or milk in general.

Let me introduce you to the Maca Pecan. For this donut, they use Maca powder to add delectable flavors to the donut and has many health benefits, which you can google for more information. It creates a sweet and nutty taste with notes of butterscotch. I wish I could’ve tried it, but my dad inhaled this faster than I could say Maca Pecan.

The Piña Colada is unique in every way from scent to taste. I’d recommend having one with a piña colada drink. With the quarantine, what’s stopping you from having it and the drink any time of the day or any day of the week?

This is the Limade with a green stripe made by spinach powder. This is another zesty donut on their menu. This instance, it’s like having a margarita in donut form… Without the salt and tequila. I guess that’s still ok because the donut is still delicious without any tequila.

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Stefano’s Trattoria – Oviedo

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers.  The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.

Therefore the popular Italian restaurant in Oviedo/Winter Springs, Stefano’s Trattoria, is now offering takeout while complying to social distancing guidelines.

With the full menu available, there a few different options for ordering.  Guest can place an order directly from the restaurant’s website, by calling the store at (407) 659-0101, or by walking into the restaurant and placing their order with a staff member.

Once the order has been placed, guest can pick up their delicious food directly in store or have it brought out to their car for a quick and easy contactless pick-up.

Delivery is available as well.

We had the opportunity to experience this new curbside service and we were highly impressed with convenience of it as well as the taste and quality of our takeout order.  The passionate team at Stefano’s Trattoria is dedicated to serving homestyle comfort Italian food using only the best ingredients and it is pretty evident once you have tasted their excellent food.

Calamari Fritti

Flour battered deep fried seasoned squid garnished with lemon and parsley and served with marinara dipping sauce.  It was fresh and perfectly crisp.

Tortellini Alla Panna

Tortellini pasta sautéed in homemade cream sauce with prosciutto.

Wow, what an amazing dish.  If I had to recommend only one item out of their whole menu, it would be this one.  Order the Tortellini Alla Panna and thank me later.

Tortellini Di Stefano
This dish is very similar to dish above.  They use tortellini pasta with a touch of prosciutto but cook then it in a creamy meat sauce, baked and topped with provolone cheese.

Overall, I highly recommend Stefano’s Trattoria.  Add them to your takeout rotation and enjoy delicious Italian food from the comfort of your own home today.

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Delaney’s Tavern – SoDo District

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers.  The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.  Patrons can order alcoholic beverages to go with food either through pick-up or delivery with valid identification.

Delaney’s Tavern current special: $4 import, $3 domestic, $22 six-pack import.

Delaney’s Tavern at The Delaney Hotel, located directly across from Orlando Health, is open for business and has implemented a new contactless takeout system.

Guest can walk through the automatic sliding doors at The Delaney Hotel which will then lead them to the restaurant’s side door (pictured above) where they can pick up their order at the bar or they can simply call the restaurant when they have arrived at the parking lot and have their order brought out to them curbside.

Delaney’s Tavern is currently offering a special takeout menu that includes some of their Tavern favorites as well as daily Family Meals specials available at 4pm everyday.  All family meals feed four people and feature a house salad and Parker House rolls for $45.

Executive Chef Anthony Albino and his team have been working together for the past 10-12 years and they certainly know what they are doing.

I recently had the opportunity to try their Tavern Burger with a side of crispy potato wedges and it was one of the best burgers and best crispy potato wedges that I have ever had in my life.

The Tavern Burger consists of brisket, chuck, short rib blended patty, smoked gouda cheese, caramelized onion aioli, crispy onion frizzle, and chipotle bbq in between a toasted brioche bun.

The finished product.

For a limited time only, guest can order a Tavern Burger ($13) and receive a free beer.  Choices are: Budweiser, Michelob Ultra, or Bud Light.

I would 100% recommend this burger.

I took my burger togo and enjoyed it in my scenic backyard.

I hope to return soon after the quarantine is over for a staycation at The Delaney Hotel and dinner *inside* Delaney’s Tavern.  Until then, takeout will do.

Edible Orlando and Walt Disney World Host Seventh Annual Field to Feast Dinner 2020

Edible Orlando and Walt Disney World team up to host an outdoor feast featuring locally sourced dishes at Long & Scott Farms benefitting Second Harvest Food Bank.

It couldn’t have been a more beautiful day to enjoy the Florida outdoors with alfresco dining on a farm in Zellwood, Florida. The 7th annual Field to Feast dinner was situated beautifully in Long & Scott Farms under an open pavilion with outdoor string lights hanging from the ceiling. This year, the dinner raised funds for the Kids Cafe Program and all proceeds benefitted Second Harvest Food Bank of Central Florida.

Food stations surrounded the main dining area showcasing a variety of talent and creativity from Walt Disney World’s top chefs. Each food station was paired with a wine, beer or cocktail selection served by a master sommelier. One of my favorite stations was from Epcot Festival’s catering team with the prime steak tartare served in a hollow bone marrow and sprinkled with edible flowers.

We ended our dinner with a hayride tour of the farm on the Sweet Corn Express, which was a large covered wagon pulled by a tractor. It was a fun and tasty experience and I can’t wait to see what Edible Orlando has planned for next year’s event!

Eating My Way Through a Masquerade at The Edison at Disney Springs

Walking into The Edison, I entered a fantasy world of electrifying mystique and intrigue during The Edison’s inaugural Masquerade on February 22. From the moment I crossed the threshold, I was happily surprised walking around every corner with all the decor and effort put into the night.

Appetizers were coming around on trays to enjoy while drinks were being poured all night.

Blackened shrimp cocktail with cocktail and remoulade sauces.

BBQ short rib with kimchee.

Oyster shooters with mignonette. You can taste the ocean with every bite.

Cucumber canapés with salmon mousse. This was my favorite food item of the night! Very light and refreshing, yet packed with creamy protein.

Buffalo meatballs. These were very tasty even though they’re not very pretty.

Portobello fries with siracha. These were very unique, moist on the inside and crispy on the outside. The siracha added a nice spice to each bite, but doesn’t overpower the earthy taste of the portobello.

After the savory bites, the sweet ones came rolling out. These cake pops were the bomb and the pistachio white chocolate pops were amazing even though I’m not a fan of white chocolate.

For something more tart, here are some lemon tarts with a fresh raspberry on top to quench your thirst.

Eyeing down the food will make you super thirsty and want a cocktail from their special menu for the night.

The Butterfly Effect was my favorite. It consisted of Grey Goose vodka, St. Germain elderflower, lime juice, simple syrup, and pea flower infusion. Smooth and simple with a splash of color.

The Masked Mule is a bolder choice with Maker’s Mark bourbon, lime juice, honey, blackberries, and ginger beer. Still a delight, but strong as ever.

Sip In Moderation is made with Plymouth gin, simple syrup, hibiscus cordial, pineapple juice, lemon juice, and chambord. A little dryer, but still refreshing.

Don’t be fooled that the five cocktails are the only drinks offered because the bartenders can make anything else you’d like to order. Also, fairies were flying around offering a variety of shots for $10 each.

Check out The Edison on the daily as well as for their special events.

Inside Look: Galeria Restaurant in Baldwin Park

Galeria was founded from a group of international service and hospitality entrepreneurs whose background in classical performing arts and culinary arts were inspired to offer great food and great art, giving artists a place to showcase their work.

Spinalis Sliders – Espresso rubbed spinalis, caramelized onions, Hawaiian slider bun, arugula, and wasabi cucumber sriracha aioli. These buns add a light sweetness to a flavorful spinalis.

The Bacon Flight includes thick cut Compart Duroc bacon, jerked, agave sriracha glazed, dazed and glazed maple chipotle, served with bacon jam. This was one of my favorite dishes at dinner. Why? Because bacon is the best thing ever. I most likely had two plates of this dish on my own and I don’t regret a single bite.

The Van Gough is their $65.99 Tomahawk Steak, which is to die for. I can’t wait to come back for more!

Look how beautiful Chef Matt made this Tomahawk steak. It is just as tender and moist as you see it in this photograph. I also wish I brought home the bone for the pup.

The Claude Monet is Galeria’s blend of fresh salad mix, candied walnuts, applewood smoked blu cheese, sliced strawberries, and Guava balsamic dressing. The guava balsamic dressing is definitely unique for this dish; however, it draws all of the flavors together.

The Day Boat is seasonal fish, tomato watermelon kimchi, roasted fingerling potatoes, and roasted vegetables. It was as light as it sounds, but still SO flavorful.

As for dessert, it all depends on the day and what the chef has in mind for you. Chef Joshua will create beautiful and delicious treats after you’ve enjoyed a beautiful meal by Chef Matt.

Grab the menu, a glass of wine or cocktail and laugh the evening away with friends and family while your eyes feast on the local artwork on display throughout the restaurant.

For more information, visit Galeria yourself.

Great Harvest Bread Company Feeds You & Our Community During Crisis

Brad and Rachel Cottle are a husband and wife team focused on finding healthy options to delicious foods. They only opened their location 4 months ago in the downtown Orlando area and they’re already supporting our Orlando community by donating loaves of bread to local food banks and coalitions. Right now, they’re donating a loaf for every 2 loaves you buy.

Great Harvest is a slice of their life that they wanted to share with the Orlando community they have grown to love. Great Harvest is a “freedom franchise.” It is locally owned and operated, with Brad milling the wheat and mixing the ingredients every morning to make fresh breads and goodies, but they also get the support of a like-minded community of other franchisees sharing ideas and recipes.

The bread they bake is fresh and they only use honey to sweeten their bread.

Not only do they have fresh bread for you, they also make dishes and desserts for you to enjoy on location or on the go (more so of the latter now because gathering is illegal at the moment). One of their popular sandwiches is their Breakfast Sandwich, which can be customized by your preference in meat, bread, cheese, etc. They’ll all have an egg in the middle, which is nicely sliced and displayed. It’s not only photogenic, but it’s also delicious with a blend of flavors.

Aside from bread and sandwiches, they also have items in the store to buy. This includes fresh and organic items like preservatives, peanut butter and honey.

There are seasonings for soups and other dishes you’d like to make at home.

Not to mention all the freshly in-house baked dog treats they sell and offer your 4 legged friends.

For more information, check out Great Harvest yourself. I know I’ll be back!

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Saffron Indian Cuisine – Restaurant Row

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers.  The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.

Saffron is an Indian restaurant located on Sand Lake Road’s “Restaurant Row” owned by restaurateur Sunny Corda.  Sunny has implemented a new contactless pick-up system at Saffron where guest can walk through a partially open door and pick up their order from an assigned table or they can call the restaurant when they have arrived at the parking lot and have their order brought to them in their car.  Free delivery is also available as well.

I had the opportunity to try a few takeout dishes and they were all so good!  The whole time I was eating my food at home I kept thinking to myself, “Indian food is such a blessing.”  It really spoke to my soul!

Naan – a light & fluffy bread.
Chicken Tikka Masala – Chicken tikka, cashew paste, house special tomato gravy. It was seriously delicious.

Kesari Nazarana Vegetable Dinner

Assorted platter with samosa, vegetable cutlet, onion bhajiya and hara bhara kabab in a bed of shredded iceberg lettuce.  This dish made me happy every time I took a bite of it.

Tandoori Chicken

Marinated chicken, spices, herbs in a bed of onions and green peppers.  The marination, spices, and herbs of the chicken was perfection.  Highly recommended!

Takeout menu below:

Overall, the food was quite enjoyable and I will say that Saffron has become my new favorite Indian restaurant in town.  I hope to return soon after the quarantine is over to try some of their other dishes *inside* the restaurant next time.

  • 2 tbsp crème fraiche
  • 1 tsp yuzu juice (or lemon juice substitute)

  • Salt

Method:

  1. Heat up a sauté pan on high heat. Add oil to the pan. Season fish with S&P. Once pan starts smoking, add salmon to the pan and sear each side of the fish till golden brown. You would want to do a quick sear on each side, about 20-30 seconds on each side. Set salmon aside to cool.

  3. Make crème fraiche sauce. Mix all three ingredients together and mix well and set aside.
  4. Take all the berries, clean and prep and set aside.
  5. Plate up: cut salmon on a bias into 1inch strips. Spoon onto a plate the crème fraiche yuzu sauce generously, lay salmon on top of the sauce and garnish with berries and top with kale for texture. Finish plate with a touch of maldon.

#OrlandoToGo: Takeout Inside Look: Christini’s Ristorante Italiano – Dr. Phillips

Governor Ron DeSantis issued Executive Order 20-71, directing all restaurants and food establishments within the State of Florida to suspend on-premises food and alcohol consumption for customers. The establishments may, however, operate their kitchens for the purpose of providing delivery or takeout services.

Therefore the beloved Christini’s Ristorante Italiano in Dr. Phillips is now offering curbside pick-up and delivery from 12pm to 9pm daily.  Guest can call the restaurant at (407) 345-8770 to place an order and then have their meal brought out to their car for a quick and easy contactless pick-up.

We had the opportunity to experience this new curbside service and we were highly impressed with convenience of it as well as the taste and quality of our food.  The culinary team at Christini’s Ristorante Italiano has put together an outstanding menu of original recipes blending the flavors of selective regions from Italy.

Ciabatta Bread – served with roasted eggplant dip and shaved Parmesan that comes with every order.  Made fresh in house.

Fusilli Boscaiola – Spiral pasta with shitake mushrooms in a light tomato, dry sherry and brandy cream sauce.  Addictive and delicious.

Filetto al Barolo – Prime filet mignon in a Barolo wine sauce with shitake mushrooms, pearl onions.  This dish will surely fulfill your steak cravings.

Ricotta Cheesecake – strawberry sauce, strawberry, raspberries, chocolate sticks, mint, topped with an edible flower.  A rich and decadent dessert.

All wine bottles are discounted at 50% off and can be ordered for take-out as well.

Christini’s Ristorante Italiano has been around for 35 years, as far back as when a majority of the Dr. Phillips area was just a lonely pasture farm.  We should continue to support this locally owned and family operated restaurant as much as possible during these unpredictable times.

Cafe Linger

Good morning, Orlando!

In the midst of the global pandemic, maintaining normality has become very difficult for everyone, including small businesses. We will continue to serve our community the best we can by offering pickup and delivery from 8am-3pm Tuesday-Sunday.

Cafe Linger is on UberEats, but during this time, we ask that you call us and we will deliver directly to you. It lowers the amount of people handing off your order, making it safer for you, your loved ones, and for our team. We would also like to inform you that Uber takes a 1/3 cut of everything ordered through them, so asking for delivery directly through us would ensure that all orders go back into our small business. We will continue to be available through the app, as we do understand some prefer Uber, however please keep this in mind during the stay home order.

Remember to support your favorite local places during this crisis whenever you can. We cannot express our gratitude for the love and support we have received in all directions and because of you, we get to continue to do what we love most—serving our beautiful city.
